Once in my room, Jinx asks, “what’s going on with you and the wolf?”
“Nothing,” I answer a little too quickly.
“Baby,” he says, dragging the word out.
“Really it’s nothing. Aiden and Julbie have been tormenting me since day one. I’ve never done anything to them. Besides the karma magic the other day, I try to stay off their radar, but Julbie seems to hate me more than any of the wolves. It’s almost borderline psycho.”
“I can see why,” Jinx mutters.
“What the hex does that mean?” I question, placing my hands on my hips.
“You can’t tell me you don’t see it?”
“See what?” I ask confused.
“Aiden, he’s into you,” he answers incredulously.
“Babe, I’m starting to think you take drugs. Aiden is not into me. He hates me.”
“There’s a short line between love and hate and I know what I saw. He’s into you, In fact, I’ll bet my fortune that he’s made a move on you recently, and his attraction towards you is the real reason why Julbie hates you so much. I bet even she knows how into you he is. The only two people who don’t know it is you two.”
“That’s absurd,” I say, waving his conclusion off. It’s silly, and he couldn’t be more wrong. “I think you need glasses. When’s the last time you’ve been to the optometrist?” I tease.
“Fine, baby I’ll let you stay in denial for now, just know that I will not hesitate to let the wolf know that you’re mine.”
“I saw. Look, can we let this go?” I whine. Moving forward, I bring his lips to mine. My distraction works like a charm, and his lips move across mine growing more passionate with each pass. Soon we’re both naked in bed distracting each other in the best of ways.
Jinx stays the night causing him to wake super early to do the walk of shame back to his own room. When he leaves, I take a long hot shower to help ease my sore muscles. I have gone from a nonexistent sex life to an active one in a matter of days and Jinx was way bigger than my dildo, his tongue far more talented than my vibrator. It’s no wonder he’s turning me into a sex addict. No matter how many times we do it, I can never get enough of him. It’s like every time is better than the last. I’m glad the walls in this place is made from thick concrete or everyone in this school would know I’m getting some and with who.
I groan thinking about how this day is going to go. So many females are going to be pissed that Jinx is off the market and is with me. They will do whatever to test us just to see how serious he is about me. I’m ashamed to say that if it weren’t for the bond I might doubt his faithfulness. I still can’t see what it is about me that he loves so much. I hate myself for my lack of confidence. How some days I fall into my family’s bullshit thinking I’m not worthy, that I’m nothing. It’s a hard mentality to break out of when it’s been driven into you your whole life.
It doesn’t take me long to get dressed. I put one of my quirky outfits. High waist stone washed jeans with my purple suspenders with little black cats covering them and a tight midriff top. There's a slight lump from the ring hanging on the chain, but it’s not like anyone pays me any attention to notice it. I pair the outfit with a bright pair of yellow heels hoping the color will drive away my depression and self-doubt. A pair of drool worthy heels always make the best therapy. Not wanting to bother with drying my hair, I douse it with dry shampoo and braid it in a long fishtail braid that hangs neatly over my shoulder and to the front. I usually go to class with a face clear of makeup, but I put on some mascara and a little gloss. I looked good without looking like I tried which was exactly the look I wanted to achieve.
In class instead of sitting way across the room, Jinx trades seats with another witch and sits right next to me. All eyes turn to us when he grabs my hand and holds it under the desk.
“You look great,” he says in a low voice, not at all caring about the many eyes and whispers around us, talking about us.
“This is how I normally dress,” I reply.
“It is, but...I don’t know, something is different.”
“I have on lip gloss,” I point out.
He pretends to think about it before he says, “no it’s not that.”
“Well, I don’t know what it can be,” I retort playing along.
“Ah, I know,” he says, snapping his fingers.
“Well, do tell.”
Leaning in he whispers in my ear, “it must be that ‘just been fucked glow’ you’re wearing so well.”
“Oh wow,” is all I can say as I shift in my seat. How am I getting wet right now? We’re in freaking class. He gives me a cocky grin knowing just what his naughty words do to my body. “Cheeky, dark witch,” I mutter under my breath and he laughs loudly. Lucky for him, Mr. Langston walks in saving him from one of my witty retorts.
School goes exactly as I thought it would. Rumors flew rapidly about Jinx’s new taken status and who he’s taken by. The females here did whatever they could do to get his attention to prove that his being with me was all a joke. I’ve never seen him so surly, but I guess that’s bound to happen when you have girls practically throwing themselves at you left and right. I thought I would get jealous like I did with the stewardess, but our bond was solid and his annoyance amused me, overriding that unneeded jealousy. When we separate for our afternoon classes he gives me a full on kiss with tongue and all right in the hall for all to see. My brain was so foggy I don’t even know how I found my seat.
“I don’t know what he sees in her,” I hear a voice harshly whisper.
"Yeah, didn’t she kill her parents or something?"
"It’s probably because she’s a Nightingale and is rich, you know one of them arranged pairings."
"I heard her family doesn’t even claim her."
