“We also have some exciting news. Rory confirmed it yesterday. We are expecting a baby. Amber is twelve weeks along.”

Zoey slapped her hands over her mouth as a loud excited scream burst through her lips.

“Really? I am going to be a sister?” Her voice in a soft whisper, as if to make up for her loud scream.

  “Yes, poppet.”

“Is it a little brother, uncle Rory?”

“Too soon to tell, squirt. We will do a scan in a month’s time. Maybe we’ll be able to tell by then. I am sure your Mom won’t mind you coming with and seeing the pictures on the screen.”

Amber leaned wearily back against Damien’s strong chest and his arms folded around her. She was tired, but happy, gazing down at the crinkly face of their son. It was a long, drawn out labor and a difficult delivery.

So much so that Damien immediately declared there would be no more children. He could not stand seeing her in so much distress and pain. The helplessness he felt at being unable to draw her pain into him.

  “How are you feeling, beautiful?”

“I am fine, honey. It was probably not as bad as you experienced it. Us women are made of sturdy stuff.”

“Never again, Amber! I will not allow you to go through that much pain ever again. I think I should just go and have a vasectomy done as soon as you’re home.”

She nearly fell off the bed she whipped her head around so fast. Her eyes splintered him in two.

“Don’t you dare! I am telling you I am fine. Rory told you everything is fine. It was just a very difficult birth. It happens, honey. It is the way of life. Zoey’s birth was a breeze and the next one might very well be a breeze again.”

“You … you want more children? Even after this?”

She kissed him softly on the lips and his arms tightened around her and the precious bundle in her arms.

“It is not good for a child to grow up alone. Little Aiden is going to need a brother or sister to look out for, or maybe both. I don’t know … four sounds like a good number, doesn’t it?”

“If you say so my love. You know very well I can’t say no to you.”

“Hmmm … so then … how about a proper kiss, my husband?”

“Ask, my wife … and ye shall receive!”

Damien kissed her deeply, sensually and when she twirled her tongue around his, wildly and passionately. His words scorched her soul and she knew their love was forever and thereafter.

“I have nearly lost you forever because I focused on the past. I allowed it to hold me hostage and it became an anchor that pulled me deeper into despair. Now, here at this moment I pledge to you, my exquisite wife that I will always choose love. Love will be my guide and nothing will threaten the happiness of our marriage. Our love will always endure. I expect to have my happy ever after with you … But I know it does not come easily, it’s about work. And a commitment to grow together. A willingness to continually invest in creating something that can endure eternity. Building our happiness. Marriage is life, and it will bring ups and downs. Together I want us to embrace our life together, to keep building on our eternity, one brick at a time.”

Her heart beat warmly inside her chest, his words freeing her, offering her his forever after, and she clasped it with both her hands.

“With you by my side, Damien Jordan, no obstacle will be too big for us to overcome. I can’t wait to build our future with you … the continuance of our future we started eleven years ago.”

Their lips met sealing their pledges. Zoey’s teasing voice broke them apart as she gently lifted her precious little brother from his mother’s arms.

“Oohh … come here, little brother Aiden … you are waaayyy too young to be exposed to such heavy smooching!”
