  PLEASE NOTE …

This is the third in a stand-alone series of linked books. Each story is based off the same incident aboard The New Horizon exploration ship from Earth. It was necessary to include some things that continue on from earlier books, for the sake of coherence. This is largely in the first chapter in the form of a little narrative summary. However, I have avoided including too much information about earlier books, because I’d hate to spoil the fun for readers jumping in at a later point in the series. I know a lot of you like to go back and read the earlier book in a series. Of course—my loyal fans who have been following the series just might get to meet up with their favorite characters again in future books. Please keep all this in mind as you start this book.

  Happy reading! <3

  The Story So Far

Simone was a doctor and an excellent one too. That's why she'd been selected to be the head medical officer aboard The New Horizon, a space ship with the technology necessary to actually leave the known space around Earth. Their goal was to explore and research what was out there in the big, black abyss of the cosmos.

When the terrifying frog-faced aliens had boarded the ship, she'd been completely unable to think of what to do. Her friend, Bree, one of the mechanics on board the ship, had tried to fend them off. But in the end, the two women had been taken back to the ship along with many of the other crew members. They did not know what happened to rest of the ship, or if anyone was left alive behind.

After being trapped in a cell with some other members of the crew for some time, the door suddenly opened and they were able to escape. There was a fire aboard the ship somewhere—the smell of smoke and burning was pungent. There were other captives too, all sorts of different alien races, some of them looking a lot like humans, and others who looked strange to the humans. Some of the escapees seemed to know where to go, and lead the rest to a large space port room filled with escape pods.

Two at a time, these pods allowed many of them to leave the ship before the horrible green aliens were able to stop them. Simone and Bree had boarded one of these pods and hurtled away from the alien's ship. Where they were headed, they had no idea, however. And that was before a strange smell filled the small pod, making them feel very drowsy.

  -Jaxxon-

"Can you hear me?" The voice was thin, weak, sounding far away. "Hello?"

Jaxxon opened his eyes and felt his hard body ache from being in deep sleep. Had his eyes been open the whole time? Yes, that was how he was in the tube, after all; the place where he essentially became a corpse for years, sometimes decades, at a time. Only, was he really alive in the first place, being half flesh and blood—half machine?

“Are you awake now? I pressed the right button, I think.” Before him was a young man, dressed in the brown military robe of Baklofer city. The man had an unfeeling glare, like he was just staring at a piece of farming equipment. It was not a man Jaxxon recognized.

"Yes," he said. In many ways, Jaxxon wasn't so different from any other city-owned property. But he was still strapped in tightly, unable to move even if he did somehow come back online on his own. That was not possible. As it was, he had no idea how long he'd been out. Memories of other awakenings came slowly, but forcefully, flooding back into his hazy mind.

Cybernetic. He barely even understood the word, yet he was a cyborg. If that didn't make for the most bitter-sweet irony, nothing did.

"Do you usually need to stretch out after your sleep?" asked the military man. He was wearing a plain, off-white belt. That meant he wasn't anyone special; just another grunt. "I'm not sure what you have to do here." The man seemed nervous.

"Where's the General?" Jaxxon asked. "Or, the new General if the old one's no longer in service. What year is it now?"

"You want to know how long you were 'sleeping'? Do not worry, it has not been as long this time. You will find things in much the same order as they were when you went to sleep." And then the military man just stood there looking like he wanted to leave, or trying to figure out what he should do with his hands while looking like a clueless dolt.

Jaxxon felt a pang of despair. If they had sent this rookie to retrieve him, instead of the General coming personally, he was no longer important to the city. What would he do then, if not hunt down the most dangerous criminals in the land and bring them in for justice?

There were footsteps, lots of them, hurrying along the outside corridor and quickly moving toward the sleeping chamber. The General entered with two armed guards flanking him. They had swords at their belts and carried short spears. Their armor looked much the same as it had when Jaxxon had been online the last time. And, yes, it was the very same General, a stocky but relatively short man with a worried look on his reddish face. He had a neatly trimmed beard and wore a red decorative hat that would have been useless for protecting his head from the elements outdoors. It denoted his rank and was only worn inside the palace walls.

The General looked pissed off and gave the rookie a harsh look as he entered. "What are you doing? I sent a messenger to your barracks ten minutes ago. Why is Jaxxon still strapped to his sleeping tube!" It looked like he was about to physically assault the young military man, who cowered and backed away.

