BLINDED (Elkridge Series Book 1) Page 29

Well that’s a new one. When was the last time a guy had referred to Kym Zhang as a lady?

Zach was a stranger, true, but Hank let him take his truck, which was a far stronger recommendation than many guys Kym knew could have commanded. Zach had also stopped to help without her having to flag him down, and he’d refused her money.

“I’ll need to be home by midnight,” Kym said, summoning her newly formed date-list conditions. “You’ll stay sober enough to drive, you’ll buy my ticket but not my food or drink, and you’ll keep your hands to yourself.”

The last demand was silly. Her flirtation detector needle had moved not at all in this encounter, but the rules were the rules.

“Yes, ma’am. Midnight it is.” Zach passed her the coiled up cables. “If Hank can give me directions, I’ll pick you up at six. Wear jeans, because when the sun goes down, it gets chilly.”

“—it gets chilly,” she said in unison with him.

He put her hood down with a good solid thump. “See you on Saturday, and get your battery fixed.”

  “Saturday.”

Kym watched him saunter around the vehicle—no harm in looking, was there?—before she got into the Honda and took a long draw from her water bottle.

She was going on a date, more or less, and with a guy who’d made not one attempt to check her out, flirt with her, or start that back and forth volley most guys like to play.

Zach was different, and that might be a good thing.

Or it might just be awkward as hell.

  for BLINDED

A book is hardly ever written by a single person. To make the story as strong and rewarding as possible, it’s written by a tribe of special people.

My sincere appreciation goes to Jeannine for helping me see that Mara’s and Joey’s story needed to be told. To Margie Lawson, the book whisperer. To Amy, Rachelle, Mineela, Sue, and Lori, my gracious beta readers, who were brave enough to provide constructive suggestions for improvement. Faith Freewoman and Zoe Dawson, my amazing editors, who pushed me to put the emotion on the page and worked tirelessly to make the best book possible. For Shelby Reed and Carol Agnew, who crossed every T and dotted every I. To Rogenna Brewer, who created a great cover for my story. To VFRW, Lalala’s and the GIAMers for pushing me every step of the way. You have my sincere appreciation.

And, to Special Agent Michael Bantner who answered my endless stream of questions about FBI, DEA, and local procedures. I’m honored you gave me permission to use your name in my books, and hopefully I created a good-looking character just as you requested. For the readers, know this character is completely fictional and in no way can measure up to the real Special Agent Bantner.

Last but not least, to my husband Mike for accompanying me to Ft. Logan National Cemetery and encouraging me to write when there were so many perceived obstacles in my way.

You all have my sincere gratitude.
