This time, it was about education. About furthering minds, exploring human potential.
The Trillionaire Boys’ Club has been talking about redefining education since Gagged — before the Trillionaire Boys’ Club existed. Caspian’s company had its education module, and Aurora wanted to use it for good. Here and there it’s popped up — more recently in TBC book 7: The Founder, with Evan Cohen. Evan wanted to change things, too.
If you followed the series from the beginning (and especially if you read the splinter series The Future of Sex, which follows the consequences of Anthony Ross’s exit at the end of The Guru), you know that the Syndicate has always been looking for something to do with its trillion-dollar asset pool. They want to put that money somewhere and reap an enormous return — to buy enough leverage to “control the world,” more or less. They tried with Ross, and when that fell apart, they had to find something new. Finally, in this final TBC book, they found it.
At Elizabeth’s think tank on the mountain, they’ll foster the most brilliant minds the world has to offer. They’ll get first shot at the best new technologies, inventions, and world-changing ideas. And when you think about it, tapping directly into the veins of human intelligence is just about the best investment any group of billionaires could make.
As the idea that the Syndicate would spend its money on “education and ideas” ripened, I began to see how well it fit this story as a whole. On the surface, it looks like Mateo and Elizabeth want very different things. He wants to build a rock climbing endurance competition, and she wants to build a brain trust. But if you dig further, you’ll see that they want the same thing: to explore the depths of human potential. To test limits. To explore the unexplored, and find the wellsprings within humanity if we can all just get out of our own damn way.
As things move forward, you’ll see a change in Aubrey Parker books. The stories are going to be more robust. Deeper. I want to give you more emotion — more “feels” per story. I know how fast most of my readers read, and there’s a part of me that laments how disposable romance novels can sometimes be when people are reading a few per week. I don’t want my books to be disposable. I want them to stick in your heart and refuse to let go.
That’ll start with my next book, but it’s not even that book that most excites me. It’s an opus sort of title that might take a year or more to be written — something I’m considering to be a cornerstone not just for my books, but for me personally.
Bah. Enough about that. I don’t have enough details to give you yet, and I’ve been called a tease more than once.
