“Hey,” she said as she stepped inside.
Drace looked up from the map of the city he had on his desk and smiled. “Hi.”
“What are you doing?”
“Nothing really. Just looking.” He folded the map. He looked at her. “Take a seat. We’ve had some news.”
Kiri sat at her desk that was across from Drace’s. “About?”
He waited a few seconds before he answered. “Cax.”
Kiri leaned forward. “Tell me.”
“He was taken to the mother ship a couple of days ago.”
“That’s good news. Now we know where he is.”
Drace shook his head. “Yes and no. Yes, we know where he was two days ago, but he might not be there still.” He paused. “It means Thalar has seen him, and more than likely decided what will be Cax’s fate. Now this is only rumors that some of our spies have heard on the other ships, but some think our leader planned to execute Cax as a traitor. And that it was to happen shortly after Cax arrived on the mother ship.”
Kiri shook her head. “I don’t believe that. Actually, I know for a fact Cax is still alive.”
“How?”
She hadn’t told anyone that she’d bonded with Cax that day on the San Diego ship. Kiri had wanted to hold on to it as her secret for as long as she could, but now was the time to let it out in the open.
Kiri held up the inside of her left wrist toward Drace. Where Cax had bitten her was still visible. The bite mark a faint pink scar. “Because of this. Before we made our move to free the adults, Cax and I did a blood exchange. We bonded as mates. I can ‘feel’ him. I can sense he’s still alive. I’d know if he were dead.”
Drace jumped up and came around the desks to take hold of her wrist. He looked at it, then her. He pulled her to her feet and gave her a crushing hug. He gave her a large smile as he let her go.
“Why didn’t you say anything about it until now?”
She shrugged. “I wanted to keep the secret as mine.”
“Well, you’ve just made the job of rescuing Cax a little easier.”
“How so?”
“As his bonded mate, you can sense him wherever he is, which means if you are in the general area, you’ll be able to pinpoint exactly where he is being held.”
“Cax did tell me I’d be able to find him on the San Diego ship if we happened to be separated that night.”
“He was right.” Drace gave her another tight squeeze. “I’ll call in some of our warriors. We have some rescuing plans to make. If only Cax and you would dream walk, he could tell you where to find him.”
Kiri sat at her desk as Drace left the office to find the warriors he wanted to talk to. She wished she could dream walk with Cax as well. For some reason, he hadn’t come to her in her sleep, not once. She’d tried to contact him that way, but nothing had worked.
She rubbed the bite mark on the inside of her wrist and reached out through their bond to Cax. Kiri smiled when she felt him do the same. No, he wasn’t dead. It might not be tomorrow or the next day that they would be together once more, but the day would come. She wouldn’t give up until her mate was free.
