Chapter 1
ABBY
It’s been a while since I’ve been out for drinks. I stood in front of my walk-in closet with my hands on my hips and realized that my wardrobe sorely reflected that. I’m an attorney and most of what I own is either business classy or business casual. I have formal wear for those events my father ropes me into and I have the light cotton sundresses I wear to lunch at the club with Mom. I have my yoga clothes and my jeans and t-shirts, but as far as clubbing clothes. It’s just not happening. I picked up my phone and text my best friend, Joze.
“I’ve got nothing to wear.”
Thirty seconds passed and my phone buzzed.
“You’re an attorney with Pessen, Frankfurt, & Kessler; one of the largest and richest firms in the city. Not only that but your father is a famous heart surgeon who still spoils you rotten at twenty-seven. Not having anything to wear is not an acceptable excuse for pulling out on our night out. AGAIN!”
I rolled my eyes. My father does not spoil me rotten. He would like to, but I’ve cut him off. I keep on showing him my paychecks, assuring him I didn’t need the hefty allowance he insisted on putting in my account every month but he made the deposit anyway. That’s my father for you. Arrogant and stubborn.
Truth be told, our relationship was strained. His trying to buy me didn’t improve matters. I can’t be bought—certainly not with blood money.
“It’s five o’clock. I don’t have time to go out and buy anything.”
“I’ll be there in an hour with choices.”
Sometimes she exasperated me, but I guess I have to give her points for sticking with me all this time. I can be hard headed and way too serious to say the least.
Joze, short for Josephine, is just the opposite. She’s the most free-spirit I’ve ever known. We met in college and it was an instant ‘opposites attract’ situation. She was raised by hippie parents who spent their lives trying to save the planet, the homeless, and animals tested in laboratories. If it needed saving, they were the guys to call.
We met at law school. I’d intended on being a malpractice attorney while she’d wanted to be the next Erin Brockovich. I ended up going into corporate law instead but Joze stuck to her path and was currently working on a case in Upstate New York involving contaminated water—she really was following in Erin’s footsteps.
Joze had a way of getting me to relax and I liked to believe my contribution to her was to help her realize life couldn’t always be just fun and games. We were like scales, always trying to balance each other out, and usually succeeding.
“Nothing too short…or too low cut.” I told her, knowing exactly what she’d bring over if I didn’t set her some limits. Our taste in clothes couldn’t be more opposite either.
Her response to that text was a series of six emojis rolling their eyes. I laughed and went out to the kitchen to fix something to eat. I’d skipped lunch because I was helping Chase, my boss, prepare a new case he was working on. I looked through the refrigerator and cabinets and quickly decided I needed to go shopping. After making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, I sat down at the table and opened my laptop.
Chase Kessler was the youngest partner at the firm and the one who hired me right out of law school. He said he was impressed with not only my grades but my motivation to not just be a good attorney, but a great one. I’ve worked for the firm for three years now and Chase lets me work all of his big cases with him. He’s even talking about letting me litigate the next one we land that actually ends up in court. It said a lot about the caliber of our attorneys that we seldom went to court on a case. Most of them were settled in office.
Still, as a newbie it could be frustrating. Courtroom experience was a mega boon on my resume, but our firm was so damn good at what it did, cases rarely went that far.
The most recent case I was on seemed to be more about detective work than the law. The guy who retained Chase was an old college friend, a billionaire who made his money by making smart investments on Wall Street.
Chase said the guy was brilliant so when I read the notes on the case and found out a woman he’d met in a sex club was blackmailing him, I had to wonder what he looked like. I mean, if a guy is not only filthy rich but practically a genius to boot, a woman had to wonder what he was doing in a sex club in the first place?
Our assignment was to dig up some dirt on this woman that the billionaire could in turn use against her. I had a few moral issues with the whole thing but legally we weren’t crossing any lines so I kept my mouth shut.
I typed in my password and resumed the search I was doing before I left the office earlier. I typed in “News Articles/Sapphire/Sex Clubs/BDSM and waited to be overloaded by smut.
I’ve lived in New York my entire life, but as I scrolled through page after page of advertisements and articles about fetish clubs, BDSM clubs, gay clubs, lesbian clubs and even bestiality clubs, for fuck’s sake, I couldn’t help being shocked. It’s not that I’m a prude. I like sex as much as the next guy…or girl. But the idea of going to a place where you did things with complete strangers didn’t appeal to me in the least.
I haven’t read so much about sex in a while. The sheer act of reading about it was, embarrassingly enough, making me horny. Although that could have been because it had been too long since I had sex. The last time didn’t really count either because it was with Ted.
