Chapter One
Men are such babies
Amethyst
I hate exam day. Why can’t we be like a normal school and have our test on paper, or special forms where you bubble in the answers with a #2 pencil? Of course, it couldn’t be that simple, because here at Draiochta Academy everything is different. Like right now, I’m currently standing in front of the class across from my opponent Jinx, no shit that’s really his name, as we battle it out in conjuring class.
Conjuring class? Probably the first sign that Draiochta isn’t a normal school, and neither Jinx or I are regular students. Although, with the standard of this place ‘regular’ can be taken very subjectively. Everyone in this particular class are witches, dark witches to be exact. I’m a curse worker with hexing and karma magic. Jinx is half winter fae and a spell caster who just so happens to excel at conjuring, so I’m not exaggerating when I say right now I’m in deep shit. If I lose to him, I won’t necessarily fail the exam, that decision all depends on how badly I lose. However, I plan on winning so I can't think about that. Positive thinking and all that Yin Yang bullshit.
To put it simply, Draiochta is an academy for magical beings. Supernaturals like myself. Yes, we do exist. There's a whole other world out there that has been made blind to human eyes. Mostly because we have many rules to ensure that it stays that way. The number one and most important? Never reveal yourself to a human ever. Trust me you won’t like the consequences. Even I, who likes to live on the edge, knows better, but that’s not important right now. What is important? Winning this battle.
I take in Jinx’s face as I try to probe his mind looking for a weakness. I’m not surprised when I don’t find any. Jinx is a tough opponent, probably the reason why our teacher put us against each other. Jinx is also lost, concentrating on me as he looks for cracks in the shield I’ve cast around my body. His dark shaggy hair hangs low with thick locks covering his beautiful green-gray eyes on the right side. His nose is scrunched up, his full lips pursed as he mumbles the spell he’s using under his breath.
What is going through that beautiful head of yours? I think to myself. No way would I ever say the words out loud. Jinx is conceited as hell. He knows he’s hot and has left a trail of broken hearts behind him long enough to wrap around the world at least once.
Just when I think I’m about to finally find a break through his defenses, my hands move on their own accord to my button-down and starts to undo the buttons. What the fuck? So this is how he’s going to play it. A ‘loose your clothes spell.’ I would have thought he would have been more original. As if he could hear my thoughts, my feet, like my hands start to move on their own accord, working against my will until I’m slowly walking towards him. My fingers have undone the last button, and I shrug out my shirt allowing it to flutter onto the floor revealing my lilac lace bra.
If you’re wondering, we do have a professor, and he as well as the rest of the class are watching with adapt fascination, for him I’m sure it’s more clinical, but still his eyes are on us, and he has no intention of stopping this battle. Just ask the girl who had her lips wrapped around her opponent’s dick when she lost. I try not to think about that or let my panic sink in, even as Jinx’s pretty eyes land on my body, staring at the swell of my breasts with an uncontrolled heat and desire. When my hands move to my jeans, I grit my teeth in frustration. God damn it Amethyst, get it together.
Pep talk aside it’s time to go on the defensive. I’m a dark witch, from a long line of light witches, and as you guessed from the name, we do not do goody two shoes spells. Glinda does not exist in my world, only the Wicked Witch of the East, and she’s smart enough to know not to get trampled by houses. Scheming and tricks are the only tools that work in my world. The doe eyed, good girl won’t survive here. Why does that matter? Well, it means I can’t actually protect myself, I can only counter. Closing my eyes, I feel for Jinx’s magic, and when I catch the scent of frosted blueberries I know I’ve found it. All witches powers, light or dark has an aura to it. A color and scent that identifies it as your own. Mine is purple and smells like lavender, Jinxs’ is blue and smells like frosted blueberries.
