“Moi?” Stevie asked, pointing a finger at herself, eyebrows raised. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
Arie chuckled and hooked an arm around her shoulders. Violet watched them together and smiled. Her heart was brimming with a wildfire’s worth of warmth. This moment, this day, here, with her friends, felt like living.
She thought of her task list with a single item.
Live.
“You coming?” Arie asked. He and Stevie stood in the hallway, looking back at her, waiting. Arie held out his hand for her, with Stevie still caught under his other arm.
Violet smiled and placed her hand in his.
His thumb brushed across her knuckles.
Live, my little spider.
Promise. Promise. Promise.

Acknowledgments
There’s a lot of people to thank for this book. I want to start with a special thank you to Sergent Gonzales. Thank you for answering all my questions about combat wounded veterans and your patience in the face of my ignorance. Thank you to Mike and Nalana Lillie. Any mistakes I made in the portrayal of a solider were my own.
Special thanks to Arrowhead Editing, Najla Qamber Designs, my amazing critique readers—Stephanie and Nillu, every single person in my Facebook reader group, the wonderful ladies who helped me release this book and keep me sane, and of course, Nate. Although, if we’re being honest, I think you should be thanking me because I was definitely not as neurotic and weird while I wrote this book. You’re welcome.
And last but not least, thank you Wylla, Drax, and Mandy. For dancing with me, listening so well, barking so I knew when to hide because the mailman was in the driveway, barking so I remembered to feed you, barking so I would get up to let you go outside, helping with plot holes, and making me laugh at your farts. And poisoning me with them too. I’m looking at you, Drax. You’re nasty.
