The Brass Ring Page 4

CC prepared her hot chocolate while cradling her niece carefully in her arms. The sun was just beginning to rise gently kissing the morning sky. CC inhaled the scent of her niece. "Why is it you smell so good? Huh?" She asked the little bundle in her arms. This was their time together. CC sighed deeply as she settled down on the couch in the living room. "You know your Momma gave me a hard time this morning." CC explained as Emma kicked her legs. "Don't tell her this but this time I think she might be right."

CC sipped her hot chocolate careful to keep it out of Emma's inquiring grasp. "Life is funny, Emma. A long time ago I met the most beautiful woman in the world. Everything was perfect until . . ." CC grimaced slightly as Emma tugged on her hair and then gently removed her raven tresses from Emma's small fist. "I take it you want to hear the story?" She cooed towards little Emma. "Man the guys on the force would drop dead if they could see me now." But she told little Emma everything during their morning ritual. Emma after all was a very good listener.

She shifted and sank into the sofa resting her niece on her chest as she began to tell her story. She had left Jamie's dorm room and went home happier than she had ever been in her life. The only thoughts she had were of the night before and the night to come. She would see Jamie that night and tell her again just how deeply in love with her she was. Later that day everything changed. It was a simple traffic stop. At least it should have been. Her partner called in the plates of the aging Honda. It was nothing more than a busted taillight. She should have been more careful. CC never saw the gun. You know the dangers when you join the force but somehow you never think it will happen to you.

CC never expected to find herself lying in the middle of Dunster Street bleeding just because of a busted taillight. The first shot rang out and ripped into her stomach. She had been stunned as the burning blazed through her abdomen. Somehow whether from reflex, training or out and out fear she managed to draw her own weapon and fire. She hit her target but not before a second bullet ripped into her body. For weeks she drifted in and out of consciousness unaware of her surroundings. Her only cognizant thoughts were of Jamie.

By the time her mind could fully focus on where she was more weeks had passed. She awoke to find her kid sister sleeping in a chair. The awkward teenager had run away to be by her sister's side. It had taken the department weeks to track down her mother. Not surprisingly to CC her mother made no effort to see her. When Stevie found out she hitch hiked her way up from Providence to Boylston. The two had always been there for one another.

CC had been shocked by the amount of time she had lost. Her first thoughts turned to Jamie. Stevie told her that she had called out for her. But everyone with the exception of Stevie assumed that James was her boyfriend. "I have to call her." CC insisted.

"She's gone." Stevie reluctantly admitted to her sister. "I tried to call her but by the time I got here she was already gone. The dorms are empty now. Do you know how to get in touch with her parents? I assume she went home for the summer." Stevie offered hopefully only to be greeted by CC shaking her head in the negative as the tears began to fall.

CC could feel her heart breaking at the news. "Why?" Was all she could say. It didn't take her long to fit the missing pieces together. The punk that had shot her was an FBI informant. CC was never given the full details of what this guy was working on or why he panicked when she pulled him over. She had her suspicious but was never told anything. The entire incident as the FBI put it was unfortunate and swept under the rug. There had been no mention of it in the press. It had been more than a few weeks it had been almost two months since she found herself lying in the middle of Dunster Street. Jamie had no idea what had happened. All she knew is CC had left her room after a night of passion with the words, "I'll call you." This was bad. She had to find Jamie and explain what happened.

It was later in the fall of that year when CC finally returned to duty. It hadn't been hard for her to convince a judge that her kid sister would be better off in her care. Life with their mother and Stevie’s father was a living hell. Stevie's father was a sick bastard and there was no way she could continue to let her stay there. CC hadn't been welcomed in her Mother's home since she came out of the closet. Not that she had ever received a warm reception prior to that. Thanks mostly to CC; Albert Beaumont had never succeeded in his twisted attempts to get his hands on his stepdaughter or daughter. CC watched over her teenaged sister and regained her strength both physically and mentally.