When I catch the scent, I open my eyes and tug on the raveling threads surrounding him. Not all witches can see the threads of magic like I can. Actually very few can really. It’s a rare talent I must have also gotten from my father as well as my powers, but it’s not like I can ask him. My grandmother on my maternal side ran him off for being with my
mother and she died shortly after from a broken heart. I’m all that’s left of my parents, the dark stain of controversy my grandmother tries her best to hide. Just like she tried hiding that I am a dark witch and not a light witch like them.
When I tug again on Jinx’s magic, he feels it and arches one of his perfect brows. The one that’s not covered by his lush hair. I’m now standing right in front of him, with my jeans unbutton and my zipper down. As I raise my arms around his neck, his own hands go to my hips, giving them a firm squeeze. I can feel his body heat, his blueberry scent leaving me feeling hazy. A feeling that has nothing to do with his powers. I’ve always felt a pull to him for whatever strange reason. I don’t know why, nor can I even begin to explain. I think maybe part of my brain ran away chasing after my common sense, but at least some have remained for me to function on full cylinders since I refuse to give in and be just another notch on his bed, so most of the time I ignore the feeling and stay as far away from him as possible. We don’t even run in the same circles. Besides both of us being dark witches that’s the only thing we have in common. He’s Mr. Popular while I’m the quirky loner chick. Mind you, a total badass, but still a bit of a loner.
When I look up, his gaze locks on mine, the greenish gray holding my own violet eyes prisoner. Fuck, he’s pretty. It’s so damn unfair. When my lips move closer to his, he drops his concentration thinking he has won. Once our lips touch, the pillowy softness of his landing on mine, I take advantage of his distraction and close my eyes as I murmur a spell.
Twisted desire
Set on fire
Break the chain to me
Turnabout is fair play
Now do as I say
Show me what you can do and bust a move
Jinx’s eyes widen when he takes an involuntary step away from me and turns to the class and starts dancing. Not just any dance, but total teen pop, boy band dancing. The whole class burst out laughing, and even our teacher Mr. Langston can’t hide his grin.
When it’s over, Mr. Langston claps, praising me. “Good comeback Amethyst, and you Jinx,” Mr. Langston scolds once I release Jinx from my spell. “Always remember to never drop your guard until your opponent is defeated. There's no such thing as rules in the world of dark magic.”
We both take our seats and I’m glad that mine is well away from Jinx as he scowls at me for the rest of class. Men are such babies and sore losers.
Chapter Two
Karma
The rest of the class goes by pretty uneventful. This is my last year here and I couldn’t be happier. I’m not what you would call popular, and I’ve had it far from easy since I started here. In fact, it’s been pure hell. I’ve been ostracized all my life. First from my family because I was never like them, more so after we found out I take after my father and not my mother and am actually a dark witch. Then the students here after they found out what I really was.
Curse workers and hex witches are not popular. We’re considered the most powerful in the line of dark witches and by default the most feared in the community, so you can guess how unpopular that classification has made me. Many claimed I’ve always known what I was and was just pretending to be a light witch, but that’s not the case at all or how it really went down. No one was more surprised than me when I found out the truth about myself. For years, I thought I was defective when I couldn’t do any light magic. It took a very perceptive teacher to find out what was really going on with me, and many tests afterward that revealed my abilities, but out of all the students here, the wolves are the ones that have given me the most grief.
Yep, you heard right. If witches are real, people that can actually turn into wolves shouldn’t be that hard of a stretch to believe. As well as vampires, fae, other shifters, mermaids, and reapers. I told you there's a whole other world out there. One species, in particular, has been a thorn in my side since my grandmother dropped me off at the front gates and never looked back. The town I’m from isn’t far from here, but everyone who attends the academy stays in dorms unless you have special permission to live off-site.
Anyways Aiden, the next Alpha in his pack has had it out for me since forever, and it seems to only get worse as the days goes by. His on-again, off-again girlfriend Julbie is far from my BFF and hasn’t exactly made my life any easier either. Because Aiden’s their next Alpha, the wolves here have shown me more hostility than even the light witches. I don’t know what Aiden’s deal is, but I’ll be glad once this year is over. I’ll graduate and move far as hell away from here. My dream is to move to New Orleans and make it out there on my own. I’ll be free to be my own person without people judging me for what I am. No covens and their stupid rules, family drama, or hostile wolves to make my life hell. Just pure unregulated bliss.
