The Icing on the Cake Page 26

Before the vows were exchanged, he looked out at the crowd, saw Cassie, and winked.

Just a wink, so quick she might have missed it.

It said everything. That wink encompassed all of his plans for both of them, for their future, their lives stretching out into eternity together.

When he’d asked what she would say if he proposed—back when they’d looked at their house for the first time—she’d said she didn’t know.

But she knew now. She wanted this—wanted all of it. She wanted him, now and forever.

At the reception in the lodge’s ballroom, there were toasts and speeches, the bride and groom’s first dance, the drinking of champagne, the cutting of the cake.

All of them rode a gentle wave of happiness and goodwill.

Brian took Cassie’s champagne flute out of her hand, put it on a table, and drew her onto the dance floor as the swell of music began.

“Ike and Benny look really happy,” Cassie said as Brian pulled her into his arms and they both began to sway.

“They are,” he agreed. “They really are.”

“They’re a great couple,” she said. “I think they’re going to last.”

“We are, too.” He said it matter-of-factly, as though it were a simple truth.

They danced together amid the scent of roses and the music of a string quartet. Cassie felt like she was floating, like she never wanted to stop.

“You know when we looked at the house, and I said there was a thing I didn’t know?”

  “Yeah.”

“Well, now I know. It’s yes. If you asked, it would be yes.”

“Really?” His face lit up, and he spun her around so fast she felt dizzy.

She laughed. “Yes, really. I want it all. I want you, and I want to be Thor’s mom.”

“Speaking of being someone’s mom, we do have those two spare bedrooms.…”

“Let’s not get ahead of ourselves.”

And that was okay. There was no need to rush. She wanted it all, and so did he.

There was plenty of time to enjoy getting there together.