Her sister started school and even though she felt betrayed by the department CC returned to work. Now it was time to find Jamie and tell her what happened. It wasn't very hard to track down the med student. Feeling the need to do this face to face, CC flew down to DC and rented a car. She felt nervous as she parked across the street from the dormitory. But she never doubted that once Jamie knew the truth they could start over again. Nothing could have prepared her for what happened next.

She had just stepped out of the car and was preparing to cross the street when another car pulled up. Jamie stepped out. CC's heart skipped a beat at the sight of her lover as the early morning sun caressed her golden locks. Of course if CC had been thinking clearly she would have wondered why Jamie was just coming home at this hour. Or perhaps she would have noticed the driver of the car, a tall redhead stepping out and walking over to Jamie.

CC felt as if she had been shot once again as she watched in horror as the two women embraced one another. She was certain that her heart died that day as she watched her lover sticking her tongue into another woman's mouth. The tears welled up in her eyes, as she felt sick. She threw open the car door and climbed inside hiding from the sight of betrayal. She was crying so hard that she never noticed the other woman's departure. For a brief moment she looked up and caught a curious look from Jamie. Never certain if Jamie had seen her she drove off and never looked back.

"Well that's the whole story, Peanut." CC whispered to her niece. Emma simply blew bubbles in response. "You are such a good listener. I guess I never told Jamie the truth because she had replaced me so easily. Never fall in love, Emma it's just not worth it. Of course you may never get the chance to date. Between your parents and me I don't think any gentleman caller would stand a chance. Of course I think your Dad has your prom gown already designed. I don't know why I'm worrying about all of this. It's not like Jamie and I would still be together. I mean look at your Mom. She and Katrina were the perfect lesbian couple and look what happened."

"Katrina decided to have an early midlife crisis." Stevie's voice interrupted her. "What are you telling my daughter?"

  "Nothing." CC feigned innocence.

"Uh huh." Stevie chuckled as she reached out for Emma.

  "No." CC whined.

"She needs to be fed." Stevie pointed out. "So unless you can do that . . ."

"Oh." CC blushed as she reluctantly handed Emma over to her Mother.

"Some big stuff cop you are." Stevie chuckled as she returned to her bedroom and sat down in the rocking chair. Opening her blouse she began to feed her daughter.

"Hey!" CC pouted. "Does that hurt?"

"Hmm." Stevie winced slightly. "Sometimes. Now what is this about a prom dress?"

"I was just telling the little peanut that her Daddy probably has already designed one for her." CC chuckled.

"Probably." Stevie said with a smile. "But what's the point of having a father who's a big drag queen if he won't design clothes for you? Nobody does Liza better than your Daddy. Do they sweetie?" Stevie smiled down at her daughter. "Do you know what you are going to do yet?"

  "About?" CC asked suspiciously.

  "James." Stevie answered directly.

"Not a clue." CC sighed in defeat.

  CHAPTER FIVE

JAMIE SHIFTED SLIGHTLY, trying not to disturb her companion. She eased her way out of bed, hoping not to awaken her new friend. Jamie blinked slowly as she focused on the loud decor of the strange apartment. 'What is it they say? I would never choose this wallpaper,' she t
hought as she searched for her missing clothing. "Where are you going?" a voice murmured from the bed.

"Time to go," Jamie answered bluntly as she pulled her jeans on.

"But . . . I thought that maybe," the brunette began in a desperate tone.

"Sorry . . ." Jamie paused as she tried to recall the woman's name, unable to decide if it was Trudy or Tracy. Perhaps it was Stacy. No, it definitely began with a "T". Jamie shook her head, deciding to move on. "I don't do overnight. I told you that." Jamie's tone was gentle and yet unwavering. "It's late. I need to get going," Jamie offered as she pulled on her T-shirt and then covered it with her charcoal sweater. She pulled on her leather car coat and leaned over to kiss the woman goodbye.

