When I escaped the crush, my blood ran cold. The banshee that was my body was kneeling over Zeph's unmoving form, her lips pressed to his as though she were merely trying to wake him. But I knew better.
Rage warmed the parts of me that had gone cold and I attacked before I could overthink it. I launched one handful of flames at her and watched her scramble away, a satisfied grin on the face we shared. I didn't give her a chance to speak or even move, I launched another handful at her, and then another. I kept them coming until I started to feel drained and something caught my attention.
"Kismet, don't burn it," Gavyn wheezed. struggling to stand. A banshee came at him and he toppled a candle onto its head from a nearby table. "We can fix this."
My heart felt full as I watched them all struggle to stand up. Beaten, but alive. "Communicate with each other, okay?"
Sounds of objection followed me as I rushed forward, tripped and tackled the banshee.
"Won't you give them a chance to make it right?" she sneered at me.
I didn't bother to give her an answer. The truth was that the safety of hundred and thousands was more important than me. And being able to be around those four, even with a temporary body or no body at all? It was worth more than a body. With one final glance into my own eyes, I touched my fiery palm to her chest and watched as she immediately was engulfed.
When the flames rose up inside of my temporary body, I knew that my expiration date had arrived. The heat filled me and the world started to darken around the edges. I could hear their voices calling out to me, and it was as good of a goodbye as I was going to get. That would be enough.
The world around me flashed an all-encompassing bluish-white and, for a brief moment, the world was all bliss and beauty, lacking pain and fear. I was at peace.
Then, I knew I was gone.
THANK YOU and STUFF…
Oh boy, tears in the eyes. I repeat: TEARS IN THE EYES!
This book was a pow-wow, knock-you-down, reality call that I needed. When I dreamed of writing Kismet’s story, I never knew all of the ways it would impact my every day life.
Firstly, it showed me who a lot of my real friends were – yeah, I know, it’s cliché. Still, it’s true. With that in mind, I’d like to shout-out to the people who’ve had my back through all the crazy and own up to their shit: Yumoyori Wilson (Savage Unicorn Queen), Christina Bridges and Kayla Erickson (The Sisterhood of the Traveling Bra), Mary Martel (author extraordinaire), Cassie Starkle (she’s my PA and you can’t have her!), Zoe Parker (Epicness Queen), and Autumn Reed (Cactus Murderer).
All such wonderful, incredible people that I swear have hearts of gold. Thank you, all of you, for being the amazing people you are.
Second, a HUGE heap of love and acknowledgement to Sariah Skye, who formatted this lovely novel of weirdness, and also to Francesca Vance at Reaper Designs for the STUNNING covers that she createdand let me kidnap. What? She was neglecting them.
And lastly, thank YOU! Yes, you, the reader. Without your undying support and incredible…
Incredibleness, Kismet’s story would have never come to light. Thank you for being awesome as hell.
About the Author
Jenica Saren is an American indie author, based in a state that's none of your business.
She's magnificent, amazing, an experienced pole dancer, three-time karaoke champion, passionate chef, and entrepreneur extraordinaire. She manages all of this, and somehow is still so gracious and humble. (No, she didn't tell me to write that.)
Jenica resides under the tyrannical leadership of four cats and one toddler: Nala, Wilde, Rome, Night Ninja, and Ryder. They all have strict policies regarding her personal space, which is to say that she is allowed none.
She enjoys books, video games, and sometimes even her husband. She doesn't like to admit it, but inside of her is a screaming teen white girl, that craves Starbucks, gossip girl, and says way too many OMGs. Jenica tries to feed her at least twice a week. (She needs her strength for sale season!)
You can follow Jenica's writing adventure by following her on her Facebook page or by joining her Facebook reader group, Jenica Saren’s Troublemaker Trove. (It’s basically a purse – you never know what’s going on in there.)