"Sir, I apologize. The rest of the on-duty men from our barracks are out on routine border checks. This is… I've never done this before."

"Well get out, and be assured that I will be speaking to your captain. My only daughter is gone and here you are standing around with a moronic look on your face! Out, I said!"

"But what is all this?" asked the guard quickly, with a lowered voice as though he might be overheard. "These wires, and… I thought he was dead when I came in. How can this be our hero?" The cybernetic soldiers were generally little more than a rumor for most people.

"Out!" screamed the General, going from about three in volume to eleven in an instant, as he backhanded the young military man across the face. That sent the private running out of the room looking terrified.

Jaxxon was still feeling light headed and weak, so he just watched all this happen in partial focus. Not that he would have been
able to move or react if he wanted to. "General Plahter, what's wrong?" he asked with a raspy voice. "Wait, someone kidnapped your daughter? Get me out of this thing ."

The General was nodding profusely, and gestured for his guards to go to Jaxxon's tube. It was a tall standing thing of some ancient metal that no one could identify. While they knew that the palace itself was even older, no one could work out how long the cyborg hunters had been residing as a group within the inner walls of Baklofer Palace.

As the guards removed the wires and tubes from the inputs that were located all over Jaxxon's body, he grunted; it didn't exactly hurt, not much at least. The sensation was far from pleasant though, he imagined it was like being pulled from the womb. The imagery there was also ironic to him, since all memories of his mother and family were apparently lost to him forever. He did know they would have died generations ago, while he lived. He tried to feel worse about that than he did, but failed for some reason.

"There you are," said the General. "Now, let's get you checked out and back into action. I need you to understand the severity of the situation." He slapped Jaxxon on the back like he was one of his troops. The two guards looked upon this action with awe. Most people didn't dare touch one of the cyborg hunters, or even go near them unless they really had to.

They moved into the next room where there was a wide table made of cold steel. Two medical officers waited in their white robes: a man and a woman. It was hard to avoid taking another look at the woman, as she was beautiful.

The man wore the colored belt of a doctor, while the other appeared to be an assistant of some kind.

"Ah, it's good to see you again, Jaxxon. When a doctor becomes Chief in Medicine, they always hope to have the chance to work with one of you cyborgs before they lose the position, but twice is more than most doctors can dream of." The guy had a stupid look on his face, like he was a kid meeting his favorite gladiator in the street and asking for an autograph.

The female assistant's clear eyes were wide open, and she stared at Jaxxon with almost no attempt to hide her astonishment. Her gaze moved slowly up and down his naked body, stopping on particular areas, such as his hardened pectoral muscles, rigged abs, and his cybernetically enhanced, better-than-human penis. "Wow," she said, obviously by accident, before her hand shot to cover her mouth. Her skin was smooth looking and Jaxxon wondered how long it had really been—just decades, or maybe even centuries?—since he'd last felt the tender touch of a woman's body.

"Please, try to control yourself. Although, it's hard to resist being openly impressed by such a feat of medicine and machine, isn't it?" the doctor said to the female assistant.

  "Sure," she said with disappointment.

Jaxxon suddenly became very aware that he had no clothes on. He was as naked as the day he'd been born, or so he assumed; for all he knew, maybe he'd never been born in the regular, biological way. "I forgot that I had to be naked. Why do I always forget that? You'd think I'd be used to the inhumanity of it by now." He lay down on the steel table and tried to forget that three grown men were standing around like he was a damn lab experiment. Well, he kind of was exactly that.

The doctor and his pretty little assistant carried out a standard medical examination, like any regular human would go through. There was nothing wrong, of course. "Wow, you are really in peak physical condition, I mean—better than peak for one of us normal people. You should be honored to have so much power."

"Of course I am. But like you said, being 'not normal' has a range of different problems to deal with." Jaxxon wasn't in the mood for this pandering. At least the military officers were direct about what they wanted. "Can we please move this along? I'm not letting those bastards get away because you think I'm neat."

"What? Oh… fine." He looked crestfallen but quickly gathered up his shattered ego and turned to his assistant. "Onto the further examination then. Pass me the number three socket. And of course the small scalpel." He got a more sadistic look on his face as he mentioned the latter item.