Ted is a paralegal who works at the firm. I make it a point not to date anyone I work with. Chase Kessler is hot as hell and I turned him down right off the bat. But Ted had caught me at one of my lowest points and I’m sad to say he took advantage of it. In Ted’s defense, it’s probably the only way he ever gets any. I was at the Christmas party the partners throw at the end of November every year for their employees and I’d drunk way too much champagne. I was having fun, or I thought I was until that stupid song came on.
Damn that Taylor Swift.
I was seventeen when she released “Our Song.” The first time I heard it I thought it was the most perfect song ever to describe my relationship with Will.
My high school sweetheart, I’d been so in love with him, utterly head over heels that I had planned my entire future around him…until he just up and left one
day and left my heart shattered into a million pieces. I don’t know if it was the song or way too much alcohol or the fact I always seemed to get depressed around the holidays, but dull old Ted seemed like a good idea at the time.
The sex was horrible and so fast I almost missed it. When I finally got Ted out the door the alcohol hit my stomach, or maybe it was just the idea that I’d had sex with Ted. Either way I spent the rest of the night on my knees worshiping the porcelain God in my bathroom. Not my finest moment.
With a sigh I tried to push all memories of Will and Ted out of my head. I scrolled through all the old news postings about sex clubs in the greater New York area and just when I was about to give up, I found one that sounded interesting. It was an article in the Times and the headline read: Councilman Bradbury Sapphire Club Sex Tapes leaked on Tumblr.
The article was three years old and something about the name rang familiar to me. As I read through the editorial, I realized it sounded familiar because it had been all over the news when it happened.
The councilman was pushing sixty and he had three grown children and a wife. He drove downtown one day in the middle of rush hour and jumped off one of the tallest skyscrapers. He landed on a Mazda Miata. I’m not sure why that’s important. It did get me to thinking that if that was how I chose to go, I would aim for something a little classier. It would just sound better in print to say I landed on a Lexus or a BMW.
Anyway, as the circling sharks had a tendency of doing, the media ate the story up and there were all kinds of rumors he was having an affair, spending his family fortune on prostitutes and maybe even doing drugs. I don’t remember hearing how it all turned out but that would have been my first year with the firm—I’d been too focused on learning the ropes at that time to concentrate on much else.
The article I was reading now said that after the councilman died, it was discovered he had been dipping into funds that were set aside for the City Parks Department for years. He’d embezzled over ninety-thousand dollars. His wife and children tried to sue the city for slander and refused to pay the ninety-thousand back from his estate. They insisted he didn’t need the money, so why would he steal it? Rumors began circulating that he’d used the money on prostitutes and drugs and he’d stolen it to keep his wife from finding out. The city, in turn, counter-sued and finally an out of court settlement was reached and the terms of it were sealed.
To me, as an attorney, that meant the family discovered they had no chance of winning and accepted a deal that meant they probably had to pay a lot less than the original ninety grand.
The article went on to say that a year after Councilman Bradbury died someone released a video to Tumblr. It reportedly showed the Councilman in a “compromising” position at a sex club in the east village called “Sapphire.”
That was what really caught my attention in the headline. It was the same club Chase’s client had been at when he’d been videotaped doing things he didn’t want anyone to find out about. There was a link to Tumblr where the video could be viewed with a disclaimer about “disturbing” content. When I clicked on it I was taken to a page that stated: This video has been removed per request of the owner. If you think you have reached this page in error…etc….
I picked up my phone and called Chase.
“Shouldn’t you be getting ready to go out?” Joze had enlisted Chase’s help in harassing me until I finally gave in and agreed to go with them to a new club tonight.
Chase and Joze have a really odd relationship. I introduced them three years ago and they started dating. That didn’t work out, something had happened this past year, but they still get together about once a month and have wild sex that Joze insists on giving me blow by blow accounts of. Then I have to go to work with Chase the next day and try not to imagine what a “wizard” he is with his tongue every time I look at him.
“I’m waiting for Joze to bring me something to wear.”
He laughed. “Hopefully she’ll bring you that slutty black leather skirt. I love when she wears that while I’m…”
“Stop right there! I don’t want to hear it. Listen, I’m calling because I found something.”
“You’re at home and you’re still working? As your boss and a partner in the firm, I’m impressed. As your friend, I feel obligated to tell you this is why you don’t have a boyfriend.”
“Don’t worry about my love life.”
“Or lack thereof…”
“Would you like to hear what I found?” I ignored and tried not to be pissed at the fact he was laughing at me.
“I’d love to. Anything to make this case go away,” he said. After I told him about the article and the video, he congratulated me, “Good work. Now we have to figure out how to get our hands on that video.”
