Infection Z (Book 2) Page 20

by Casey, Ryan

Sarah swallowed a lump in her throat. She wiped her eyes and cleared her throat. “Why now more than anything?”

Hayden stared at the dandelion shoot. He saw Clarice’s smiling face. He saw her with Mum and Dad and Annabelle. He saw them all looking down on him, all smiling and laughing, all so proud of their boy for making it so far.

And then he looked up at the grounds. He looked up at the walls, at the hangars. Some of this place burned, sure, but nothing that couldn’t be repaired, nothing that couldn’t be patched up and maintained.

Then he saw the people. The six people Sarah and he had saved. Should’ve been seven—should’ve been more than that—but they’d saved these six from the jaws of death and they’d given them another chance. They’d given them another day.

  They’d given them hope.

“We need it now more than anything because we’re about to start.”

  Sarah’s eyes narrowed. “Start what?”

Hayden turned away from the daffodil and smiled.

  “Living again.”
