Finally Adrienne thought of something. “Try Woofie,” she said. “He was mom’s first dog. She used to want to name all of our dogs that.”
I punched in the name.
“Did you?” I asked absentmindedly.
“Hell, no. It’s a stupid name,” said Adrienne.
“It worked! I’m in!” I knew just what to look for. I had worked long and hard on an insurance deal. While I was working out an honest but equitable way to resolve a difference with a client, Lisa had been trying to find a way to screw both the insurance company and the client. I glanced through the file. It was all here. She had moved, as if to settle with the insurance company; yet at the same time, she was sending letters to the client threatening to sue. She had made the letters look as if they were being sent from an attorney’s office. What an idiot! She had used the name of an actual attorney. This was going to be so easy. I had her.
Just as I started to print the file, I heard someone at the front door. It was the cleaning lady. Adrienne heard her, too. Quietly she ran and shut the door.
“What can I do?” I whispered. “I can’t print this.”
Adrienne smiled and opened her mother’s desk drawer. “Here,” she said and held up a flash drive.
“Great.” I copied everything. I closed the file and shut down the computer. We could hear the cleaning lady moving down the hall. My hands were shaking with fear and with something else, excitement. Adrienne walked over to the closet. She beckoned for me to follow her. The closet was dark. She was fumbling with something. “Now what?” I asked.
“Now, this,” she said and opened a door to the outside. “Mom uses this door when she wants to evade a client.”
No wonder Lisa was always so hard to catch. “Out of the closet,” I quipped, and then it happened. The alarm started to sound. I heard the cleaning lady scream. We ran for the rear parking lot and Adrienne’s car.
Adrienne drove like a bat out of hell. I leaned into the seat and started laughing. Then she started, and we just could not seem to stop. This was so great. Lisa was toast. Boy, was she toast. I didn’t realize it then, but the files on that flash drive made the file I copied look like small potatoes.Lisa was in to far deeper shit than I had realized.

Adrienne dropped me back by the apartment and went on to work. We made plans for lunch. I settled back to do a little light computer reading, but what I found on that flash drive blew my mind. Lisa had been the main contact for most of the building supply companies and some of the major contractors. Not only had she been skimming on accounts, she had an inside relationship with one of the adjustors, Brad Partin. She and Brad had worked every angle. They had several contractors they referred people to on a regular basis, and they received kick-backs from them as well. Lisa had a good thing going there. She was working the system from both ends. She had only gotten away with the whole deal because of Brad Partin. I wondered what her relationship with him entailed. Was it business or pleasure or both?
I wanted to call Marilyn and fill her in on a few things, but I didn’t need to land in too much trouble myself. How to do it? How to make sure Lisa would be exposed and not jeopardize myself? I was just about to call Marilyn anyway, when Adrienne called. “Hey, guess who has been calling me all morning long?”
“Gee, let me see,” I said, “the Queen of Luxemburg or your mother, the Queen of the Bitches?”
“You guessed it,” she said. “She wants to talk to me this afternoon, but first she’s meeting some guy for lunch. She said that she wouldn’t be free until two or two-thirty.”
“Really, did she say what his name was?”
“Yeah, something with a B, Bob or Brent. Wait, no. It’s Brad. Why?”
It was my lucky day. “Where’s she meeting him?”
“I don’t know. She didn’t say, but she’s at the office.” I knew that Lisa always left the office dead on at twelve. I needed to follow her. Maybe I would call Marilyn after all. See if she wanted to have lunch. I had a feeling she might be very interested in this newest development.

