I looked up to the security guard at the portal. He was watching the players. Why wasn’t he coming down? He knew the drill. If they didn’t move on their own, security intervened.
“I’m only going to ask one more time before I have security remove you. Please leave.”
She smirked. “I don’t think so.”
The guard still wasn’t moving.
“What’s your name.”
She looked up at me and smiled sweetly. “Madeline Romney.”
I pursed my lipped and eyed her. Romney, as in Coach Romney? He had an older daughter, but she lived in Chicago.
Why hadn’t anyone told me she was coming back?
A whistle blew on the ice grabbing my attention. Coach was skating toward us waving with the whistle still in his mouth. He came up to the glass beaming…like a proud dad.
“Hi, honey!” I heard him over the sound of blades on the ice.
Great.
“Hi, Dad!” Madeline waved, then looked to me. “Do I still need to leave?”
“Of course not.” I waved to him and took a seat next to her. “You could have led with that.”
She laughed. “And miss your reaction. I thought flames were going to fly from your head.”
“I wasn’t that bad.”
She turned to face me. “No, but I don’t think you like being ignored.”
“Not really.” I shrugged. “So, you’re Coach’s daughter.”
“Yup. Who are you married to?”
My jaw dropped, and she snickered. “I’m not.”
“Not yet?”
“What? No. I’m Erik Schultz’s sister.”
Her eyebrow shot up. “Nice.”
“And I’m dating Reese Murray.”
Her other brow raised. “So I wasn’t that far off.”
“No.” I shook my head. This girl was going to keep me on my toes. “How long are you here?”
“Who knows.”
“You aren’t visiting?”
She shook her head. “Nope. We just moved here.”
“We?”
“Me and my boyfriend.”
I looked over at Coach Romney. How did he feel about that?
“Well, welcome to the family.” I pointed over to where I’d been sitting. “That’s the Pride. You’re more than welcome to join us whenever you’re here. We have a section reserved for games too, so let me know if you’ll be there and I’ll reserve you a seat.”
“Thanks. I usually watch with my mom, though.”
Duh. Of course, she did.
“Right. Well, the offer stands.” I stood. “It was nice to meet you, Madeline.”
“You too…”
“Chloe.”
I waved and walked back to the Pride.
“Who was that?” They were all asking the same question, so I addressed the group.
“That’s Madeline Romney, Coach’s daughter. She just moved here, so be sure you make her feel welcome.”
A few of the women stood immediately and left to sit with her. We didn’t like new people floating around, but the minute we discovered they were family, they were welcomed with open arms.
“So, any pukers?”
Emma nodded. “Three so far.”
I scanned the ice and saw Erik, Reese, Porter, and Olli leading the group. At least it wasn’t any of our guys. I watched them stay together as they glided to each goal line.
When the final whistle blew, Sophia was the winner. She did a little dance and demanded we each bring her candy at the next practice as her prize.
Reese skated up to the glass and removed his helmet.
I waved, and he smiled.
“I love you!” He yelled so the whole group could hear him. I shook my head and wished my face wasn’t turning red. He’d taken every opportunity to tell me in front of people. Not that I minded the public declarations. It was just going to take some getting used to.
“I love you.”
He smiled and turned to head to the locker room. Reese was waiting for him, shaking his head.
I couldn’t keep the smile off my face. There was nothing better than seeing the two men I cared about most in the world getting along, especially when I thought it would never, ever happen.

About the Author
Brittney has been an avid reader for as long as she can remember. Her parents’ form of punishment growing up was taking away her books and making her go outside to play. She loves the beach, exercising, sleeping in, and cookies. Yes, she does know those contradict each other. She’s an obsessive dog lover and is slowly learning to appreciate the mountains she lives in. Nature can be okay, sometimes.
