He had even called my sister too. She told me later when I told her everything. She and I had gotten closer after this. She had called me several times and invited me to dinner at her house and told me to bring Dad too. So the whole story seemed to have done some good. For me at least.
Sune had gotten an apology from the police and had then taken a week's vacation with Tobias and left for a cabin in Sweden. They would be back next week and we would be on to new adventures. My daughter was looking forward to seeing much more of her new best friend in the future.
Now I only had one thing left that needed to be put back in its order.
He greeted me in the driveway. Barefooted as always. I drove up to the beach house and got out of the car. I looked at him and smiled.
“I am sorry,” I said.
Giovanni took my head in his big hands and lifted it up. Then he kissed me.
When he was done, I laughed.
“What is so funny?”
“At one point I actually thought you were the killer.”
He didn’t laugh but looked at me seriously.
“Really? Why?”
Me and my big mouth I thought. Now I had offended him.
“Because you have spikes and a welder, and one of the victims was killed by two spikes that were welded into a cross.”
Now he was laughing. I was relieved.
“I am a sculptor. I make sculptures out of stone or iron by welding it. I use spikes to cut the stone.”
He put his arm around my neck and we walked into his beach house. The ocean was calm outside.
“So you really thought I could kill someone?” he asked when I had a glass of red wine in my hand.
I smiled. “Well, you fit the profile of a true psychopath,” I said and kissed him while we both laughed out loud.