Marilyn and I sat in her car behind the parking garage waiting for Lisa to leave for lunch. I could not really believe this sixty-five year old woman was willing to go sleuthing with me, but she had jumped at the chance once I told her what I had found out and what my plan was. I did not want to return to the company; too much had happened, but I did want justice, and I was honest. I wanted a little revenge. I did not tell Marilyn, but actually, I wanted a lot of revenge.
We followed Lisa across town to the Village, a very up-scale shopping area with lots of high-end restaurants and clubs. Marilyn pulled her car into a parking space just a few down from Lisa. We settled back to wait. I called Adrienne and told her where to meet me. Our plans had changed a little, but we would have lots of time later for fun. Now we had work to do. I wanted to see Lisa’s face when she realized I had turned her in. It was what she had most feared, and what had driven her to have me harnessed. I wanted her to realize that I was her worst enemy at that moment.
Marilyn and I walked a discreet distance from Lisa and followed her into the Black Walnut restaurant. It was a very nice but casual place frequented by business associates and the like. Guess who was waiting? Brad Partin. I pointed him out to Marilyn.
“That’s the guy. He’s the adjustor that has been helping her with all of the deals. They’ve got a big scam working against Davis Lumber right now. They are threatening Davis with a lawsuit for faulty materials through the client and hitting the insurance company for wind damage. Everything goes through Partin.”
Marilyn and I moved to a table close to the back of the restaurant and ordered. As we waited, she leafed through some of the files I had downloaded. The longer she browsed through the material, the madder she got.
“Well, Little Miss Lisa seems to have been awfully busy. No wonder she didn’t want you around.” She looked at a few more papers. “How did you get this,” she asked. I pulled a Lisa; I just shrugged and smiled. “Oh, you’ve learned that from her, huh,” Marilyn said and laughed. “Well, I can’t blame you for keeping your silence. I do appreciate getting this material. Wait until the board hears about this.”
“Oh there’s more,” I said.
“More?”
“We need to follow her one more place, but first, let’s eat.” We settled back to finish our lunch and wait for Adrienne. It was not long until I saw her car pull up outside. “I’ll ride with Adrienne, and you follow behind. I have a real good idea where Lisa and Brad will go next. I told Marilyn my hunch.”
“Oh, this is great,” she said. It was not long, before Lisa and Brad left the Black Walnut and headed for the Shade Tree Inn. It was close by and very popular with couples wanting a quickie after lunch. An up-scale place that charged by the hour, the Inn was very accommodating to many business folk.
As Lisa and Brad got out of Brad’s car, Adrienne and I pulled in behind them, blocking them in. Then Marilyn pulled up alongside our car. Brad scooted back in the car, but Lisa just stood looking at me. Adrienne was taking pictures of the entire event, and Marilyn was walking around the cars to confront Lisa.
I hopped out of the car and held up the flash drive. “Oh, Lisa,” I called. “You’ll never guess what I found. I guess you dropped it in my car the other day when we went out to lunch. You remember, before you tried to crucify me?”
She knew. The look on her face was priceless. I’ll never forget it; I have copies of Adrienne’s pictures. I handed the drive to Marilyn.
“Here, Marilyn, the board should be very interested in this material.”
“Hey, that’s mine,” Lisa said and reached for the flash drive. “Oh, no, Lisa. Finders keepers, losers weepers,” I sang. Marilyn just looked at Lisa and shook her head. My deed was done. Revenge was sweet, but I still had a little unfinished business.

“Is this really your room?” I asked Adrienne. I looked around the pink and purple ruffled bedroom. Ballerinas d
anced across the border of the room, while musical notes played in the background.
“It was my room. Mom never changed the décor. Can you believe it?” she asked.
I could. I was in Adrienne’s old room in Lisa’s house about to make love. It was my final act of revenge. Would it be sweet? Adrienne interrupted my musings. “Do you think she will catch us?” she asked fearfully and hopefully.
“Do you want her to?” I asked.
She was indecisive. “Yes. No. I don’t know,” she pouted.
I loved that pout. I would make it happen. Slowly, I pulled her shirt over her head. She giggled in anticipation. I reached around her and released her bra. I continued to undress her, until she was naked and ready: the pouting princess upon her pink and purple bed. It was perfect.
“Aren’t you going to undress?” she asked.
“Maybe, in a little while, but first I want to make love to you, just like this.” I decided to keep my clothes on just in case I needed to escape from her bedroom window or something. As I continued to lick and finger Adrienne, her response grew. She was so loud. Somewhere in the background, I heard a door open. Lisa was home. I put my hand across Adrienne’s mouth. Her eyes grew wide, as she heard the sounds of her mother returning home. “What if she catches us? What will you say to her?”
“Oh, Adrienne,” I sighed. “I’ll just say—Lisa, paybacks are hell!”
