  “Details,” Ben says. “They don’t matter. At least – those aren’t the details that matter. It’s the other details, the ones you missed, the ones you need to be looking for. If you could remember those instead of worrying about names.”

  Now he’s pissing me off. If Danny’s life weren’t hanging in the balance, I’d be sorely tempted to pull the trigger just to shut him up. “What the hell are you talking about, Ben?”

  Ben grins. “If you noticed other details. Important details. Like – the eyes. It’s all in the eyes. Eyes really give you a window on a person, into their soul. That’s what they say. And it’s true. I mean, your most recent hire – now she’s striking. And those eyes of hers, beautiful, big, almost shaped…”

  Recent hire – is he talking about Skyla?

  ‘Yeah, Skyla has nice eyes, what of it?”

  I think of her face. I think of her voice.

  I think of her eyes.

  Beautiful caramel-swirling eyes, eyes you could lose yourself in.

  Eyes like Jaymie’s.

  “No…”

  That’s insane. Skyla and Jaymie – they look nothing alike.

  “You have to be kidding me.”

  “Jaymie’s not here. And I never had her with me. Whatever Skyla was leading you to – believe me, it wasn’t me.

  ‘ My heart plummets once again.

  “So…Skyla is Jaymie?”

  The words sound so surreal on my tongue.

  “Bingo,” Ben grins.
