“Hope so,” he said through gritted teeth. “I’m just about done in.”
The lane to the farm was covered in several feet of snow, and Anna and Jem kicked a path through it to make walking easier for Callum. Eventually, the avenue of trees opened to reveal a single storey cottage sitting within a clearing. Jem ran ahead, kicking at the snow, and Anna placed an arm beneath Callum’s. Covered in snow, the old stone cottage looked picture perfect beneath the moonlight.
“We’re here,” Jem called as she ran to the door.
“We’re safe!” Anna whispered with a surge of relief.
“For now,” Callum mumbled, his words unheard as Anna ran to the secret hiding place where Jez had placed a key.
EPILOGUE
As Anna unlocked the back door of Jez’s self-sufficient farmhouse, and the IRGC (Islamic Revolutionary Guard) extraction team reported its failure in retrieving the Grimsby sleeper cell, Jamshid arrived at a narrow and cobbled street lined with quaintly old-fashioned shops. Standing outside Jez’s boarded-up adventure shop, he peered upwards. A warm light shone like a beacon of welcome from between the gaps in the curtains. He knocked and waited for the only person in town he trusted to give him shelter; his English teacher, and fellow Iranian, Fauzia Gallagher.
Five minutes later he sat in the cosy living room of Fauzia’s small apartment, a warm cup of sweetened tea in hand.
“Jamshid is one of my students, Jez,” Fauzia explained as her husband sat opposite. “I taught him English at the college a couple of years ago.”
“I was meant to return to Iran yesterday. I was on my way to the airport but this,” he gestured to the window, “prevented me, and now I have nowhere to go. I spent last night on the streets.”
The room became silent and then Jez said, “You can stop here tonight. We don’t have a spare room, but you can sleep on the couch. You’ll be safe with us.”
‘Dark Winter’ is an ongoing story and continues in 'Savage Winter', Book 2 in the 'Dark Winter' series.
