Malcolm is in the parking lot out front waiting for me. I made a good choice when hiring him. He’s a retired Navy Seal and he doesn’t miss anything. Hopefully, he will have some new information for me. I nod to my lawyer Charles without a word and head for my car and driver. I hear Charles say, “We need to talk,” just as I duck into the backseat … another time, I think.
No time for small talk, “Any news?”
“Sir we traced her cell phone, but it was dumped near the Mexican border in a garbage can,” I listen to Malcolm intently; this information has me even more curious.
“Do you think she was taken across the border?” Malcolm’s eyes meet mine in the rearview mirror. “In my honest opinion sir, I think whoever took her wanted us to think they took her across the border. I’m pretty sure they have her held up somewhere around here.”
I think about his assumption. “I agree.” I sit silent letting everything compile in my thoughts before asking, “If for some reason this isn’t Eric Manchester, could it be someone who has a grudge against me?”
“Anything is possible sir.”
If some bastard took the most precious thing to my heart … to get at me, that person will regret every breath they ever took.
