Robert Booth (Marblehead, MA) grew up on salt water as a lobsterman, yacht racer, and sailing instructor. He is an authority on New England’s historic architecture and maritime culture and curator emeritus of the Pickering House (1664) of Salem. In 2005 he helped to rescue America’s last surviving Revolutionary War privateering base, which was moved from Marblehead to Salem’s federal park devoted to seafaring. He works as executive director of the Center for Clinical Social Work, a national association for members of the largest mental health-care profession in the country. Among his publications are the guidebook Boston’s Freedom Trail, still in print after thirty years; a chapter in the 2004 anthology Salem: Place, Myth and Memory; the book Death of an Empire: The Rise and Murderous Fall of Salem, America’s Richest City (Thomas Dunne Books, NY, 2011), and the upcoming The Women of Marblehead, a feminist history of the town in the nineteenth century.
