“How many of them do you think we’re up against?”
“I wasn’t exactly keeping count, but I saw four on one boat and five on the other. That doesn’t account for anybody not on deck, and of course there’s the captain of each boat.”
“Well I took out three and we got one here…well Wanaki got one. I guess that leaves at least five—assuming they all came on shore.”
“A few probably stayed with the boats.”
She agreed—that would be the logical thing to do. At least help was on the way. They just needed to hang on and survive until that time. The authorities would no doubt get the remaining pirates on the boats, but the ones that had pursued them on foot would be their responsibility.
She wasn’t going to do the cliché thing and declare her love for Andrew. She intended to make it out alive and if Andrew knew what was best for him, he’d better have the same intentions. “Don’t forget your promise,” she said.
He looked back at her, winked and said, “I don’t intend to.” His facial expression suddenly turned serious. She wondered where his thoughts had gone to.
“Get your riffle ready.” He crouched down, grabbing her wrist and bringing her down with him.
It wasn’t until she followed his gaze that she realized the reason for alarm.
“We can’t start shooting or we’ll alarm them. I’ll sneak around back, you cover me.”
Lindy brandished her rifle. “I don’t think that’s an option,” she nodded toward the men. They had changed directions and now they were headed their way.
“They must have heard us.”
“At least they’re not headed toward the village anymore.” It wasn’t as if she was an eternal optimist, but they had done exactly what they set out to do.
“Shoot to wound if you can.”
“Do you really think wounding us is their primary concern?” If he thought he was shielding her from post traumatic stress he didn’t need to. “I’ll go for a debilitating wound or I’ll aim to kill.”
“Agreed.” He nodded before moving away from her. She knew he planned to sneak around them and get a better vantage point. Her heart raced with anticipation. The hunt was going to end here. The only question was who would be victorious.
Lindy aimed at the men approaching her direction. She noticed one man stop and aim at Andrew. She didn’t hesitate before pulling the trigger. Her actions saved Andrew and increased her own danger the remaining men opened fire in her direction. She hugged the ground as bullets shot past her, clipping stalks of grass and piercing surrounding trees. This was it. She thought she was going to die, but she didn’t. The gunfire eased in her direction enough for her to get one more shot off.
“Andrew!”
“Over here!” He stood and she could see he was fine. She did a self check to make sure she hadn’t been hit again.
“Well, we survived.”
“That we did.” He approached her rapidly and pulled her into his arms.
“I’m glad you’re okay,” she whispered against his ear.
“I love you, Lindy.”
Epilogue
“Dad, I handled myself perfectly. You can’t use an incident that happened six months ago against me.”
“Stubborn,” Captain Morgan mumbled. “Andrew would you talk some sense into your finance.”
Andrew laughed. “She’s your daughter Captain. If you can’t change her mind I don’t think I can either.”
Lindy smiled, “smart choice, Andrew.”
“Must you insist—”
“Dad,” she warned.
“Fine,” he signed the new contract without the restrictions of Lindy being able to captain. “Which boat do you want?”
She took the contract from him and placed it in her bag. “Neither.”
Both men looked at her as if she had grown a second head.
“I just wanted to know you believed in me. Your signing the contract means you do and that’s all I wanted—written proof.”
Captain Morgan laughed. “I should have known—you’re too much like me not to be this sneaky.”
Lindy laughed. “Well that’s the best compliment I’ve ever had.” She felt complete—the man she loved and the confidence of her father. She couldn’t ask for more.
