Over the past several years, though, she suffered repeated health setbacks, first becoming virtually house-bound, then bed-ridden. And Bob was always there, devoted, patient, and watchful. She still worked on her writing whenever possible, still concocting stories, making plans, discussing projects. Each time we visited, she seemed weaker, with some new setbacks, requiring round-the-clock care. She had lost most of her hearing and suffered from increasing dementia, although she did perk up and recognize us every time. At our last visit in May, she was in a great deal of discomfort. This was a long, hard ordeal for her, and we will miss her very much. I can only hope that she is now sailing the bright seas of her imagination.

Artist DAVID GROVE, 72, died October 25, 2012 of emphysema at his home in San Francisco CA. Grove was an accomplished illustrator who produced covers and interior art for most of the major SF/F publishers. He was also known for his movie posters, most famously the film adaptation of Ray Bradbury’s Something Wicked This Way Comes (1983). Some of his work was collected in David Grove: An Illustrated Life (2011). He was inducted into the Illustrators’ Hall of Fame in 2007, and a retrospective of his work was mounted at the Museum of American Illustration in New York this past summer.

David Grove’s painting for Something Wicked This Way Comes

Born February 27, 1940 in Washington DC, Grove’s family moved to Philadelphia in 1947, where he took classes at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. He attended Syracuse University on a scholarship, studying first industrial design and later advertising design. He worked as a photographer after college, then moved to Paris in 1964, where he began doing illustration work and played jazz piano. After a few years in Paris and London he moved to San Francisco in 1969, where he remained for the rest of his life. He is survived by Heather Elmer, his partner of 25 years.

British fan artist ALAN HUNTER, 89, died August 1, 2012 in Bournemouth, Dorset after a long illness.

Alan Joseph Hunter was born February 19, 1923, and illustrated the covers and interiors of many magazines and fanzines, including the first two covers of Nebula SF in 1952 and 1953; he was also art consultant for the magazine. His interior drawings appeared in Nebula and New Worlds throughout the 1950s, and he contributed work to Algol/Starship, Science Fiction Chronicle, It Goes on the Shelf, Science Fantasy Bulletin, and The Zone, among others. He also did cover illustrations for small-press novels, collections, and anthologies. He continued illustrating until the end of his life, with some of his latest work appearing in Banana Wings in 2009. Hunter also wrote occasional short SF, notably ‘‘The Piper’’ (1953).

  EDITORIAL MATTERS

Back from a cold and grey World Fantasy in Toronto. The Monday before the trip I received my first trip advisory (possible cancellation) for my flight through Philadelphia to Toronto. Looking at the web storm forecasts, Philadelphia was right in the path of Sandy. I had planned to fly as late as possible on a red-eye on Wednesday night so I could do some trick or treating with the girls, I mean the Dragon and the Spider-Witch, before I left. I had my fingers crossed the flight would be after Sandy swept through, since it was only a four-day trip and leaving later would put a real squeeze on my time in Canada.

Here in California, we kept our eye on breaking news and compulsively refreshed news sites, watching in horror while the super-storm crept up on the East Coast. So far it seems like most people we know out there have checked in. Jen Brehl sent an astonishing set of photos of her downed trees, and Tanya Doherty told me stories about getting out the buckets – again – to catch water coming in the windows. We hope you out there on the other coast are doing all right, and have been spared the worst of the effects of the storm. My flight turned out to be fine, with hardly a bump, and I even managed a little sleep.

The World Fantasy Convention itself was a delight as always – busy but not frantic. My friend Kim Greyson, who was also the GoH liaison, took time out to pick me up at the airport (and to take care of my trip back to the airport). Since we both have such crazy con schedules these days, the tradition of him picking me up has also become the only time we get to catch up, so I was very glad to see him. I got in, muddled around with rooms a bit with the front desk, and then dove right in, going to lunch with Jonathan Strahan, Karen Lord, and Alisa Krasnostein. I quickly discovered the problem with the hotel restaurant’s open plan, encompassing the bar, business center, Starbucks counter, and lobby. The conversations in the place alone amounted to a cacophony, and I couldn’t understand a word from anyone other than Jonathan, who can project when he needs to. That was about the only complaint I had about the hotel really, the restaurant food was fine, the bar service too slow as always, but mostly it would have improved greatly for a little separation in seating areas.

