   About Colin Shindler
   An invitation from the Publisher

Most of the opinions expressed in this book were shaped by conversations with friends from many walks of life – fellow historians, journalists, television executives, agents, football administrators and former players – all of them people who have been as obsessed with the game as I have been for more than sixty years. I have quoted many of them directly and at length because in so many cases what they had to say was interesting and rearranging their words into reported speech could only diminish their impact.
In particular, I would like to place on record my thanks to Jimmy Armfield, Patrick Barclay, David Bernstein, Matt Dickinson, Trevor East, Paul Fox, Brian Glanville, Michael Grade, Peter Hennessy, Jon Holmes, David Kynaston, Gary Lineker, Gary Newbon, Dominic Sandbrook and Bob Willis for their insights and the generous measure of time they spent with me. They are all men whose work I admire tremendously. Jon Holmes gave me bed and breakfast; Gary Lineker shut out the rest of the world for two hours in the Groucho Club, which takes some doing when you’re as in demand as he is. The conclusions drawn from them and any mistakes which might have resulted from those conclusions are entirely mine.
The idea for this book came from my partner Katherine Fisher whose creative input into much of my work I willingly acknowledge. My thanks to Geoff Watts and Stan Hey who both diligently read all the early drafts, to Amanda Ridout, Richard Milbank and everyone at the publishing house Head of Zeus who helped to bring the book into the daylight, and to my agent and friend Luigi Bonomi whose sage advice has sustained and fortified me for nearly twenty years.