"Can I call you?" the brunette inquired hopefully.

"No." Jamie turned away, tucking her underwear into her coat pocket.

"Oh, that's right. You said that too." The brunette sighed heavily. "An honest cad."

"Something like that," Jamie confessed as she fished her car keys out of her pocket. 'Never get attached and never tell them you'll call when you know you won't. You taught me that, CC. '

Jamie found herself sitting in her car outside the brunette's apartment building. Another one night stand. Granted, it wasn't something she did very often. Well, not anymore. Seeing CC at the hospital had not only shaken her, it had reopened a very old wound. After work she made it to the bar by last call and found herself escorting the tall brunette out of the bar before the lights were turned up.

She had hoped that a night of sexual exploration would extinguish her demons. But once again it left her wanting more. Those first few months in med school, Jamie had found herself wandering from one woman to the next until she received a very unorthodox wakeup call.

It was one night when she found herself in a stranger's apartment. They were naked and fooling around on the woman's bed. Much to her surprise, the woman's girlfriend entered the bedroom. Jamie panicked. Surprisingly the woman wasn't angry over Jamie's presence. In fact she was thrilled and decided to join them. Jamie found herself being made love to by two women as they explained to one another just what they should do to Jamie. The experience was wonderful, but at the same time it had unnerved her. She realized that these two women had planned the evening. This wasn't who she was.

From that night on Jamie decided not to be such an easy target. She dated more and started insisting on safe sex. After time had passed, she gave up on meeting the right woman and concentrated on her studies. Although she still went out and occasionally satisfied her carnal desires, for the most part Jamie simply focused on herself and her career. Now here she sat wondering where in the hell she was. 'Getting too old for this, Jamie. You're in a strange town with your underwear in your pocket,' she mentally chastised herself. Finally she started the car and headed off towards what she hoped was a main road that would lead her back to the highway.

Two hours later she found herself completely lost and her gas tank nearing empty. She pulled over across the street from a park and tried to get her bearings. She looked across the street; her eyes widened as she noticed the wooden sign - 'Cold Springs Park'. "How in the hell did I end up here?" she mumbled absently.

Without remembering how or why, Jamie found herself walking through the park until she stood in front of the carousel. The antique was still beautiful. The brass plaque was still there, explaining the age of the carousel and the restoration dates. It had been the first and last place CC had taken her. It was the last good time they'd shared, the last date with CC right before she left a shattered naive girl behind. "Fool," Jamie groaned as the tears began to fall.

A noise off in the distance snapped her back to reality. As she turned, she half expected to see CC standing there. Jamie shivered at the thought and then quickly realized that hanging out in the park in the middle of the night was far from safe. She twisted her keys through her fingers as she hurried back to her car. She knew her way back to Boylston from here and hopefully she'd have just enough gas to get home.

  CHAPTER SIX

CC STOOD IN THE shadows and watched as her former lover retreated. She didn't understand why she’d driven out here. But once she spotted Jamie, a silly part of her said it was fate. Not that she was hoping for reconciliation. But Stevie was right. Jamie deserved to hear the truth. Now she only had one problem - how was she going to get the stubborn blonde to listen to her? Just what are the right words for totally abandoning someone? Of course, that wasn't what had actually happened. CC rubbed her throbbing temple and decided to leave. She didn't need to tell Jamie tonight. In fact, what she needed to do was go home and get some sleep.

Later that evening as she was lying in bed trying to sleep, her mind kept spinning. Thoughts of the younger innocent Jamie filled her; she wondered how and when she was going to tell Jamie the truth. Life had been so simple back then. They were young and in love. They gave each other their innocence. Why had she never told Jamie that it had been her first time as well? After seeing Jamie kissing a stranger, CC had never really opened her heart to anyone again.

Many women tried to get through to her. But the stoic policewoman only offered her body and never her true self. Her tossing and turning continued. CC showed up for work the following night completely exhausted.

