“Who said that I wanted it to help him?” he asked, as he stepped back from her.

“You mean you are sending me with something that will hurt him?” she asked.

  “Kill him,” Blake said.

“Oh… that’s all...? And how do I make it back then?” she asked.

Blake looked at Chloe and back to Mia.

“You don’t, Mia. When he opens the book, the war will begin.”

Mia looked at Bailey and tried to grin, but the happiness left her. She knew that this was probably the last time that she would see him and it broke her heart… but if this meant that he would live… then she would do it… for him and no other.

“Well, this conversation went from bad to worse really fast,” she said.

Blake laughed and placed his hand on her shoulder.

“I would have been happy to of known you; I enjoy your wit.”

“Awesome… well, I enjoy living, so I guess that nobody gets what they want,” she said.

“That is life,” Blake said, as he walked to the door and nodded to the boy who drug Bailey in. “Take care of him, for I have promised to Mia that I would.”

“Oh thanks… I appreciate that,” Mia said, as she looked at Blake and he walked out of the room.

Chloe stood there and stared at her.

“I don’t like any of you,” Mia said, as she sat down on the bed.

The boy started to pick Bailey up, and Mia stood back up and looked at him.

“Do you think that I could possibly have a moment...? I mean, I won’t see him again, and he did like hump on me,” Mia said.

The boy looked at Chloe, and she shrugged her shoulders.

She looked back at Mia and crossed her arms on her chest.

“You have five minutes, and then you get dressed.”

“Oh thanks,” Mia said, as she sat down next to Bailey and touched his hair.

“Whatever,” Chloe said, as she backed up to the door and stepped out, staring back in as she closed it shut.

Mia looked up at the boy, who stood there all stiff.

  “Do you mind?” Mia asked.

The boy sighed and stepped to the door.

“If Blake gets angry, it is all on you,” he muttered.

“Oh okay… well since I am the chosen one, to carry the death book, I would guess that you will be spared his wrath.”

The boy frowned at her, as he opened the door and stepped out too.

Mia sighed and looked down at Bailey.

“You stupid ass, look what you did.”

Bailey muttered something, and Mia leaned over him.

  “What?” she whispered.

“I love you, Mia,” he whispered.

Mia raised her eyebrows and stood up quickly.

“Oh hell no… no, no, no,” she said, as the fact that she now knew that Bailey did love her sank in.

She looked at the window and picked up a chair. Bailey rolled on his side, as she raised it up, ready to hurl it at the window and take the chance of busting out a moving train full of meat eating rogues. He cleared his throat.

  “Mia… stop,” he said.

She lowered the chair and looked at him.

  “Bailey?” she said.

Bailey tried to smile, but the pain in his stomach was killing him slowly.

He looked at her and smiled.

“Don’t do that; it won’t work. They will just come in here and kill us both… or maybe just me, after they force you to go.”

Mia set the chair down and placed her hands on her hips.

“Bailey Morgan… I will not leave you here, and I will not go on a suicide mission for his Royal Assness. So, I suggest that you come up with a plan.”

Bailey grinned at her, and she looked at his blood stained teeth.

  “Fire,” he said.

Mia looked at the candles and grinned.

“Oh… you want me to start a fire?” she asked.

“Yes… we don’t have time, Mia… You have to do it now. Once the fire starts, run… go to Theodore with the book and tell him about Blake,” he said.

“Wait… you are staying?” Mia asked him.

Bailey laughed and blood came out of his mouth.

“Mia, I am already dead. Blake knows that. They won’t heal me, and I have no way to heal myself… I was stabbed with my own blade; it doesn’t get any better than that,” he said.

“No… no Bailey, you have to come with me.”

  Bailey shook his head.

“Mia, I am dead weight, cut the loss and save yourself… save all protectors from Blake’s plans.”

  “I… ah, I ummm… I just can’t do that, Bailey… I… I love you, you stupid boy!” she said.

