“Now during this whole fight everyone in the dinner just backed up to get out of the way. That is until they heard Dad declare what was fixing to happen. They all turned and ran for the door. Even Danny and Mary stopped and came over to us. That was when the mountain stood up again and grabbed Daddy Mike and I think pissed him off. Daddy Mike turned around and broke the guys knee then drove his elbow into his jaw breaking it,” Jake said and started giggling.
Getting it under control, he started again, “Well while Daddy Mike is letting the mountain know he is tired of playing and Dad was fixing to carry out his threat, a cop fights the crowd that is going out to get in. He must have only seen dad because he ran right at him. Now we all yelled for Dad and that was when the cop grabbed his shoulder. Dad spun around so fast he caught the cop in the side of the head with a punch, the cop never stood a chance. That cop dropped like someone threw a switch. Dad just looked down at the cop then at Daddy Mike. Dad turned to us and said ‘Run’. We all took off running at the same time heading to the Tahoe which was parked on the other side of the lot. When we got there, we all climbed in followed by Dad. When we didn’t see Daddy Mike get in, we turned around to see him slashing the tires of the cop car and the four motorcycles parked outside. Dad yelled out for him to move it as he started the Tahoe up and drove over to him. When we pulled out, it was with several other vehicles and we could see flashing lights heading to the diner behind us.”
“Dad turned around and told everyone to change clothes and do it fast. Everyone was completely changed in fifteen minutes; even Dad and Daddy Mike had changed. Then several miles down the road Dad stopped at a parts store and bought some wide pin stripping and decals. We pulled over outside of town and put them on the Tahoe and stayed on the back roads until we got out of Texas,” Jake finished.
Debbie laughed looking at Bruce, “I always wondered why you put that stripping on my Tahoe.”
Nancy looked back and forth from Bruce and Mike taking several long drinks. “Well y’all taught our kids how to become fugitives and evade the law,” Nancy finally said laughing.
“Were y’all ever stopped?” Angela asked wiping tears from her eyes.
“Yeah in Arizona but we were let go because we didn’t match the description,” Bruce told her.
Angela laughed shaking her head, “Well like I have said life in this family is never dull.”
“You have no idea,” Debbie said emptying her glass and pouring another one. When she sat the bottle down Angela grabbed it turned it up taking a long drink out of the bottle. When she lowered the bottle everyone was just looking at her.
“What?” she asked and no one responded. Angela turned to Stephanie handing her the bottle, “Take a hit.” Angela told her. Stephanie just looked at the bottle then at Angela.
“I want some juice first,” Stephanie told her.
Angela shook her head, “Don’t be a pussy. Just take three long chugs. We have to show them we are just as insane as they are,” Angela advised her.
Reluctantly, Stephanie took the bottle and turned it up taking three long drinks of straight vodka. Taking the bottle away from her mouth, Stephanie gasped for air as her stomach told her, it did not like that. “Shit I think my balls just fell off,” Stephanie declared in a dry raspy voice blinking her watery eyes as the table erupted in laughter.
When the laughter died down, Jake looked at Bruce saying, “Dad I know we will get married with the family rings but I want to go and get some for us to wear afterwards.”
Bruce looked at Jake, “Yeah y’all are getting married with the family rings and that does mean all of you.” Bruce said looking at Mindy and David both smiling saying yes sir.
Bruce turned back to Jake asking, “When has daddy not taken care of business?” Bruce stood up and felt the earth move under his feet. He staggered out to the kitchen to the bedroom and headed to the closet. Heading down the stairs he fell down the last four and jumped to his feet. “I meant to do that,” Bruce said.
Sitting back down, Bruce laid out three boxes trying to read the names on the boxes but the words wouldn’t stay still. “Buffy, come here and read please. The words won’t be still,” Bruce implored.
Pointing at the boxes, Buffy said, “Danny/Matt, David/Mindy and Jake/Mary.”
“Your mom knew your ring size’s and thank Mike for not shooting me when I snuck off to get them at the base. I knew you wanted to get married so I grabbed them in case it was summer when you did. That way I would not have to fight a million evil smurfs to get you some rings but I would have,” Bruce said as he slid the boxes to the kids. Then Bruce added, “Don’t forget to thank Nancy for calming Mike down wearing the red high heels.” Nancy laid her head on the table.
“Now ladies take the girls upstairs to have the bachelorette party, the bachelor party is down here. I’m not going back up those stairs I swear they move,” Bruce said.
“I can’t see my feet and you want me to walk up stairs?” Debbie asked.
Danny spoke up, “Let’s have both here.”
Bruce looked at Debbie asking, “You can do that?”
Jake replied, “We can do whatever we want.”
“Get some juice, none of you can drink this straight,” Bruce said.
“I can,” Steve said proudly grabbing the bottle turning it up. He was the first to pass out so he woke up wearing make-up and red glossy fingernail polish on his finger nails. The young couples made it until noon. Bruce went down an hour later, followed by Nancy, Debbie, Angela, Stephanie and Mike made it the longest.
Through the whole morning Buffy had only drank juice as she sat watching, laughing and listening to her family. She laughed so hard at them for so long her stomach muscles hurt badly. Watching her family, Buffy realized how much she loved them. When everyone had moved to the living room, Buffy followed. As everyone passed out, some on the furniture the rest on the floor, Buffy just watched and laughed with them. After Daddy Mike fell asleep and quit telling her stories Buffy got off the couch and walked over to Mama and Daddy on the floor, lying down between them. Even though it was only late afternoon, Buffy curled up between them and went to sleep with them. Buffy smiled as she drifted off to sleep remembering what Daddy said, ‘Family first’. She had a family.
