‘Nervous?’
She nodded. ‘A bit.’
‘He’ll be there, you know.’
‘I know he will.’
She wasn’t nervous about that at all. She could tell that this time it was different. Gray was a completely different man, a completely different groom-to-be this time. Eager to join in with wedding arrangements, making his own suggestions, telling her how he’d like the day to go. He’d been just as excited for the day as she had. There’d been no doubt. No cold feet. At all.
Just excitement. Just joy at finally getting the day—the marriage—they both wanted. Had both dreamed of. The marriage that they knew was now within their reach.
Everyone else was waiting at the church. Her mum had travelled earlier on, with the bridesmaids. All the rest of her family were there, most of them already inside. As she got out of the car, she saw Gray’s mother and father go in, too.
The photographer wanted some pictures before she went in and dutifully she posed, her excitement building, her desire to see Gray as she walked down the aisle becoming almost unbearable.
She wanted to see his face. She wanted to hold his hand. Say her vows. Promise to be his for evermore.
The music began and she lowered her veil and took one last deep breath. She’d been here before. She’d just never got this far.
She took her father’s arm and nodded.
I’m ready.
And then the doors were open, the congregation stood and she began her walk down the aisle.
She saw Gray at the other end. Beaming with joy as the wedding music soared, almost crying at the sight of her as she walked down the aisle towards him. She could hardly take her eyes off him. He looked so handsome in his red-and-green kilt, his black jacket and brilliant white shirt. Those green eyes were smiling as she drew close, and he reached out to take her hand from her father’s.
‘You look so beautiful,’ he said.
She couldn’t speak, she felt so happy. She just took his hand and smiled shyly at him.
As the music died down, the vicar came to stand in front of them and began the service.
Beau and Gray made their vows. Gave each other a ring. And were soon declared husband and wife.
‘You may kiss your bride.’
Gray smiled, lifted up her veil and pulled her towards him for their first kiss as a married couple.
After they’d signed the register, they headed outside for more photos, and when they were standing in the glorious sunshine, waiting for the photographer to organise them into another pose, they kissed some more.
And then they heard an American voice interrupt them. ‘Er…guys, I think we told you to get a room!’
Beau laughed and turned to see all their American friends from the Yellowstone trip—Mack, Conrad, Barb and the others. All there. All happy to be sharing their wedding day.
‘Don’t worry. We will,’ said Gray. ‘Later.’
‘Who’d have guessed it would be the honeymoon suite, though?’ asked Mack.
Barb looked at Beau and winked. ‘Oh, I think we knew. Deep down, we always knew.’
Beau smiled and then kissed her husband.
