Though I had a million things I wanted to say, I came up with, “What about my house?”
Asher grinned as if he knew that was the least of my concerns. “I’ll finish it up while you’re away.”
“So, you’re actually a contractor?”
“He’s a contractor of all sorts,” Ezra interrupted, pulling my shoulder. “Come on, we must go now.”
I stared at Asher, knowing it was far from over between us. The bond had been made, even in the short time we had known each other; there was something deeper at play, something I knew neither of us could remotely ignore. Besides, I still needed to lose my damn virginity, and Asher was the only candidate applying for the job.
Before Ezra glimmered us out, I ran back over to Asher and whispered in his ear, “We’ll figure this out when I’m back.” Pulling away, I added, “And go ahead and paint the master bedroom in that eggshell white you were so adamant about.”
A brilliant glitter of light twinkled in Asher’s blue eyes as he blinked out of my living room.
“You okay?” Ezra asked.
I wiped away a few tears and nodded. “Sure. I guess dying a virgin isn’t the worst thing.”
Ezra chuckled and held my left arm, glimmering us out.
In a flash, we were in the Glimmer dimension. Oh well, I guess I could reframe my stay as a retreat. It wouldn’t be so bad; I could sit by a periwinkle pond, sipping effervescent energy drinks while angels peeled me grapes as my right hand regenerated. I could train with that little surfer dude, Julian. We’d get stronger and learn how to make better use of the Armor and its powers. My questions—at least the ones regarding my job as a Protector of Light—would be answered. And of course while we were getting stronger, predicting Cagliostro’s next steps, and tracking the location of the other Scroll, I’d be plotting my return. The Darkness might’ve had a hand up on me in that moment, but it wasn’t over. Not even close to being over.
