Extra Extra (Working Girl Series Book 1) Page 25

by CY Jones

“It was Nancy and Gloria wielding the knife, not me. I was the distraction in our plan. They were the enforcers.”

“Remind me later to kick your alters' asses. You scared the shit out of me when I saw you bleeding and holding a knife to your throat.”

“What happened? How did you even get inside that huge ass compound?”

“Chaz. He called Nathaniel’s father before we got on the jet to get you and explained to him what was happening. His father met us at the airport in Mexico City and drove us to the mansion. He had no clue how unhinged his son had become over his wife’s betrayal and wanting an heir. He promised to make sure Nathaniel receives the help he needs if we keep our mouths shut about the whole incident.”

“Do you think he’ll keep his word?” I frown doubtful.

“Yes. If not for our sake then for Chaz’s. He’s smart enough to know not to make an enemy out of a Vanderbilt.”

“Oh, well that’s good,” I mumble incoherently against his skin. I was tired from the emotional rollercoaster of a day I had, and my eyes were starting to droop.

“Shh, firecracker, get some sleep. I’ll be here when you wake up.” Holding him to his word, I shut my eyes, and just before falling into a blissful sleep I hear my husband say, “I love you.”

  Epilogue

  One Month Later - Brooklyn

It has been quite the month. True to his word, Nathaniel’s father admitted him into some kind of spa like treatment center. Despite all he put me through, I didn’t ask for anything else from them except a heads up whenever he’s released. Nathaniel was (too much crazy) to be cured with just one stint in what’s essentially a resort for the rich. For his sake, I hope he gets the help that he needs and stay the fuck away from me and my family.

With all the shit-show Nathaniel caused, his father took control of his son and threatened to cut him off if he didn’t keep his distance and stopped causing trouble for Andrew and the company, which is good because I was rehired by the new CEO. The job included a substantial raise increase and benefits. Going back to work for Drew was the first real fight Justin and I ever had. The alpha side of him wants me to stay the fuck away from Drew and I understand that I do, but I need him to understand that, no man will ever control my career. My new job offer came with a new office on the top floor next to Drew’s, not ideal, but at least no more bitchy Susan, sayonara and good riddance.

Now I spend most of my time working out of the office, chasing stories and reporting them. So basically the same job as before, but I don’t have to ask for permission to report my findings. I’m also doing online interviews and podcasts. I even have my own web page setup and everything, and have become quite the internet sensation.

After careful consideration (me not giving him any), Justin got over himself and finally came to terms with my decision. He’s a wonderful husband and smart. He knows at times he’ll have to share his pants with me to make this relationship work.

When we broke the news to my brother and Paige about being married, Harrison didn’t speak to me for a couple of weeks. He was pissed and understandably so. Even though it hurt like hell, I gave him the time he needed to come to terms with everything and yeah, gave Paige free rein to kick his ass. Out of the two, I was worried she’d be the one to have issues about the marriage, but she was over the moon for us and couldn’t have been happier that we ended up together for the long haul. It wasn’t until my brother FaceTime me that I learned that he wasn’t pissed at me or even Justin, but himself. He felt like he’d failed as a big brother because I was going through hell, and he didn’t know.

Ever since the promise he made at our father’s funeral, Harrison has always had it in his head that it’s up to him to solve my problems and chase away the Bogeyman. The fact that I couldn’t go to him about what I was feeling towards Justin gutted him and then cut deeper by not being at the wedding, fulfilling his brotherly duties of walking me down the aisle. Yeah, that was a tearful video chat on both ends. It has been a slow process, but we’re getting back to the way we were before, rebuilding our sibling relationship. He’s even been cordial to Justin, which is a big step. It’ll take time, but I have hope we’ll all heal.

Last week Justin and I invited Andrew over for dinner to clear the air. We all really needed to talk. All of us had so much to say to one another and didn’t know how to initiate the conversation. Nathaniel and Drew’s father literally turned our lives upside down and filled them with chaos and mayhem. Drew was just as much a victim as I was. He may have gone about it in the wrong way, but he was only trying to keep me safe and clean up the mess his father made by getting in bed with the Bishops.

Drew assured me he was never actually going to release the video. He only wanted me to think he would so that he could keep me close and away from Nathaniel and his spies. He told me that the only reason why Nathaniel had seen it in the first place was because he’d hired someone to hack Drew’s computer and stumbled across it when stealing company files. Not going to lie, I still worry about it being accessible in that lunatic’s hands, but Nathaniel’s father assured me that the only copy has been destroyed. But better safe than sorry. To protect me, Justin had an NDA drawn up, which all parties involved signed.

I hate what happened to us, but because it pushed me towards Justin I can’t say I regret anything. I have a big heart and sometimes I find myself wishing I can be selfish and have both of them, but it’s a fantasy that’ll never happen. I’m just thankful to have them both in my life.