Homeroom through third block, I spend with other dark witches like myself. After that is lunch. After the first week of school and a nasty run-in with Julbie, where she dumped a whole tray of spaghetti over my head, I haven’t stepped foot in the lunchroom. I usually spend my lunch hour in my dorm room or in the library so I don’t have to deal with the Mean Girl drama. It wasn’t that I couldn’t deal with it, I would probably just kill her by ‘accident’ and that shit was messy. Expel worthy. If you don’t graduate, you can’t use your powers, ever. No one wants to live their life as a human.
The classes after lunch have us blending in with the other supes and I have English, biology, statistics, and world history, all classes in which Aiden is in. Yay, lucky me, or in this case, NOT. I was told I have a touch of Lady Luck magic from my mother, the only good witch powers I received from her, and I’m supposed to be lucky as shit. Sometimes, fuck that, most of the time I think that’s a bunch of bull, especially with bullies like Aiden and Julbie.
Have I mentioned Aiden is a total hottie? Why are all the good looking guys such assholes? Picture this. Thick wavy blonde hair, golden eyes, and a body to die for. Not to mention, if the rumors are true, he’s well endowed, and knows how to use his member. Not that I would ever find out or be suicidal enough to ask his GF Julbie, or is this an off week and she’s his ex? Who knows with them. I’ve never seen two people break up and get back together so much in my life. Their relationship is like a soap opera. Personally, I think Days of Their Lives has far more fascinating characters, but that's just my opinion.
When I stop by my locker Julbie is there with her two besties/lackeys. I swear between the three of them they only have one brain. Julbies,’ and what she says goes.
“Well if it isn’t orphan Annie,” Julbie snarks.
My home life is no secret. Everyone knows my mother is dead and my father has never been a part of my life. Most people have even went as far as to say that I killed my mother and ran my father off.
I ignore her as I put the books I won’t need back into my locker and pull out my history book. Maybe if I don’t acknowledge them they’ll go away.
“Hey loser, didn’t you hear Julbie talking to you or have you gone deaf?” Lackey number one comments, dashing that hope.
“Maybe she’s too stupid to comprehend,” Lackey number two says, getting in on the action.
Still, I don’t say anything. It’s not worth it. Three on one is not such great odds even with Lady Luck on my side. Too bad Julbie and her friends wouldn’t let it rest because Lackey one, Toya, reaches out and grabs my arm in a bruising grip.
Done with being silent I growl, “I suggest you let me go before something bad happens.”
“And what are you going to do?” She questions, raising her brow. “You’re unwanted trash that no one wants, discarded and left to rot. What can you possibly do to me?”
I warned her, I really did, and as the words leave her mouth, I feel the involuntary brush of magic as it deals out the karma she deserves. That’s the thing about karma magic, it doesn’t discriminate or wait for a reason and 100% of the time it’s unpredictable, so when purple sparks start to sparkle on Toya’s nose, my eyes widen when the sparks clear and instead of her regula
r human nose there's a pig nose in its place. Lackey two steps back with a horrified look on her face and Julbie turns her glare on me, her blue eyes lighting like blue fire. If looks could kill, I would be a fried witch right now. I keep my face impassive as I roll my eyes. Best to look tougher than I feel right now. Never show a wolf fear. Didn’t I warn the stupid cunt? Before the situation can get out of hand an arm comes around my shoulders and the smell of frosted blueberries fills my nose. Jinx.
“Is there a problem here?” Jinx asks in a husky jaw dropping voice. One that makes you want to strip naked and present oneself like a prized turkey, or is that just me? See, stupid idiotic pull and it’s equally crazy unwanted attraction.