I interviewed a few people while there, including Lavie Tidhar from the UK, Isobelle Carmody from Australia (though now residing in Prague), and Tim Powers – who I don’t get to see enough despite the fact that he too is a California local. I had my annual get-together with Jo Fletcher and Ian Drury, who gave me the scoop on up and coming authors to look for and an optimistic overview of current British publishing. She has a strong list of new authors coming out, and I’m looking forward to seeing the titles.

The hotels had that cold-weather-city setup, with underground tunnels and hallways linking the buildings, that we don’t really see in the West. I never ventured out much past the hotel – it was 40 degrees after all and I am a California native – except for dinners. I took advantage of the strong international influx at World Fantasy to go out with some of my favorite Aussies and more: Garth Nix, Sean Williams, Alisa Krasnostein, along with Robert Shearman, Ellen Klages, Gary Wolfe & Stacie Hanes. There was a great meal with the Dohertys, including Linda who I haven’t spent much time with before, and Brandon Sanderson; one with John Berlyne & Bella Pagan, Daryl Gregory, and Graham Joyce; and a celebratory dinner with Guy Gavriel Kay, John Silbersack, Gary, Stacie Hanes, Illana Teitelbaum, and Guy’s son Sam, with whom I share a birthday. We toasted Charles, as always, and then birthdays in general. I altogether had too many desserts, but birthdays are birthdays! There was always a sense of preoccupation with the East Coasters, the aftermath of the storm present in everyone’s thoughts, but we managed to have some good conversations regardless.

  BACK AT THE RANCH

We did have a couple of visitors this month – locusite-at-large Amelia Beamer departed from Australia and came to visit her
California friends before continuing her trek to Japan. Kind of the long way around…. We had a great lunch – Zachary’s pizza! – and she regaled us with her tales of travel and well-being. Paolo Bacigalupi also came in, having been cut loose for a day during a family visit for Devali. It was great to get a chance to catch up, and we had Bakesale Betty chicken sandwiches that day – oh the joy of having visitors! He managed to write a thousand words while hanging out at the office. Very impressive. We’re also looking forward to a visit from our $1,000 donor from our Kickstarter in the coming month; I’ll let you know how that goes.

The Recommended Reading List is in progress – the big list of titles for the year has gone out to the reviewers and others, and I’ve got a pile of books to catch up on myself. Interns Bob and Alora have been counting stories for the magazine summary and we’ll be sending out requests for more information and comments soon. Carolyn is already buried in work with book summary tabulations, etc. and the game is on!

On top of everything else, we’re getting ready to have a small holiday party with a few locals and the staff. We need to get the deck fixed; one of these days we’ll lose a SF luminary because of a loose board if we don’t, so it’s on the agenda. Barring catastrophe, however, we’ll have some photos next month of the revelry.

  THIS ISSUE, NEXT ISSUE

This issue has Forthcoming Books through September 2013 with 1,750 US titles and 1,000 UK titles listed. There is no dearth of new titles here.

We’ve once again wrapped the World Fantasy Awards write-up with the con report. It was a long banquet with a short ceremony, but that meant better conversation at the table and less time listening to speeches, which is a boon. I managed to tweet all the winners as they were announced thanks to David Gallaher’s efforts to get me onto the wifi in the banquet hall.

The interviews with Elizabeth Bear and Ted Kosmatka both ended up shorter than they seemed while we were talking – funny how that happens – and next month we’re looking at Daniel Abraham & Ty Franck, AKA James S.A. Corey, and Delia Sherman. We jokingly say around here that the January issue is a light one, but the fact of the matter is that the February issue takes several months to do, so we’ll be working on January and February at the same time.
