He loved that she hadn’t tried to explain away his feelings, or ask questions to glean details about the mission. He’d kept it deliberately vague because of its classified nature, just like he’d done with the funny story when he and Ivy had first met in the bar, over that order of wings that kept getting cold, and were just getting to know each other.
He’d never have guessed, even back then, that there would ever be a woman he’d want to tell that story to. But he’d wanted Ivy to understand. He’d wanted her to know that it defined who he was today, for better or for worse.
And a funny thing happened, after he’d told her his Silver Star story.
Cole never had another nightmare. Not in the entire year he’d known Ivy.
He couldn’t be sure that they were gone for good, but it was something to hope for. It was refreshing. He felt like he was capable of doing anything, as long as he had Ivy by his side.
He’d bought the engagement ring soon after that. He’d known she was the one long before, but now he was ready to announce his commitment to the world. The only trouble had been picking something that fit her beauty and was as unique as she was.
The pieces really were falling into place. He loved the way their lives wove around and through each other. How good they were together. How much they had to look forward to in the future.
Cole smiled at Ivy. Pieces falling into place? Hell, yes.
“I know exactly what you mean.”
