Mortal Eclipse Page 37

by David Brookover

“I hate my sister, and I wanted her to watch me enjoying her man,” she laughed.

  “She’s dead,” Nick snapped.

“To you maybe, but not to me.”

  “That doesn’t make any sense.”

“It doesn’t really matter. If I can’t have you, you might as well be dead.” Ariel pulled the Duneden Dirk from her winter coat pocket.

“Hey, wait, what are you going to do with that?”

  “Why kill you, of course.”

  “But the Dirk?”

“I’m not taking any chances. You’re related to Danforth, remember?”

Nick reached for his gun, but his arm was frozen. In a few horrifying seconds, he discovered that his entire body was immobile. Ariel moved closer and raised the dagger.

“This will just kill my sister,” she said lightly, and the dirk descended toward his chest.

A dazzling white light enveloped Ariel before she could strike. She screamed, struggled, and faded into nothingness. Nick blinked and found he could move again. The white light lingered, and when he looked into it, he saw a familiar form.

  “Gabriella!” he yelled.

Her form solidified in the light.

  “Where are you?” he asked.

She smiled. “In my ancestor’s dimension. Nick, I miss you so.”

  “Then come back to me.”

“I will in time, dear Nick. I broke the rules here by conceiving a child with a human and delivering it here in this dimension. I must pay the consequences,” she replied softly.

“But when?” he insisted. “I’m miserable without you.”

“Be patient, darling. In the meantime, you need to go back into the field and do what you do best.”

Nicked lowered his eyes. “I just can’t stop thinking about you, and that’s a dangerous state-of-mind for an agent facing a life or death situation.”

“Don’t waste your special gifts. Use them to protect our world.”

  “What special gifts?”

She giggled. “You’re not as ordinary as you think.”

  “Tell me.”

The light dimmed. “I have to leave now. Just be strong in the knowledge that I’m alive, and I love you. I’ll return to you soon.”

“I love you,” he whispered after her disappearing figure. After staring into the air where she had vanished for several minutes, he reluctantly turned away and headed for the car. Elation dispelled the gloom in his mind and heart. Gabriella was alive! Now maybe he could finally get some sleep. He opened the car door and paused before entering.

  One unresolved issue badgered him.

  What special gifts?
