  Chapter 1

“Good job, everyone,” Sheik Najid del Sabur called out. Although the early morning hours were creeping up on the group of elite soldiers, it was still dark outside. Unfortunately, sleep was not in the near future. All the men still needed to clean their weapons and debrief, not to mention come down off of the adrenaline high caused by the dangerous military exercise. It had been a successful effort, the night-time training highlighting some weaknesses and strengths in his men. They could do better, but Najid was pleased with their skills.

Walking back into the palace, Najid rubbed his face on the black tee-shirt, unconcerned about the camouflage and sweat from the night’s exertions coming off on the material. Success always felt good.

He was walking past the security offices when he heard the sound. His first instinct was to cringe in horror. His next reaction…take out his weapon and kill whatever animal was in obvious pain.

As he moved closer to the sound, his hand covered his pistol just in case. Instantly, he felt his muscles tighten in anticipation of battle, all of his senses on alert. Even his half-brother, Jual, who had been in charge of the night’s exercise as Minister of Defense, heard the sound and reacted.

Najid was already moving into the room where the sound was coming from, but what he saw didn’t make sense. The screeching sound wasn’t coming from a wounded animal. It was actually being emitted by the most amazingly beautiful woman he’d ever seen.

Okay, so at the moment, all he could see was her bottom. Her round, cute bottom covered in denim that highlighted round hips and slender shoulders. His lips compressed as he took in the magnificent sight, surveying the enticing sight that his rough palms could hold in his hands perfectly with derriere to spare. Her waist was tiny, only emphasizing how perfectly amazing that adorable butt really was. Dark, reddish-brown hair was pulled back in a French braid that started high on the back of her head and ended right between her shoulder blades.

He still had his hand on his pistol when the woman turned to the side and he saw her features in profile. Instantly, his hand tightened on the pistol-grip, fighting instincts kicking into high gear. Every muscle in his body reacted to the woman’s beauty and he almost growled.

“Ana!” his brother called out from behind him.

Najid thought about punching his brother, not wanting his view of this lovely creature disturbed. But there was no reaction from the woman and he quickly understood why. Her headphones were plugged into her ears and she was singing along to whatever was playing on her phone. Although “singing” could only loosely be used to describe what this woman was doing. Most people would not define her off-key screeching as singing.

Najid forced his muscles to relax. There was no threat, he told himself. No one was dying although, at that particular moment, she hit a high note and both he and Jual cringed at the sound.

“Ana!” Jual snapped once again, this time reaching out and pulling one of her headphones out of her ear.

“What?!” she demanded, spinning around and then almost tripping on her feet when she saw the two men standing in front of her.

“Woah!” Ana gasped when she took in the extremely lar
ge man standing not two feet from her. Her eyes moved from his black hair to the face with smudged black camouflage, then over shoulders that were impossibly wide, covered in muscles that strained the material of the black tee-shirt the man was wearing. Not only the muscles in his arms but the pectorals were…good grief, she took a deep breath, trying to regain her equilibrium. And failed. Balance was most likely not an option when this man was around, she realized suddenly.

Lean waist highlighted by a black web belt and then black pants. All black. Black tee-shirt, black cargo pants and black combat boots with enormous feet…her eyes travelled upwards and this time she noticed the pistol and the knife, cringing inwardly at the danger signals that were shooting off in her brain.

She wasn’t aware that her hands were gripping the desk behind her which caused her breasts to press against the pink material of her tee-shirt. She also wasn’t aware that those same breasts were revealing her body’s reaction to this man’s presence in a way that she would most likely not appreciate.

The reality of the situation hit her when her gaze finally reached his dark, fathomless eyes and she jerked upright, stepping backwards to put more space between herself and his enormous body.

“No!” she said with a shake of her head that smacked her braid back and forth against her shoulders. “No way, Jual. Not going to happen. I’m not learning my way on a guy this size. You can’t initiate me with someone this big. It isn’t fair!”

Najid heard the words and, because his mind was already considering what this woman would look like with her dark auburn hair loose and spread out on his pillow while he did all kinds of wonderful things to her body, including exploring her very full, very delicious looking breasts with more detail, his mind instantly jerked to the conclusion that this woman would fight the attraction that was obviously brewing between the two of them.

He almost smiled at her rejection. He would have laughed if he had been able to come down off of fight mode more quickly. But as it was, his reaction to her words was more along the lines of wanting to toss her over his shoulder and show her that he would be the only man to initiate her, the only man to touch her lovely, pale skin and tangle his hands into her soft mane of dark, sparkling hair.

But she continued to talk, looking around him to his brother once more. “Jual, you promised! You said you’d find someone small enough, someone more along my size to teach me what I want to know.”

Jual glared down at the woman in question. “Don’t worry, Ana. I’ve already spoken to Hajan. He’s agreed to pop…” he stopped and changed the direction of his words after glancing at his brother’s furious look, “initiate you. He’ll show you the ropes and give you tips.”

Najid turned around, glaring at the other man. “What the hell?! No one is going to initiate anyone!” he growled out with increasing fury. In his mind, he’d already staked a claim on this fiery woman and the idea of another man initiating her sexually was absolutely not going to happen. “Unless it is me,” he said, more to himself as he turned back to face the woman with glowing green eyes the exact color of emeralds. How any woman could have eyes that deeply green, he hadn’t a clue.

Those fascinating green eyes widened and her whole body bristled with rising anger, causing strategic parts of his body to rise as well, although not with anger but something much more powerful.

