Fading Hope Page 4

“I would say the same for me,” I said with a giggle. I beckoned him to come and cuddle with me, and he did so immediately.

He felt like the last puzzle piece of my life to snap in. Though one other one—my parents—was coming a little loose, that would get resolved later. For now, I was just happy to have the first crush I’d ever had here in my bed, me resting in his arms.

“You know what’s nice?” he said.

  “Hmm.”

“Not having to worry about club business.”

  “I’ll bet.”

I think he wanted to say something else, but he just went silent. I think he and I had the same idea in mind—the silence was what made the moment special, not either of us saying something profound.

Which, of course, meant that his phone going off in the living room interrupted us.

“Jesus,” he mumbled. “Let me go turn my phone off so we can be here without interruption.”

  “No worries,” I said.

I sat back and stared at the ceiling, unable to shake the shit-eating grin on my face as the dopamine surged through my body. What a moment. What a delight. I’m so glad I waited. I’m so glad I didn’t act crazy because of last night or my parents—

  “Parker?”

Wait, I thought Landon said he was just going to shut off his phone? I sat up, nervousness creeping back in.

“What do you mean, he’s hurt?”

  Oh, no…

A sinking feeling hit me as I began to suspect something terrible.

Maybe Landon King had lied to me about leaving the Savage Kings.
