Acknowledgments
Without the support of my friends and family, this writing life of mine simply would not be possible.
I owe a big debt of gratitude to Richard Bilodeau, James Hayman and Jane Sloven, my writing group when I first conceived the characters and plot of Cover Story. They knew this book when it had a different working title and Joe Gale had a different name, and I thank them for their thoughtful criticism and encouragement.
This manuscript went through a lot of iterations along the way. I’m grateful to the early readers who helped shape it, including Janice Asher, Ann Bingham, David Currier, Nicole d’Entremont, Barbara Gauditz, Chris Kenty, Phyllis Knight, Yolande Landry, Jean Lavigne, Marty Layne, Kathy Metzger, Betsy Miller, Pat Peard, Mary Toole and Carol Warren.
My friend and colleague Ron Schneider—the defense lawyer I’d hire if I ever found myself on the wrong side of the law—provided valuable help with the courtroom scenes. When I took a few too many liberties with court procedure, retired Maine District Court judge David Kennedy ordered me to revise. He was right (of course) and I thank him for his stern but enthusiastic ruling from the bench.
In addition to serving as early readers, my law partners David Currier and Carol Warren have been stalwart supporters, as have my colleagues Andrea Cesario, Kristine Hedtler and Susan Starr.
I thank Maureen Milliken for once again bringing her newspaper editor’s eye and sensibility to Cover Story, which made it a better book. Deep appreciation to my web guru, Donna Jones, who bails me out of tech trouble with patience I do not deserve. Thank you to my friend and colleague Elise Smith for her guidance, not to mention our wonderful breakfast meetings. I am grateful to Shonna Milliken Humphrey for her willingness to help whenever I ask.
Many thanks to my agent, Marlene Stringer, for loving my characters, believing in me and offering such wise advice.
I am blessed to have a talented, hard-working editor in Deb Nemeth, whose insight and suggestions are always spot-on. Thanks as well to the tip-top team at Carina Press.
My deepest gratitude to my mother and father, for everything.
Last on this list, but first in my heart, is my spouse, Diane Kenty, who rode with me to Machias over snowy back roads several Februarys ago and endured a cold night in a barely heated motel so I could refresh my memories of Downeast Maine in the dead of winter. Thank you, my dear, for your willingness to be my sidekick on adventures large and small.