“I know, Mia… I have always known,” he said.

Mia tilted her head, as she heard a tap on the door.

She looked up and yelled out.

  “I am not done!”

The tapping stopped, and she stared at the door hoping that no one barged in. I guess the only thing she had on her side was the fact that none of them wanted to do what she was told to do. Who would, really?

“Bailey… tell me. Why would Blake want Caine dead...? And the tree burned?” she asked.

“Why wouldn’t he, Mia… he is a demon.”

Mia eyes went wide, and she rubbed her arms.

“He bit me, Bailey!” she said, as the gravity of the situation settled in on her.

“I am dead; I will rot with age now!”

“Mia… stop. You have to get to Theodore. He can help you… he can; I just know it.”

“Shit,” Mia muttered, as she looked at the candles in the room.

“Bailey,” she whispered, as she leaned down and touched his face.

“Kill me, Mia… before the fire does.”

Mia looked at his face and tears welled up in her eyes.

“I am so pissed at you,” she said, as she tried to smile.

“Mia… I was never good enough for you anyway, do it… please.”

Mia looked at him and pushed his face to the side. She bit into his neck, as she tried to not cry, and severed his artery. The blood started to flow from him, and she lowered her head and sobbed. She held him close to her until she felt his heartbeat make its last thump against her chest, and then she gently laid him down. She slowly rose up, with blood dripping from her lips and all over the front of her dress. She stood there and tilted her head, as someone tapped on the door again. She grabbed two candles and tilted them slightly, as the wax ran over her hands and dripped on the floor.

“Come in… I am done,” she said.

The door opened, and she lunged at the boy who had dragged her Bailey in and slammed the candles flame into his eye. He cried out, as he grabbed at his face, and she flipped over him and pulled his blade, slicing it through the air… severing his head from his shoulders. Chloe flashed in, and Mia grinned up at her, with blood all over her and dripping from the blade. Chloe held up her hand and tried to smile.

“Mia… there is no exit here. Give me the blade, and we will ignore this little tantrum.”

“Oh, this isn’t a tantrum, you demon bitch; this is your death day,” she said, as she rose up and flashed towards her.

Chloe ducked, and Mia’s blade barely missed her head, as it skimmed over her close enough to cut her hair. A piece of it floated to the ground, and Mia rose up behind her. She rammed the blade through her chest and leaned in, as she used all her strength to twist it, cracking through bone. Chloe opened her mouth, and then started to laugh, as Mia pulled it back out and walked to the front to face her. Chloe touched her chest and played with some exposed bone.

“This meat suit is a pain in my ass,” she hissed, as she spit out black blood.

“Tell me, how long have you been slithering around on the earth?” Mia asked.

“Long enough to eat as many of you as possible… Who do you think created the first rogue, you silly little bitch?” Chloe said, as she swayed on her feet.

  “Oh… okay.”

Mia reached over and tipped a candle on the floor. It rolled to Bailey’s body, and his clothing caught fire and smoke started to rise. Chloe looked at his body, as the flame rose up.

“See… you have demon in you, as all the rogues do. You killed your lover,” she said, as she started to laugh.

Mia leaned in and grinned at her.

“Tell me, why does Blake want to burn the tree?”

Chloe laughed, and Mia grabbed her head and held it over the flame. Chloe cried out, as the fire ate away half of the flesh on her face. Mia jerked her up, and Chloe laughed, as skin fell from the bone on her cheek.

“You think that I would tell you?” Chloe choked out.

Mia placed her back in the flame, and Chloe screamed again.

Mia jerked her up and gritted her teeth, as she stared into her eyeless sockets.

“I can do this all day,” Mia said.

Chloe spit out more black blood and grinned with yellowing teeth. Her skin started to turn pale white and black cracks started to appear. Mia jerked her face back towards the flame, and Chloe held her hand up and cried out.

  “I will tell you!”

  Mia smiled.

  “So?”

