The Mailbox Page 24

by Marybeth Whalen

  19. Forgiveness and second chances are big themes in this story. The saying goes that unforgiveness is like eating poison while waiting for the other person to die. To whom do you need to ask forgiveness and a second chance? To whom do you need to offer your forgiveness?

  20. Do you know who the Kindred Spirit is whom we see in the beginning and ending of the book? At what point in the story did you figure out her identity?

  Visiting the Mailbox

“Slightly hidden among the dunes on Bird Island is a plain rural mailbox, containing an assortment of notebooks, pens, and pencils. The outside of the mailbox is marked ‘Kindred Spirit.’ Visitors use the notebooks to record inconsequential statements, special thoughts, and sometimes private prayers. Visitors have the opportunity to make public statements in complete anonymity.” (Source: Wikipedia, “‘Kindred Spirit’ Mailbox,” 1/27/10)

  Finding the mailbox:

If you decide to visit the mailbox, you must first start at Sunset Beach and head toward Bird Island, a nature preserve of pure, undeveloped coastline kept by the state of North Carolina. The mailbox is on your right, tucked into the dunes before you get to the jetty of rocks that jut out into the ocean. If you get to the old shipwreck on the beach, you’ve gone too far. And if you have trouble finding your way, just ask one of the nice people you see walking along the beach. They’re sure to help you get where you’re going.
