“What’s going on?” Corey leaned in the doorway, curious. “Is it the apocalypse?”

“Audrey got a call this morning from JCPD about assisting on a recovery,” Cin explained as she packed up all her supplies in one of the biohazard bags and ducked into another cabinet for the portable LED lights. Audrey Marsh, the university’s forensic anthropologist, always got called for skeletal remains and the examination took place in her lab on campus.

“So, you thought you’d raid my shit?” Corey asked. “What do you need all that for, anyway? How old are the bones?”

“Not bones,” Cin replied. “A decomp.”

“Yuck.” Corey grimaced. “So, that’s what I have to look forward to tomorrow? Wait, why is Dr. Marsh doing it?”

“The body is severely decomposed and not able to be identified or autopsied, most likely. It’s still unclear how it’s all going to work. Audrey has been talking to Dr. Webster and the police. I think it’s going to be a joint effort.”

Corey perked up at the idea of assisting Audrey Marsh, her old professor and advisor, on a forensic case. “Where’s the body?”

Cin’s phone chimed a text message. “That’s Aud with the location now.” She was halfway through the door when she turned back to Corey. “You’re not coming?”

“Am I invited?” Corey asked, her face brightening.

“Yeah, did you miss the part where I said joint effort?” Cin jerked her head out the door. “Hurry up. Aud is waiting for us and we’re going to need to grab scrubs on the way out. Hey, you got your cast off.”

Corey couldn’t contain her grin as she grabbed her keys and phone from the desk and followed Cin out. “Totally cut it off with the Stryker.”

“What’s Thayer going to say about that?”

  Corey’s smile widened. “Thayer helped.”

Cin laughed at her. “Wow, your face right now…”

  “What?”

“Nothing. You just look really happy.” Cin nodded to her phone. “You need to message and let her know you’re on a field trip?”

“Better not,” she replied. “Pretty sure Thayer won’t thank me for getting her involved in another one of my cases.”