Chloe looked up, and her teeth were exposed from the fact that her top lip had burned away.

“The tree is a lock; the creator is the key. They are one in the same, connected in blood… The creator will never unlock the portal, allowing demons to pass into Valon… destroy the tree, destroy the creator,” she hissed.

“The tree sank into the black water,” Mia said.

“It is not in Valon… you stupid meat sack… the tree is…”

A flash filled the room, and Chloe was knocked form Mia’s grip. Mia fell backward and hit the window, cracking it, and slid down onto the table. Blake stood there and stared at the burning body of Bailey, and then his eyes scanned the room and settled on the headless boy and then on the pile of charred mess, that had been Chloe.

“Must I do everything myself?” Blake said, as she lowered his hand and stared at Mia.

He tilted his head and grinned at her.

  “Mia… my love.”

Mia rolled from the table and hit the floor, letting out a little moan as her knees cracked against the wood.

“I thought that we had a deal. You said you would run my errand, but in return, I come here to the mess you made of my minions and from the looks of it, the boy that you claimed to love,” he said.

Mia started to crawl across the floor, as she hissed from the pain in her back. She reached back, and a shard of glass was sticking out of it. Blake tilted his head and looked at it.

“Oh crap… that looks nasty,” he said, as he walked over and straddled her.

He reached down and put his foot on her shoulder, and she cried out, as he grabbed the glass and pushed it in a little before he pulled it out slowly. Mia rolled on her side, as he took his foot off of her and licked the glass clean of the blood on it. His eyes rolled in his head, and he trembled from the taste of it.

“Oh! Mia! You have no idea how tasty you are… A little sprinkle of demon blood with that sweet protector blood of yours… just heaven.”

Blake stopped and looked around and then laughed.

“I always get a little nervous when I mention ‘heaven’.”

Mia laughed and tried to push herself up.

She stumbled a little and then stood there staring him down.

“I would be more nervous to mention the creator, if I was you,” Mia said, as she gritted her teeth and the blood streamed down her back.

“Oh! That pathetic monkey… no, no… no, not at all really. I mean humans, protectors, what’s the difference...? All apes,” he said, as he started to pace, keeping his eyes on Mia.

“Protectors are not apes, far from it really… We came here to protect the earth and its creatures.”

“Oh really...? Well then, what is all the feeding business about then...? It was when the first protector tasted blood that we were able to start to come in. Not all of course, or we would be living in a different world, one of beauty and darkness.”

“Oh yea… I am sure,” Mia said, as she laughed and tried to look as if she was okay.

Blake sniffed the air, and then grinned at her, as his face started to fade in color and a pale white took the place of his flesh tone. His eyes rolled to black, and his teeth yellowed.

  Mia crinkled her nose.

“You know, I wouldn’t be all happy about the teeth thing you got going on… looks sick,” she said.

Blake smiled and chattered his teeth together, causing Mia to feel a shiver run down her spine.

“Mia… your sarcasm is wonderful, as is your defiance of reality. I will only find another to do my bidding, but it is exhausting to change one such as yourself, and hard to find… You see, without evil already lurking in you, it is twice as hard to transfer the blood,” he said.

“Yea, about that… I don’t appreciate it,” she said, as her vision started to blur a little.

The last of the flame burned out on Bailey’s body, and Blake walked over to the corpse, waving his hand over it.

He took a deep breath and then smiled at her.

“Oh… barbeque, tasty… You know, I could have healed him; would have too, if you would of only done as I asked you too.”

“Sure, right,” Mia said, as she stepped backward and felt the table against her leg. She glanced down and saw the blade on the floor.

Blake held his hands out, and his palms started to bleed.

Mia looked up at him and tilted her head.

“I am not human… so all the religious references don’t have any effect on me.” She said.

“Oh… true,” he said, as he lowered his hands and licked them both quickly.

“Sorry, I am used to messing with the other apes. I tend to get you mixed up,” he said.

