Rune Thief: An Urban Fantasy Novel (Isabella Hush Series Book 1) Page 22

But I knew that nothing would be regular ever again.

I plucked my cat from the floor next to her bowl and fell down onto my sofa, smoothing down her fur till she purred. It was a good sound. A sound that made me feel like anything was possible.

I felt safe for the first time in years. I felt hope.

Maybe a good guy would've pretended those runes meant nothing and spared those people in the room. Maybe a good guy would have saved them from themselves and told them they were fake. Two of them were fake anyway. Two authentic: one to bait Finn and let him believe I had somehow kept my bargain. One for my fist. With enough value to buy me a whole new life.

Maybe a good guy would have found a way to spirit the real ones away to safety where they couldn't do any real harm.

But like Maddox had said: there are no good guys. Not even me.

And I could live with that.

  Author Notes

WHEN I STARTED THIS journey, I was on my way back to school for the academic year. Our organization sent us on a summit to pump us up for teaching the learners that would be coming our way.

While we were on that long bus ride, heading to the city 3 hours away that somehow turned into 7.5, I pulled out my notebook to jot down a few thoughts for the characters.

One of my peers who was sitting across from me (a woman who keeps her cool in the heat of the daily 'battle' of teaching and learning) asked if I was writing. When I said yes, she said, "Can you put me in your book?"

I told her only if I could do whatever I wanted with the character. She didn't hesitate. Unflappable as always. Grin.

Well, Kelly Setlakwe, you're in here, and likely to be in several books to come. I hope you like Kelliope.

As for you, dear reader, if you got this far, I'm hoping you enjoyed slipping into Isabella's skin. She has so many more adventures waiting to sweep you away. If it did provide a few hours of entertainment, it would be lovely of you to Leave a review to let me know what you thought.