"Hey, CC," her partner called out. "You look like shit."

  "Thank you," she snapped.

"Ooops." The older man cringed. "At first I thought maybe you got lucky. But from your nasty attitude, I'll assume that you struck out."

"What are you talking about?" CC snarled as she flopped down in her chair. The rickety metal chair squeaked under her weight.

"That Doc last night," he continued, oblivious to the fact that he was treading on shaky ground. "You couldn't take your eyes off her. I can't blame you. She’s a real looker."

"Shut up," CC growled. "We have work to do." CC watched with some degree of amusement as her partner's eyes widened in fear.

CC's night was long and boring. It was quiet. In fact, things had been a little too quiet. Just as she relaxed enough to enjoy the reprieve, all hell broke lose. There had been another shooting. CC grabbed her coat and her partner. As they drove to the scene, she said a silent prayer that she wouldn't end up at the hospital again looking into those angry green eyes.

After they finished taking statements from the witness, who of course hadn't seen or heard a thing, they went to Boylston General. CC braced herself as she stepped through the electronic doors of the emergency room. She flashed her badge at the receptionist and made her way to the nurse’s station.

  "I'm Detective Calloway," she explained.

"Yes, I know." The heavyset woman smiled at her. "Dr. James will be with you just as soon as she can."

CC groaned as she fought back the desire to bang her head on the counter until she lost consciousness.

  CHAPTER SEVEN

JAMIE RUBBED HER eyes tiredly as she allowed the orderlies to escort her newest patient from the room. A nurse had already informed her that the police were waiting. Nothing new since it was a gunshot wound. Jamie braced herself as she said a silent prayer that CC wouldn't be one of the officers waiting to question her. She had already lost enough sleep because of her ex-lover. She stepped out of the curtained area and gritted her teeth as she watched her former lover banging her head on the counter. It would have been comical if it weren’t CC.

"Who am I kidding?" She found herself smiling. "It's damn funny. I’m glad to know I'm not the only one who’s freaking out over our paths crossing again," she said quietly as she approached the detectives. "What the hell. I could use a little fun." She shrugged as she stepped up to the nurse's station.

"If you get blood on the counter, you’ll have to clean it up yourself," Jamie stated dryly. She smirked as the taller woman suddenly halted her movements. She winked at CC's partner who was just standing there looking bewildered. CC raised her head and glared at the doctor. Jamie felt her heart drop. CC looked so tired and defeated. She wa
s about to reach out to her. Stopping herself, she withdrew her hand. "I take it you’re here because of the guy I just sent up to surgery?" she stated in a professional manner.

"Yes," CC responded in the same cold professional tone.

"He'll make it," Jamie answered, not even blinking as she stared down CC's icy gaze. "And before you ask, he didn't say anything. If that's all, I have work to do."

"Fine," CC snapped as she turned away, her movement causing a basket of files to topple over. Jamie suppressed her laughter as the tall brooding detective growled. Jamie just stood there as the flustered woman bent over to pick up the mess. The laughter that was threatening to emerge suddenly died as she found herself leering at CC's backside.

Thankfully, CC and her partner were too busy cleaning up the mess to notice her overt ogling. As they returned the items to the desk, Jamie found herself blushing. CC turned to her, seemingly understanding what she had just done. The taller woman flashed her a cocky grin.

Jamie clenched her jaw and folded her arms across her chest, glaring at CC who seemed far too happy with the turn of events. "I have work to do," Jamie spat out as she turned away. CC's laughter was burning her ears. She didn't turn around until she was certain that they’d left. Turning slightly, she caught sight of CC walking down the hallway. She glimpsed once more at the woman's rear end. She gasped slightly as CC turned and winked at her.

Jamie's head fell onto her chest as she fought back the anger that was building up inside of her. She sighed in defeat, knowing that anger wasn't the only emotion she was feeling. As she felt her nipples straining against her T-shirt, she hated her body for still finding CC attractive.
