Young Mutants in Love Page 20

“Who said you could sit in that chair?” Karis replied as she threw a crumpled wad of paper at him.

“Well, no one else was using it,” Diz muttered as he spun the chair around several times.

“Why don’t we just leave it empty for now,” Gavin suggested. “There are plenty of other things to sort out before we worry about who gets to sit in the big chair.”

The conversation was ended by an alarm and an announcement from the station’s artificial intelligence.

“There is a disturbance that requires your attention on the planet, Mr. Know-It-All, and the rest of the team.”

  “What?” Gavin asked.

“I couldn’t resist changing the profiles on the computer,” Diz laughed as he fell out of the command chair.

“The-Fastest-Man-on-the-Planet is correct,” the computer replied. “However, your presence is needed at this time; I will convey you there now.”

Without any other warning, they were teleported to the surface where there was a large crowd of people cheering around them. They were directed to a stage in front of the U. N. building where several of the world leaders were seated.

They were led to a podium to wait until the crowd settled down. Kevin walked toward the podium followed by a small girl with blond hair carrying a covered tray. She was dressed in a copy of Karis’ costume but she had a B on her chest rather than a K.

Kevin took the tray and placed it on the podium and directed the little girl to stand next to Karis.

Karis knelt down beside her and gave her a big hug.

“Is that Burgundy?” Gavin asked as he knelt beside her too.

“Yes, it’s me,” Burgundy cheered and ran over to hug Gavin. “Mr. Kevin invited me to the party. He thought it would be a nice idea, and I get to see my angels again.”

  “Angels?” Karis asked.

“I saw on the news that you two were the same person when you saved me,” Burgundy replied with a smile. “You are both my angels.”

“That is sweet,” Gavin said as he rubbed her head. “Any idea what’s on that tray?”

“It’s a surprise, silly,” Burgundy scolded as she fixed her mussed-up hair.

Gavin picked her up so she could have a better view of the festivities.

“They could have given us some kind of warning,” Diz muttered. “I could have showered today, at least.”

“The computer might have warned us if we hadn’t been arguing with it about our names,” Cacy scolded as she poked him in the shoulder.

“Why is everything always my fault?” Diz asked in mock surprise.

“Because it usually is,” Karis said as she playfully jabbed him in the other shoulder.

“Ouch,” Diz replied as he rubbed his shoulders.

“People of Earth,” Kevin announced ignoring the humans on the stage, “we have gathered together today to celebrate the formation of a new union between our two worlds that has been brought about, in part, by the four figures you see here on the stage.

“Your world still needs time to grow, but it cannot ignore the place that it has in the universe anymore. The five of us are here to help you through those growing pains.

“As a symbol of the changing dynamic of this world, I have these packages for each of you. They hold the new costumes that have been prepared for you. They will be waiting at the station when you return.”

The crowd cheered as the packages were teleported away. Sensing that the festivities had ended, the crowd started to disperse.

Gavin set Burgundy down and she gave each of them the heroes a big hug. They expected her to run back to her mother who was waiting at the bottom of the stairs, but she just stood there a little longer with her hands behind her back.

“Is there something on your mind?” Gavin asked with a wink.

“Well,” Burgundy hesitated, “I was wondering if I could be a super hero someday like all of you. I think that would be a lot of fun.”

“You don’t need super powers to be a hero,” Karis said as she scooped Burgundy up in her arms. “You just have to do something to make the world a better place for everyone.”

“I can do that,” Burgundy beamed.

“I know you can,” Karis said as she kissed Burgundy’s forehead and set her back on the ground.

“I’m going to be an angel someday, just like you and Mr. Gavin,” Burgundy shouted as she ran to her mother’s waiting arms.

  “Cute kid,” Diz started.

“Don’t say anything more,” Karis insisted as she pointed a finger at him.

“What, I just said she was a cute kid,” Diz muttered.

“So what do we do now?” Cacy asked as she sat down on the top step. “We’re big heroes, and we have to protect the world, but what does that even mean? They could have left us some kind of manual or guide book.”

“Like How to be a Super Hero?” Diz joked.

“I don’t know about that, but I guess we do what we did before the Sh’Grithians made themselves known,” Gavin mused.

“And what is that,” Diz asked.

“Take things one day at time, one crisis at a time,” Gavin replied as he put his arm around Diz and shook him gently.

“When is the next one,” Diz laughed. “I’m starting to get bored here.”

A large wave rose out of the water in front of them and the cause of it was hidden by the water. There was a large, dark figure hidden in the water.

“Idiot,” Karis and Cacy said as they swatted Diz on either shoulder.

As the water settled, they could make out the form that vaguely resembled a whale with arms and legs walking out of the water towards the city.

“So what do we do now, fearless leader?” Diz asked Gavin as he sped over to his side.

“So now I’m in charge?” Gavin asked.

“You are the one that seems to know stuff,” Diz chuckled. “You should have known I was going to say that.”

“I think we all knew you were going to say that,” Karis groaned.

“So what’s the plan, boss?” Diz asked.

“We do what we always do,” Gavin explained.

“And what is that?” Cacy asked.

“Figure it out as we go,” Gavin laughed. “Diz, Karis see if you can get that thing to move away from populated areas so we can deal with it safely. Cacy and I will meet you there.”

“So how do we get wherever we’re going?” Cacy asked as she took Gavin’s hand and watched Karis and Diz chace after the whale.

“We’ll get the ship to teleport us there,” Gavin replied with a wink. “Have I told you lately that you are beautiful?”

“I don’t know if you’ve ever told me that,” Cacy answered. “I’m certainly not as pretty as I was when I was sharing a body with Karis.”

“Nonsense,” Gavin countered, “I like you better this way. I’ve missed the Cacy I fell in love with.”

“That may be the sweetest thing you’ve ever said to me,” Cacy whispered, “but we have other things to worry about right now.”

“I know,” Gavin muttered, “and after this whale, we have to rush off to Paris, and not for anything romantic.”

“Do I even want to know?” Cacy asked.

Gavin didn’t answer. He just gave her a gentle, but passionate kiss as the computer teleported them to the small island where Karis and Diz were waiting for them.
