The phone rang, pulling her from her thoughts.
“It’s been ringing off the hook since before I got here,” Ms. O’Donnell said with a wave of her hand as Courtney reached for the receiver. “I’m not sure we’ll ever get caught up again! I’m so excited!”
Courtney answered the phone.
“Just the person I was hoping to talk to,” said a familiar voice from the other end. “This is Shawn Ryder. I wanted to talk to you about Gunnar.”
Her blood froze in her veins. She hadn’t heard a word from the dog trainer since he’d left with Gunnar, but she’d made him promise to contact her if he wasn’t working out for any reason. “Yes?” she asked nervously.
“I just thought you’d like to know he’s doing wonderfully. He’s a great dog. It took him a day or two to get adjusted to being in a new place, which is normal, of course. I’ve taken him out to see what he’s capable of, and he has some excellent training behind him. I do think it’s been affected a bit by the tragedy he went through with his former handler. The good news is that even if he never returns to police work officially, he’ll be great for the program.”
She melted into her chair, her fears alleviated. “So, he’s got his forever home?”
Shawn laughed. “Absolutely. If I’m totally honest, he’s made me break my own rules. Dogs that are in the program can’t really be treated as pets, because that can stop them from really doing their job. Gunnar is different, and he’s been sleeping at the foot of my bed every night.”
It was the best news Courtney could have heard. Gunnar was getting exactly what he needed. He not only had a purpose in life, but also a home. “Thank you so much. And let Gunnar know that any time he needs a holiday, he’s always welcome at the Curly Bay Pet Hotel and Rescue.”