“So… what now?” Mia asked, as she leaned on the table and gently nudged her foot under the hilt of the blade.

“Oh now...mmm. Let’s see. First, I will give you what you wanted all along… some serious dickin’… Ya know what I mean?” he said, as he laughed.

Mia sighed and raised an eyebrow.

  “Right,” she said.

Blake lost his smile and looked at her.

“What...? You doubt that I can ravage you...? I mean, once you go demon, it’s all demon from then on,” he said.

Mia grinned and looked at his crotch.

“I doubt that you have anything going on down there… I mean, you were sending me to do your dirty work,” she said.

Blake tilted his head and stared at her.

“I was sending you because demons cannot step into Valon,” he said.

“Oh! I see…and here I thought it was because you had no balls,” she said.

Blake clicked his tongue and crossed his arms on his chest.

“I think that we should get on the bed, and then you can let me know what you think.”

  Mia laughed.

Blake looked at her and shook his head.

“I am not asking your permission, Mia; I will have you,” he said.

Mia looked down at Bailey’s smoking bones on the floor, then up at him.

“I never asked you ‘ask’ me… maybe I like the thought of it being rough,” she said.

Blake raised his eyebrows at her.

“Well, that kinda takes the fun out of it… I mean, I want you to scream and beg.”

  Mia shrugged her shoulders.

  “Sorry,” she said.

“Mmm,” he said, as he waved his hand over Bailey’s body and it twitched a little. Mia looked at Bailey and sucked in her breath.

“Maybe if I animate this monkey, you will perk up.”

Bailey’s body rose up slowly, and his bottom jaw fell off.

Blake ran to it and picked it up, trying to put it back on.

  “Ooops, oh well.”

He smiled at Mia and t
ossed it.

  “Maybe I could just watch.”

Mia shook her head, as Bailey moved towards her. She quickly popped her foot up, and the blade flew up into the air. She grabbed it and stabbed Bailey in the chest. The blade stuck in his exposed ribs, and she grunted, as she backed up and placed her foot on his chest, pulling it out. Bailey fell to the floor, and Blake stood there behind him.

“Wanna play?” he asked, as he raised his hand.

Mia rose from the ground and looked around in a panic. She stabbed a candle with her blade and smacked Blake upside the head with it. He stumbled to the side and swiped his hand at the candle, then peeled the wax off of his face. He looked at it and grinned, as he dropped it on the ground.

“I like you… you are a fireball,” he said.

Mia cried out, as she flipped her legs up and kicked the ceiling of the cabin, flipping in the air. She came down… blade in hand and rammed it right through the top of his head. It popped out his throat, and he stumbled backward. She landed on the table and stared at him, hoping that she had done enough damage to kill him. He grunted, as he touched the tip of the blade, and looked at his fingertip. He tried to talk but nothing came out but black blood; it flowed down his throat and onto his white shirt like a slow moving lava flow.

Mia stood up straight and looked behind her. Blake lifted his hands and flicked them. Mia hit the window, and it cracked wide open. She flew from the train and hit the ground rolling. She rolled about twenty feet and then stopped, moaning from the sheer force of the hit to the ground and the injury that still bled on her back. She tried to push herself up, and then she felt hands scoop her up. She looked up and saw a pretty boy, holding her close to him as he flashed into the forest. She touched his face and grinned.

“You look like an angel,” she muttered.

Josh looked down at her and grinned.

“I have been mistaken for that before.”

Mia’s head fell back, and Josh started to move faster… back towards home, the house they had all grown to love in Calvary.

  Chapter 16

  Red to Black

I walked down the street, following Sara… thinking about Josh. Of course I am thinking about Josh. His lips, the way his hair falls into his face… the way he sighs at my mouth when he kisses me. I rubbed my hands together and felt a vibration in them, so not normal… and yet felt normal to me. Enough so, that I stopped, and Sara turned and looked at me, tilting her head.
