Lauren’s cheek lovingly rubs against my shoulder. “If that’s the case, then I welcome the challenge, because even though we can’t stand the doll, she does add an element of fun to the house.”
Keeping quiet for a second, thinking over everything about our life and the family we’ve created—Martha included—I say, “Do you know what I truly love about you, Lauren?”
“What?” I can feel her smile against my skin.
“That you don’t look at a challenge as a hindrance, but rather than a chance to find joy in something new.”
“Why sweat the small things, when you can learn from them and try to make them enjoyable?”
It’s been her attitude ever since I met her. Given my slight pessimistic attitude, with her yin to my yang it’s the perfect balance.
Lifting her chin, I press her lips against mine and say, “Thank you for the perfect date night. You amaze me.”
She kisses me back. “Thank you for dealing with my brand of crazy.”
“I can’t live without your brand of crazy.” Thank fuck she can deal with mine.
“Love you, beautiful wife.”
“Love you too, studly husband.”
I know. We’re sickening, right?”
“Be an accountant,” my dad said. So I did. But that wasn’t all he said. He also said something that has stayed with me for years, and I thank God daily that I listened.
“Find the girl who gives you shit,” my dad said. “But only one who looks you in the eye and tells you she loves you as she does. Because that’s when you’ll know without a shadow of doubt that you’ve found your forever.” So I did.
