  He smiled in the darkness.

  ‘The perfect couple, then. Just imagine that.’

  ‘The perfect family,’ she corrected.

  ‘Almost.’

  ‘Almost?’ she said, stiffening, a note of concern in her voice.

  ‘Mmm. We’ve got another one point four babies to work on yet.’

  She relaxed again, her breath teasing his skin as she laughed. ‘Now there’s a thought.’ He felt her fingers walking on his chest, idly teasing, migrating south with casual purpose. ‘I saw the doctor today.’

  He lassooed her hand before it went any further. ‘And?’ he asked in a slightly strangled voice.

  ‘And she gave me the all clear. Said everything was fine. So, if you’re not too tired…’

  There was a wail from the nursery, and Laurie rolled onto her back and laughed in despair. ‘Still think you’re the luckiest man alive?’ she asked, and he nodded.

  ‘Absolutely,’ he replied. ‘Oh, yes. Absolutely. Just do me a favour.’

  ‘Yes?’

  ‘Wait for me.’

  ‘Forever,’ she said, and he knew she meant it.

  He bent and kissed her. ‘I’ll hold you to that,’ he promised softly, and kissed her again.

  And again.
