Megan grinned, but he ignored it.

He didn’t ignore the wince of discomfort on her face. But he did continue, “That I will bear true faith and allegiance to this relationship; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of boyfriend, and later husband, on which I am about to enter.” He paused. “So help me God.”

She smiled wide, but not so wide he didn’t see that she was in pain.

  “You need rest.”

“Only if you kiss me again. To seal the deal.”

He did as she asked. Both of them were smiling.

Their lives weren’t perfect, or safe. That didn’t matter. God had brought them together, and He had charged Adrian with loving this woman. A woman so very worthy of the best kind of love he was capable of giving her.

Adrian fully intended to spend the rest of his life fulfilling his duty to keep her safe, and making sure she knew exactly how blessed he was to do it.

  So help him God.

  One Hour Later

Adrian didn’t even take his coat off before he downloaded the email that had come from Remy onto a secure server. Megan’s mysterious friend had found what they’d all been looking for these past weeks. Months, even.

She’d discovered who was behind all this.

He scanned down the pages and felt his eyes widen as he took all the information in. Not proof. This was a series of indications and ties, circumstantial. Remy had pulled it all together like a complicated algorithm that added up to one thing.

The only possible identity for the blackmailer.

A second later he tugged out a flash drive he’d transferred it onto. Turned around and walked out of the office. Once he was on the street, he pulled out his phone and called Bradley.

  “Yeah?”

Adrian tried to breathe, but there was no air. He was going to have to hide this information until the time was right. “I know who the blackmailer is.”

There was a second of silence, and then, “And?”

“This is worse than any of us imagined.”

  Chapter 1

Rachel slipped the cell phone into her purse. A phone that didn’t belong to her. She walked through the first floor of the West Wing, headed for the correct office. Smiled to a couple of staffers. Ducked her head, and kept going.

Just another day, another senator visiting a colleague in the government. Nothing abnormal about that. Though, that depended on why he’d summoned her. And it had been a summons—no way to get out of it. He wanted to talk to her.

She nodded to the intern, then tapped on the door and waited.

  “Come in.”

Rachel took a breath and twisted the handle. She pasted a pleasant smile on her face and went inside…

Where the blackmailer sat at his desk, an equally pleasant smile on his face. Both of them faking politeness in order to get this done. Have this meeting—whatever it was going to be about—and then get on with their individual plans.

Did he know that she knew who he really was?

Did he know she was going to destroy him?