“I wonder if the family has a copy of it.”
He clicked his tongue. “I don’t know Abby, if it was your father would you keep something like that?”
“Heck no! But they’re probably the ones who had the video pulled. Maybe their attorneys have a copy.”
“I doubt it. Even if a firm had the copy, there’s no reason for them to share it with us. But…they might just know the name of whoever he appeared with in the video. They might not mind sharing that.”
“Should I call them and set up a meeting?”
“Yes, but not on Friday night. Put on whatever slutty outfit Joze brings you and let’s go out there and get you laid! That’s an order from your boss.”
I rolled my eyes and sighed. I often wonder if other people have bosses who worry about their sex lives…or as Chase said, lack thereof. I can’t be the only unlucky one. “Okay then, I better go get slutty.”
He laughed again and said, “Whoot! Whoot! Can’t wait to see that.”
I hung up and shook my head just as the doorbell rang. Joze. Let the games begin.
Chapter 2
WILL
“Listen to me, Will…I know Chase is good, but I also know if this woman decides to go public before he can find something in her past to embarrass or discredit her, your reputation in this city could be ruined. I understand your resolve not to give in to her demands, but your pride may be all you have left once she finishes with you if you don’t.”
Geo was pacing my office like a panther. Some kind of exotic cat was what I thought of almost every time I looked at my friend. He’s Italian and his skin is a dark olive color. His hair is jet black and his eyes, ice blue. It was quite the contrast and it made him the object of female attention nearly everywhere he went. But then, when Chase, Geo, and I were out partying, none of us were ever short of that.
“I’m not paying her, Geo. If I do that I may as well fold up this company right now. Do you honestly think if I give her what she wants she’ll just disappear? Once she realizes I’m weak enough to give in to her demands, she’ll be back over and over. Who knows what she’ll want next?”
Geo dragged a hand through his thick hair and pulled at the ends. He’s usually a pretty laid-back and even-tempered guy, but lately he seemed to be almost crawling out of his skin every time I saw him. I haven’t been a very good friend lately. I was so immersed in what this woman wanted to do to me and how I could stop her that I had barely been aware of what was happening around me.
“You’re taking a huge risk,” he said.
“Risks are how I live my life,” I told him, meaning every word. I’d made a fortune by taking risks and I’d also come to crave them in my everyday life, so much so that anything ordinary barely interested me any longer. That unusual apathy disturbed me more than the blackmail threat Geo was currently wearing the floor out over.
“Sometimes I worry that risks will be how you end it.” Geovanni Marino had been one of my best friends since college. He’s not usually a worrier. He’s an attorney like Chase and he already works for me, but when this woman started blackmailing me I’d gone to Chase first simply because he has an entire firm to work on this and I want it to disappear. I wondered if that was what was both
ering Geo now. Is he hurt because I went to Chase first?
“Everything’s calculated, Geo. Usually the odds are in my favor otherwise I don’t play the hand. You know that. It’s not like you to worry about shit like this. Are you okay?”
His pupils seemed dilated when he looked at me. If this was anyone but Geo I might worry about drugs…but Geo’s as straight as an arrow; he rarely even drinks. “I’m fine,” was all he said as he ran his hands through his hair again.
“You don’t look fine.”
“I’m just worried about you.”
“Well, you don’t have to. Chase is going to take care of it; have faith. Speaking of Chase, he invited me to meet him and a couple of friends for a drink tonight. Are you interested?” Before he answered me the text tone on his phone went off. He pulled it out and looked at it and his pupils seemed to grow wider.
“Nah, I better not. I promised Dad I’d come by…” Geo’s father was once a soldier in the Italian Mafia. When Geo was in high school, his dad got hit by a car and is now a paraplegic. Geo says it saved both of them. His father got out of the mob and Geo wasn’t expected to be one of their attorneys simply by association.
“How is your dad?” In spite of his history, or maybe even because of it, I liked Geo’s father. The poor man has no control over his body but his mind is still completely intact. He likes to tell stories from when he was “busting heads” on the streets of New York. I think some of it might be embellished…a lot, but they were fun to listen to.
“He’s okay. Tell Chase I said hello and I’ll see you Monday.” He turned to leave and when he got to the door I said, “Geo, you would tell me if there was something you needed help with, right?”
I’m not sure but I think there was maybe a touch of sarcasm in his voice as he retorted, “Sure, just like you’d tell me.”
“Geo, man…” But he was gone. Shit. I’d have to make a point of going by to see him this weekend and trying to explain why I asked for Chase’s help and not his. I didn’t want to lose one of my best friends.