Understandably, Drew was furious to find out Rebecca had drugged him that night at the club when he fucked her. This whole time, he thought he’d gotten shit-faced and made the biggest mistake of his life. When I asked him about the baby, he'd told me that he’d take care of it if it's his but wants nothing to do with the mother. Her family isn’t pushing him anymore after learning about their daughter’s deceit and unladylike actions to bag a husband, who to them shouldn’t have even been in the running in the first place. Currently, she’s almost four months pregnant. Her parents sent her away to their vacation home in Switzerland in exile and that’s where she will stay until the baby is born. “Rich people,” Gloria mutters, rolling her eyes.

Speaking of babies. I should sue whoever created the Depo Shot, because surprise, surprise, I am almost four-weeks preggo. Apparently, Justin knocked me up during those epic two days after our wedding. I wasn’t planning on being a mom this early in my life, I still have so much to accomplish, but I can’t say that I’m upset about it. Justin will make a great dad. When I told him, he picked me up and spun me in the circle before putting me back down, afraid he was shaking the baby. Weirdo. He then got down on his knees, kissed my flat stomach and told the tiny bean that he loved it then told me the same. It was quite the touching scene.

Because of how I’d hurt my brother by keeping secrets, I immediately called him the news. When I told him he was going to be an uncle, he and Paige cried like babies. What saps. He’s happy for me, and he’ll love his niece or nephew when he or she is born.

Chaz is Chaz. He’s still here with us in New York and is excited about the baby and being an uncle, but he's been very secretive lately. I have yet to scratch the surface of his relationship between him and his parents. He’s been spending a lot of time with them lately, helping his mom look after his dad. He’s also claimed his throne as king in the high-society world he was kicked out of. He’s hurting, having gone through a lot, and I hate that he won’t let me fully be there for him. He says he doesn’t want to stress me because of the baby, but we both know that’s total bullshit. He was keeping things from me before we learned about bean.

He still hasn't told me what happened with his ex, but when he’s ready, my ear and a pint of ice cream will be waiting. I hope for his parent’s sake, they are treating him well and not using his father’s medical scare to guilt him into changing, or I’ll kick their asses, pregnant or not. He’s fabously gay, and there’s nothing wrong with that. He’s sweet and l
oving, and one day he will make the right man a great husband.

Justin’s new branch here is taking off better than he expected. His office building is actually not far from mine, just a short walk away. It just opened for business two weeks ago, but already he needs to hire more employees to deal with the overflow of clients. He says it’s because of pure luck why he’s doing so well, I say, it’s his pretty face. The pretentious rich assholes here love a shiny new boy-toy to flaunt around and pretend like they discovered him. As long as they keep their hands to themselves, I don’t care if they act like they discovered him. His net worth has grown substantially, and he’s thinking about opening another branch. His dream is to expand his network, so he can take Anderson Reality global. Whatever he decides to do, I’ll support him. For richer or poor, I’m here until the end.

I haven't been able to find my park friend. Every lunch break, I still go to that same bench, hoping to see her again. I’ve even hired a private investigator, but he hasn’t had much luck locating her either. I didn’t have much info to give him, only a vague description. I pray she’s not dead, just lost. At least with her being lost, there's hope I'll find her one day. It was all because of her sage advice that my life is so full. I owe her so much, and maybe it’s selfish, but I want to be the one here for her. Pay it forward. Sometimes I think she was my guardian angel sent here to save me when I was at my lowest. She gave me the strength to fight, and I will forever be grateful to her.

Life is good. Perfect really. Me, Sophia, Shelly, Gloria, and Nancy couldn’t be happier. We may be a little bit Extra, but who cares. We wouldn’t want to be any other way.

  Note From The Author

This story I hold close to my heart. My daughter suffers from a severe mental disability and it can be very challenging on her with her day to day life. Although her disability differs from Brooklyn’s, I wanted to shed light on mental issues period and all it involves. That even though they have things going on in their head we may not understand, those who suffer are still kickass people.

I also touched on rape within a comitted relationship. This is a very real problem and I hope my book has brought awareness to it. You are not alone. If my books can help even one person, it’s a job well done in my book.

I like to thank the team of people who helped make this book possible. I will not be where I am now without my Chaos Ladies. Thank you for always being there for me to bounce ideas off of, and kick me in gear when I’m being lazy. You guys mean the world to me, and even though we’re spread out all over the world, I’ve never felt closer to a group of ladies.

I like to thank my editor Dani. It has been a lot of late nights, but we got it done. Rachael, you are a godsend. Next time I’ll do better on my deadlines, lol. Thank you for always telling me the truth and not sugar coating.

To Kassie, Victoria, you guys are the best. You’ve been on my team since day one and I’d be lost without you.

To all my readers. I write because of you. 2020 has been hard on me and my health, but I have you to thank for pulling me through. Your well wishes, understanding, and encouragement has been astounding. Truly there is no me without you. I hope to continue writing stories you love. If I can transport you to my world with all my crazy characters, I’m doing my job right. Keep a lookout for more because I have lots to say. I love you guys.

Last but not least, to my family. Jayden, Mya, and Zoey. Thank you for putting up with all mommy’s crazy babbling, and me stopping whatever I’m doing to jot an idea or scene from one of my characters down in my many notebooks all over the house. Thank you for being you and all the joy you have brought me. Skittles, you are the best service dog ever, my beloved fur baby. Mommy loves you all more than pizza and chicken nuggets.. <3