I’m not going to lie their words hurt, but I ignore them the best I can. By the time I get to my last class I’m in a foul mood. I forgot my bag in my room so I have to go to my locker to retrieve my World History book. I groan loudly at the waiting party. I wish my locker wasn’t so close to Julbies’ then I wouldn’t have to deal with her and her posse on a daily basis.
“Hey Annie, where’s your boyfriend?” She snarks in her annoying voice. It sounds like nails on a chalkboard.
“I saw him and Ashley looking quite cozy in study hall,” Toya voices, but she sounds like she has a cold with her pig nose. The small tic in my jaw is the only tell I show that what she said annoyed me. I was so focused on ignoring the others bad mouthing me that I haven’t been focusing on my bond with Jinx. I just assumed it’d be much the same. Annoyance from all the female attention he’s getting. I never thought he’d act on it as soon as I was out of sight.
“She is a much better fit than lumpy Ann over here,” lackey two retorts. I could never remember her name. I’ll just stick with pig nose and lackey.
“I heard there’s a bet going on with the football team that he couldn’t get her in bed,” pig nose snarls gleefully.
I don’t know why I’m listening to any of them. Jinx has more than proven how devoted to me he is. The ring warming against my skin is proof, but I let their words slip through the cracks of my own psyche and doubt quickly forms. I don’t bother to speak as they carry on talking about me like I’m not there. Grabbing my book, I slam my locker shut and turn toward class. A hard yank and a burning sensation on my scalp makes me howl in pain. When I turn my head, Julbie has a firm hold on my braid.
“What the fuck Julbie? Let me go you, psycho bitch,” I shout. All eyes in the hall turn to us as they take in the show like their at the movies. All is missing is a tub of popcorn and a soft drink.
“I don’t care what’s going on with you and Jinx, but when he dumps your slutty ass make sure you stay the fuck away from Aiden.”
With those words, I stare horrified as she takes out a large pair of scissors. I swear it’s like everything goes in slow motion as I watch her cut my braid in half and the fine strands of my hair falls heavy past my shoulder and
onto my chest. My heart shatters into a billion microscopic pieces as the reality of what happened hits me. She’s cut my hair, my only connection to my mother. The thing that mattered to me the most. My insides die, and a cold fury consumes me. I don’t know what happens after that. I just snap, Amethyst has left the building, and in her place is vengeance. Julbie wisely takes a step back as my whole body lights up like a spotlight. Something inside me ignites, and purple magic explodes out my body sending Julbie and her lackeys into the lockers. The lockers melt and mold around their bodies trapping them there. I ignore their screams. I don’t even bother to help. The tears, their pleas mean nothing to me. I stand by watching detached as the lockers turns on Julbie, breaking each one of her bones from her waist down. This is karma magic at its worst. What happens when you’ve wakened the beast. In a trance, I bend down to pick up my braid from the floor and I leave them to their screams.
I walk without stopping, out the school, across the lush green lawn, through the forest, all the way to the water’s edge as the Atlantic crash against the rocks. I don’t know how long I sit there, hugging my knees tighty to my body as I grip my cut brain in a deathlock. A tear rolls slowly down my cheek, the frigid air making it feel like ice. It was colder out this way, but I did not want to turn back. I don’t know what the consequences are for breaking someone’s bones, and quite frankly I didn’t care. That bitch deserved it. She deserved more. That is why I’m staying put because if I go back, I feel like I’ll do something to her I won’t be able to turn back from. I won’t have karma magic to protect me from the consequences. Since finding out what I really was I’ve felt a power lying dormant inside me far darker than anything I have ever experienced. I try to keep it hidden, contained. Until now I’ve never actually wanted to access it and make my enemies pay. Defy the 3 rule just to prove I’m not as docile as everyone thinks. Bring out my greatest fear that my father is not a good man, and I’m my father’s daughter.
I would have thought it would be Jinx who finds me first, never in a million years would I have thought it would be the wolf who tracks me down. When he gets within hearing distance I say softly, “have you come for revenge?”
“I’ve come to check on you,” he answers, surprising me.
“Why? Shouldn’t you be worried about your girlfriend, or are you here so you can investigate the matter like last time?” I retort snidely.
“One of my Betas was in the hall and saw the whole thing.”
“Did he tell you all about how the crazy witch snapped and broke your girlfriend’s legs.”
“It’s his job to tell me the truth of what he witnessed and he did. He said Ju..
“Truth,” I laugh maniacally, interrupting him. “That’s funny. Whose truth are we talking about here? Julbie’s or what really happened?”
“The truth. He said Julbie and her friends were up to their regular bullshit when Julbie took it a step further and cut your hair. He said he has never seen anything like it. How shattered you looked, broken.” The end was spoken softly like it somehow hurt him. Which it shouldn’t because the bastard was exactly that, a bastard.
I don’t know why, I’m not the sharing is caring type, but when I open my mouth I hear myself say, “my mother had long hair just like mine was. It was one of the few pieces of her I was able to keep, and Julbie, when she cut my hair she broke something in me. Shattered me. I wanted to kill her, I probably would have if I didn’t make myself leave.”
