Sun Catcher - Book Two Page 22

Lexi turned to her and smiled. “That sounds good.”

“Or, we could go directly to our hotel and play with this.” Cate patted the leather briefcase at Lexi’s feet. “You still haven’t shown me what it can do.”

Lexi clasped her hand and pulled it onto her lap. “You seem happy.”

“I am,” Cate said. “I think the further away I get from Agent Marquez, the more relaxed I feel.”

Lexi studied her face a moment and then leaned in and kissed her. It was a deep and slow kiss that completely took Cate off guard. “Mmm.” Her eyes darted around the busy waiting area. “What was that for?” she asked when Lexi finally pulled away.

“Just something I wanted to do. I’ll be right back,” Lexi said.

  “Where are you going?”

“I’m going to use the loo.”

“Don’t be too long. I think they’re going to call us soon.”

Lexi gripped her hand and gave it a squeeze. She stood and slung her bag over her shoulder.

Cate watched her walk until she disappeared from view. A few moments later, a woman sat down where Lexi had been. Cate considered telling the woman the seat was taken, but she decided to leave it. She looked back toward the washrooms and heard the last minute call for the flight to London. She glanced at the woman sitting next to her. She looked up from her magazine and smiled briefly back at Cate, then went back to her reading. Cate stood up and stretched her legs. She slid the leather briefcase a little closer to her seat so the woman wouldn’t trip over it. She watched the crew for the Paris flight pass beside her. The woman with the magazine looked up again and smiled.

“Shouldn’t be long now,” she said.

“No,” Cate agreed. She eyed the tags on the woman’s bags. “Where are you coming from?”

“Well ... I was in Morocco this morning,” she laughed. Her accent was a hybrid of English and American. Cate guessed she was in her late sixties. She was nicely dressed with an elegant manner.

“Have you been to Paris before?” Cate asked.

“Many times,” the woman answered and smiled. “Have you?”

“This will be my first,” Cate said.

“Well then … you must be very excited,” said the woman. Her eyes were blue and warm.

“Yes, I am actually,” Cate said. She watched the gate attendants prepare their paperwork behind the counter. She looked back again in the direction that Lexi had gone.

“She’s not coming back, Cate,” the woman said softly.

It took a moment for the words, and the fact that she knew her name, to sink in. Then it was as if the air had been sucked from her body.

The woman rose from her seat, pulled a white envelope from her pocket and handed it to her. “This is for you, dear. I apologize on Lexi’s behalf. This must be very alarming for you.”

Cate looked down at the envelope in her hand. Her name was written on the front in the same blocky letters she remembered from another envelope and another time.

She looked into the woman’s eyes. “Who are you?”

“I’m Elizabeth Duke, Lexi’s grandmother,” she said and offered her hand. “I’m here to take you home.”
