The Laird's Choice Page 32

by Amanda Scott

By most accounts, Jamie was an English captive for nineteen years, although the dates given by his biographers vary considerably. If he was captured in 1403, the earliest date I’ve seen (and the year in which I set Highland Lover), his release at Easter in 1424 gives him twenty-one years. James himself wrote that they captured him in 1405, which does add up to nineteen years by Easter 1424, the date on which nearly all accounts and the records agree. As I noted in Highland Lover, the entry for James I of Scotland in the English Dictionary of National Biography makes a logical argument for his capture in 1406 but undermines that argument by declaring that the capture could not have come earlier due to a truce then in force between England and Scotland (a truce we know Henry IV of England broke regularly).

This sort of stuff is great fun for any author of historical fiction, because gaps, questionable data, and historical mysteries provide free flow for one’s creative juices and energy for the gray cells to leap hither and yon.

I would like to extend special thanks to Donal MacRae for his help in naming Tùr Meiloach and explaining about its giants, and to Michael MacFarlane, Matthew Miller (California Commissioner for The International Clan MacFarlane Society, Ltd.), and everyone who contributed to www.clanmacfarlane.org for their valuable assistance, helpful commentary, and excellent resources.

As always, I also thank my wonderful agents, Lucy Childs and Aaron Priest, Senior Editor Selina McLemore, Senior Managing Editor Bob Castillo, master copyeditor Sean Devlin, my publicist Jennifer Reese, Art Director Diane Luger, cover artist Larry Rostant, Editorial Director Amy Pierpont, Vice President and Editor in Chief Beth de Guzman, and everyone else at Hachette Book Group’s Grand Central Publishing/Forever who contributed to this book.
