Something True Page 9

by Jessica Roe

She just grins. “I can tell. But you'll get used to it – this is your world now. People just wanna tell you how awesome they think you are.”

I kiss the curve of her neck, never able to get enough of her. “You are my world,” I correct softly.

Her body stiffens in my arms and I go cold with fear as I realize I've just revealed too much. I've been so careful about hiding my true feelings for her, not wanting to throw her in the deep end and freak her out.

But then she spins in my embrace, wrapping her arms around my neck. “I love you too,” she breathes.

For a long, gormless moment I just stand there, staring down at her with a gaping mouth. I love you too? Did I. . .did I say that I loved her out loud?

Then it occurs to me that she must have overheard me saying it one night when I'd thought she was asleep. I almost berate myself for being so careless before her words pierce my brain.

  I love you too.

She loves me back. She fucking loves me back.

I let out a joyous laugh and clutch her soft cheeks with my hands, pressing my forehead against hers. A couple of nearby guests are watching on in interest, but I ignore them. I also ignore the sound of Jemma's voice when she declares that seeing us together is still weird. “I'll love you for as long as I live,” I promise, so quietly that no one but Ibbie can hear. This moment is ours and ours alone. “And I'll show you just how much, every single day, with all of my heart and all of my might.” And I mean it, because the love we share, it's something true. It's the truest thing I've ever known.

Her answering smile is sweet, overcome. “I know,” she says, and then she kisses me.
