by Jack Kinsley
It created the impression of a dark depthless stare looking out his pale skin from the mirror's reflection, as if a stranger was looking out at him from the inside. From now on, he believed those eyes would always be watching him.
Ana had said something to Travis the moment before she fired, but the previous deafening shots had made it nearly inaudible — and there was only one word he was sure of. But now he was absolutely certain of the exact phrase she had spoken.
"Everyone should live with a scar."

Acknowledgments
There are many people who have inspired me along the way: young, old, ages in between, loves, past loves, people from a stark variety of backgrounds, occupations, and countless artists. Some I've had the humbling opportunity to meet — some I never will have the chance to — and others I can only hope to one day.
I'd like to first thank my mother who instilled the belief in me that I could accomplish anything I put my mind to. If it hadn't been for her unconditional love and unwavering support, I wouldn't have lived the extraordinary diverse life I've lived so far. Although she's passed, her memory continues to drive me to accomplish my goals today. I miss you, Mom! Then there's my dad, Guyol, who's been an artistic inspiration to me since I was wetting diapers, and to return the favor, I grew up only to consistently scaring the shit out of him with every new career path I've taken. Don't worry dad, this is the one! Don't worry! And yes, I did curse in that previous line...let it go. And then there's my sister, Manon — you didn't think I was going to leave you out it did you? You're my only sis and I wouldn't trade you for anything in the world! You've been there for me on so many occasions, occasions you probably never even realized, and I want to thank you for being that rock when the ground starts to feels like it's giving way. But let's not forget all the amazing times we've shared together, because there's been plenty! And I love it when you curse in French... So bisou and en fen chien!
In short...a big thanks to my family!
The rest of you probably know who you are, but I do need to mention a handful by name: Carina Thorsen (you inspired me to make the trip to Thailand and you fill me with beer and sushi when I come home — that includes you too, Rod), The Corletts (for the wine and cheese nights — I'm not a big drinker, I swear — and for the always random, but interesting conversation), The Sheltons (get'er done), The Boivins (the morning coffees with the coconut milk creamer — it was also great to sleep in my old bed), The Milhones (the phenomenal wine and food), The Ciccarellis (that includes you C Squared), Dean (I just can't call you Richard, sorry), Mr. Sullivan (my high school English teacher who gave me Catcher in the Rye to read during my sophomore year — even though it was banned from schools at the time — I believe the statute of limitations are up), and if I've left anyone out, then it's probably because I've got a touch of A.G.E. I'll buy you a drink if I've forgotten you.
I want to thank my editor, Jen Blood, who helped me refine CLUB MEDicine for what it is today! By the way, there will be another original manuscript on the way soon — fair warning.
I would like to end this tirade with a nod to the artists who truly inspire me. They are in no particular order and many, if not most, are musicians: John Steinbeck, Stephen King, William Golding, Albert Camus, , The White Stripes / Jack White, The Band Of Skulls, Iggy Pop, Led Zepplin, Mazzy Star, Cesaria Evora, PJ Harvey, Tom Waits (your lyrics always incite my imagination), Radiohead, Lou Reed, Augustines (formerly We Are Augustines), John Lennon, John Lee Hooker, Nick Cave (and your Bad Seeds), Elvis Costello, Johnny Cash, Muddy Waters... and The Kills. You rock!
