“Scotland?”
His smiled gently, his thumb caressing my lips. “I know that this is important to you. So I guess I’ll just have to tag along.”
“Tag along?”
I’d officially become a parrot but my mind was mush. He wanted to marry me. He wanted to have a real future with me. He wanted to go to Scotland.
“I have my own business. I can work from anywhere. I may not be able to stay in Scotland the entire seven months but I think I can spend most of my time there and just come back here when I need to.”
The fear and dread I’d felt when this conversation first started had fallen away. No, it had been pushed out by the most wonderful feeling of joy I’d ever experienced. A thousand butterflies had been set free in my abdomen and their wings tickled my ribs, making me laugh and smile. This man…I was speechless.
Almost. Let’s face it. I like to talk.
“That’s a huge compromise for me. Are you sure?”
“It’s for us, my sweet Mia. Us.” He chuckled and shook his head. “You’re not getting this. I love you. We as a couple come first. It’s good practice for when we get married and have a family. We’ll go to Scotland. Together. We’ll make it work. Together. You were ready to walk away and that scares me but at the same time I’m busting my buttons with pride. You said that you deserved more and that you wouldn’t settle for anything less. Let me be the man to give it to you and hold me to the highest standards. I might need a little practice, but I’ll get there.”
My vision was blurred and it took a moment for me to realize that I was crying. Not from sadness but from sheer unadulterated happiness. I could have Josh and my dreams, too. I’d expected better but what I’d received was…
More. Far more than I’d ever imagined. It wouldn’t be easy. We’d disagree, argue, make up, and then find a compromise. We’d make plans for the future as best we could and we’d struggle to balance it all. But he was right that we’d do it together. We were far stronger as a couple than we were apart. He’d shown me that I could trust him with my heart and now he owned it completely. I had his as well.
Josh’s love was better than any fantasy I’d had as a girl growing up. This was real. Our future held so many possibilities I couldn’t wait for it to start.
Together.
I made a mental note to thank my sister. She’d written that silly man trap book after all, and it had helped me not settle for less. Shelby would probably be insufferable now but she deserved a few kudos.
Grabbing the front of Josh’s t-shirt I pulled him closer, a teasing smile on my face. “This is where you kiss me to seal the deal.”
Chuckling, he leaned down, a few curls falling over his forehead. “That sounds like an excellent start, but I think your plan needs work.”
I was open to suggestions.
“I’m listening.”
His lips pressed against mine and for a few minutes the world melted away and there was no one else in the universe but the two of us. When he finally lifted his head, the bastard had a grin a mile wide. He knew he was good. I, on the other hand, was a mess. Ragged breathing, hot cheeks, and a simmering warmth flying through my veins.
“I say we seal the deal in a more personal way,” he said with a naughty glint in his eye. “Preferably naked.”
“I like the sound of that. The naked part, too.”
We left a trail of clothes all the way to the bedroom.