His assistant took a shiny little tool off of a trolley of various medical instruments and handed it to him. Some of them looked more like miniaturized repair tools than anything that would be in a medical lab. The whole time during the examination, she kept on stealing glances at Jaxxon's naked body, particularly his dick and most erogenous muscular areas.

Pressing down on the side of Jaxxon's neck, the doctor carefully cut the skin, which stung a little. He then peeled it back and used the tool in his other hand to unlock a cavity. "Fascinating. I didn't notice that last time. Oh, to meet the people who originally built you, that would be some conversation. To be able to pick their brains for data."

"Just promise you won't try to get into my brain," Jaxxon said dryly. His skin was cold from being exposed and the tools weren't exactly kept warm. "I remember one of your predecessors trying something like that and almost frying my head."

"These are the best doctors in the entire city," interrupted the General. "And hopefully they'll be done soon, right men?" He was getting impatient waiting for this to be over with, that was easy to tell. "I need to get Jaxxon out of here immediately."

"What? Oh, of course," said the doctor. He was disappointed that his scientific exploration into the external inputs beneath the cyborg's skin was going to be cut short, but didn't argue. "Well then, you seem to be fully in order." Looking at the General, he added, "He's approved to go on his mission."

Like you have the slightest idea about how I work, any more than I do, thought Jaxxon. But he wasn't in the mood for an argument, and he didn't want to start one.

  -Simone-

Simone woke up in the escape pod. A low vibration was around her, but it was hard to tell if it emanated from the tiny capsule or not. It felt like it was still moving, but there were no windows to see out and know for sure. That stupid display screen was just showing the same thing as before she'd fallen asleep: some planet that looked sort of like Earth, only she was sure it wasn't. There were a bunch of other letters, or maybe they were numbers, or a combination of each. It was impossible to tell with the strange language used.

While having only been put to sleep through the use of anesthetics once, she was familiar with the side-effects. Whatever had put her and her fellow crew member to sleep, there was certainly nothing like it on Earth. They had been in that pod, after getting away from the alien kidnappers.

Her crew member, Bree, began to stir just at that moment. She groaned and then made a desperate whining sound, like a terrified baby. The temptation to wake her up was strong, but Simon just remembered having to hold her and try to calm her down immediately after they'd taken off in the escape pod.

No, Simone wanted to be able to think right now, instead of worrying about playing doctor to someone else. And playing doctor was something she was quite used to. Except in real life, she didn't have to play at it because that's what she did for a living. Since the day she'd been accepted into medical school, she had wanted to go into space. It was her golden ticket; get through all the trials and exams, keep her grades good enough, and she knew there was a chance she might actually get into orbit at least.

Earth didn't have any ships that left the local space around the home world back then. This research and exploration mission aboard The New Horizon was every young scientific mind's dream adventure. At least, that's what it was meant to be. Being kidnapped by gangly aliens with heads like frogs?! That was sure to prove more than enough bad imagery to haunt her nightmares for the rest of her life.

What had happened back there with the aliens boarding them, taking who-knew-how-many of the human crew members, and then hauling them off for captivity, experimentation, unseen horrors… that should have been enough to make Simone shake with fear and anxiety even now. But she had a secret weapon that very few people got. Simone had been implanted with a special device that would help to keep her focused and enhance her natural senses, while encouraging her more beneficial natural instincts to
shine through the usual chaos that every person faced.

She was far from being some kind of super woman, but this gave her a very useful boost for dealing with high pressure medical emergencies, or performing surgery when she had to.

"Of course," she exclaimed, quietly enough so as not to wake up Bree. "That's what woke me up." Her DRDoctor-9000 unit, a special design for medical professionals, must have caused her to wake up when the rumbling of the escape pod had started. She touched her fingers to the place where it was supposedly implanted. There was no visible scarring and it was implanted in a way that made it undetectable on the surface of her skin. It had been a completely painless operation with very little recovery time. Once the initial ache had gone away, Simone couldn't even tell her "little helper," as she liked to think of it, was even there.

But damn it, she could swear that it itched sometimes. The surgeon-technician in charge of the implants had told her that was impossible. But what did he know? He didn't have any implants of his own. Very few human beings did, as they were largely experimental and reserved for military officers or the exceedingly rich.

There was a thud, definitely not coming from outside. Simone grabbed onto the sides of the pod, but there was nothing she could get a grip on.

Bree was still sleeping, peacefully now and unaware of the growing vibrations rocking through her body.