“Was it karma magic that did that to her?” He asks.
“Yes, a strong dose of it. Stronger than I have ever seen.”
“I figured that. She took something important from you so in turn karma took what she valued the most, her legs. A wolf’s limbs, as well as our teeth, are what we care the most about. Without them we can’t fight properly, we’re nothing.”
“I’m surprised you believe me and not here demanding me to fix her like pig nose.”
“I know you can’t. Besides, she’ll be fine in a couple days. When we were seeking out help for Toya we found an old crone strong enough to unravel your karma magic. It will cost her parents a pretty penny, but it’ll be done.”
“If you have someone who can help you why does Toya still have her pig nose?” I ask curious.
“Her parents can’t afford to pay the price the old crone wants to fix her. Amethyst,” he sighs. “I’m not sure if you’re aware, because I’m sure no one has taken the time out to tell you this or even want you to know, but you are one of the strongest dark witches in existence, far stronger than any of the teachers here. Mr. Langston, your dark witch teacher said it’s been years since a student with your potential attended here. We had a hard time finding a light witch powerful enough to unravel the spell, and she didn’t come cheap. In fact, she asked afterward if it were possible if she could meet you.”
“Why?”
“I don’t know, curiosity I guess. She was quite surprised that the dark witch who cast the spell in the first place was still in the academy.”
“I'd rather not, meet her I mean. I hadn't exactly had it easy with light witches.”
“That’s understandable. I told her I would ask.”
“I thought you wolves took care of your own. Why won’t your pack help pay to get her nose fixed?” I question.
“My father, the current Alpha ordered not to. With my investigation he ruled Toya was cursed from her own wrongdoing, so she deserves her punishment and if she wants it fixed her and her family should pay for it themselves and not involve the pack.”
“Well aren’t you guys all diplomatic and shit.” I hug my knees tighter to my body for heat. The air was growing colder. Now since my anger has gone down some, I was starting to feel the weather. I groan at the state of my shoes. They were ruined, covered in mud and sand from the beach. I even had a tiny scuff mark from gods know what.
“What’s wrong?” Aiden ask, moving closer.
“My shoes, they’re ruined,” I cry. I shiver again and he moves even closer like he’s about to pull me to his body to warm me when a voice behind us stops him.
“There you are, baby, I’ve been looking everywhere for you,” Jinx says, pulling me close. He hugs my body and I inhale his comforting scent. He calms me, and just like that my previous anger seeps away in floating tendrils in the wind. Aiden may have helped by talking to me, but Jinx's presences help cure me. I know Jinxs’ intentions, Aiden’s is still unknown and quite frankly unwanted when they come with Julbie’s fury. She almost turned me into someone I don’t care to be. The type of person that have given dark witches a bad rep through history. I can’t go there again, I just can’t. When he pulls back he gazes deep in my eyes and runs his thumbs across my cheeks. “Are you okay?” He asks so sweetly it makes me want to cry.
“I’m getting there,” I answer honestly.
His probing gaze searches me, and I’m guessing he sees I’m telling the truth because he drops his gaze to my hair. Picking up the seared braid he studies it. “I’ll fly you to one of the top stylists in New York to get this even out properly.”
“Oh great another haircut,” I gripe. I know it has to be taken care of, but the thought of my hair being subjected to more scissors did not bode well with me. Fucking Julbie.
“I hope you plan on doing something about this wolf,” Jinx growls at Aiden. I almost forgot he was here. I feel odd about him witnessing our tender moment.
“It’ll be taken care of,” is all he says before walking away. The look he gives me confuses me even more, and I hide my face in Jinx’s chest. I don’t know what is going on with Aiden, nor do I want to believe Jinx when he says Aiden is into me. He’s an Alpha, born to lead his pack. We could never be together. Besides I have my own mate and two hostile families to deal with. That’s enough trouble for a lifetime, and Aiden has fucking Julbie. Good luck with that.
When we get back to the Academy Mr. Langston is waiting on us at the door. He looks stressed and I wonder if it is because of me. I remember what Aiden sa
id about me being the most powerful witch here. Truly that is something I can’t wrap my mind around. If I want answers I know Mr. Langston is the one to ask. He’s the observant witch who first noticed who and what I truly was.
“Jinx, your parents are here and they would like to see both you and Amethyst.”
“Great,” I mutter as Jinx curses. This day just gets better and better.
If Jinx is feeling anything about his parents being here he doesn’t let on. Instead, he grabs onto my hand tighter and leads us through the halls. Mr. Langston follows a couple steps behind us with his hands clasped behind his back. Does he know? Did Jinx’s parents somehow find out? I wish I could have Jinx’s confidence right about now because I was freaking the hex out. The only comfort I take is with my hair and his parents being here this day couldn’t get any worse. When we enter a large waiting room next to the headmaster’s office my eyes practically bug out my head when I see who’s standing next to Jinx’s parents. I was wrong when I said this day couldn’t get any worse, because of all the people who would come here I never thought it would be my wicked grandmother and her just as nasty sidekick, my aunt.
Fuck me, they know.