“Jual, you promised!” she asserted, looking at the other man but her eyes kept straying back to Najid. He loved the way her sexy tongue darted out, licking her lips. “You promised and I’ve done all of the boring tasks you assigned to me. The agreement was, if I explained how to use math equations to gauge human behaviour, you were going to teach me everything you know. That was the deal. I’ve held up my end of the bargain. It’s your turn and I won’t let you renege on your promise!”

Jual bristled as well, correctly understanding his brother’s interest in the woman. “I think you’re missing some significant body language right now,” he mumbled with a smirk, crossing his arms over his chest and stepping back, allowing his brother to battle this particular fight.

The woman’s slender shoulders shifted, as if she were ready to tackle either man and Najid almost laughed. She was definitely a spitfire and he loved that! Instantly, his body hardened even more and he moved closer, wanting to reach out and touch her but holding back.

The green-eyed beauty quickly stepped back, correctly interpreting Najid as a threat. “I’m a fast learner,” she told Jual, trying to keep her voice calm even as her eyes darted to Najid several times. “You know I am. And I’m smart, I can figure things out.”

Jual sighed, glancing at Najid once again, seeing the tension in his brother’s shoulders. “Not picking up on important clues, Ana!” he told her with an urgency that she simply didn’t grasp.

Ana didn’t understand what her boss was trying to say. She was too distracted by the handsome man that was crowding her. Darn it, he even smelled good!

“Yeah, well you can’t send me a lumbering ox for my first partner, no matter how gorgeous he might be,” she told him, refusing to look at the “lumbering ox” again for fear that she might do something silly. Like blush or smile like a girl or something equally ridiculous.

Jual rubbed a hand over his face, almost as if he were trying to suppress amusement. “Shut up, Ana!” he said with a warning voice.

She sighed and turned to the gorgeous man. “No offense, mister. You smell great and I’d eventually love to take you for a spin on the mat, but I need someone smaller, more my size for my first time.”

“Ana!” Jual yelled, stopping her words.

Ana turned and glared at the other man. “What?” she snapped, glaring at the other man. The quelling look in his eyes finally penetrated. She looked at the other man, then back at Jual. Glancing between the two, she finally recognized the resemblance and she gasped. “No!”

  “Yes!” he came right back.

“No!” she replied again, her eyes moving over to the taller man who had his massive arms crossed over his equally massive chest.

“Yes!” Jual replied yet again with exasperation. “I’m sorry,” he said to Najid. “She’s one of the best encryption consultants my team has ever had on staff, a brilliant mathematician, but,” and he turned to glare at Ana once more, “she’s definitely not showing her genius at the moment.”

Finally, Ana realized what was going on and her whole body started to tremble with both fear and something that didn’t make any sense so she stuck with the fear aspect of her body’s reaction. “Okay, I’m guessing I should probably bow or something right about now, right?”

“Or something,” Jual mumbled with another roll of his eyes and a long, exasperated sigh.

Najid watched the woman during the entire exchange, fascinated by the way her eyes changed, lit up and subdued when she finally recognized him. When her cheeks flamed with color, he had to restrain himself from reaching out and touching the amazing tint.

He was irritated that she wouldn’t look him in the eye but he caught the rapid beat of her pulse at the base of her neck. It hadn’t slowed down after that thorough perusal of his body moments ago. He wasn’t sure if he preferred the belligerent, fire-breathing woman or the shy, blushing creature that now stood before him. Both were fascinating although he refused to believe that a woman with her figure and those lovely, green eyes could be as innocent as her blushes seemed to imply.

And he was damn sure going to figure out why Jual was arranging for someone to “initiate” this woman. Something wasn’t making sense.

“Come with me,” he commanded and turned around, never doubting for a moment that the woman would follow.

“Do I have to?” she asked in a voice that spoke of her nervousness as well as her reluctance.

Najid stopped and turned back to her, looking down into those green eyes. For a long moment, he just stared at her, losing himself in those deep, green depths. But then he realized what he was doing and mentally shook himself. “Yes,” and he
took her wrist in his hand, pulling her along in his wake. His grip didn’t loosen, not risking her veering off down some hallway to try and get away from him.

“But I really have a lot of work to do,” Ana told the man, trying to ignore the tingling sensation in her wrist that was quickly traveling up her arm and making a beeline for her stomach. Goodness, he was so big! Everywhere she looked, the man was huge! Her fingers itched to explore the ridges of muscles on his forearm, fascinated by the way they moved under his tanned skin. And what would that light sprinkling of dark hair feel like under her fingertips, she wondered? Would it be rough? Or soft?

She was so absorbed with the man’s skin and hair that she didn’t realize that he’d led her away from the administrative area of the palace and over to the…

“I’m not going in there!” she gasped and started to pull back.

Najid laughed even as he tugged her through the doorway of his private apartment and slammed it shut behind him. “Stay here. I’ll be back in five minutes.”

Ana stared at his back with her own pressing against the door that had just been closed on her. She heard the shower start running and her heartrate picked up to triple time. Then her body became warm and soft just at the thought of him naked under the warm shower spray. Lifting a hand to her chest, she tried to slow her breathing. Closing her eyes, she squeezed them shut, refusing to picture him naked. But it was no use! All of those muscles were imprinted on her brain and she couldn’t believe how vivid her imagination could be when she had…incentive.

“Oh boy,” she whispered to herself. Ignoring the man’s order for her to remain in the apartment, she spun around, determined to escape. “I’m outta here,” she said to the empty room.

Opening the door, she poked her head outside and looked to the right and the left. Sure enough, Jual was standing there talking with the team of bodyguards. His glare told her that she wouldn’t get out of this easily. Or at all!

“Not happening, Ana,” he announced without mercy.
