LOW JOB: A Filthy Dogs MC Romance Novel Page 18

“And one more thing,” Prez added. “The recent war, coupled with the previous one with the Aztekos... they weren’t good for our... standing in the community.”

“Aw shit,” Razor grunted. “Who’s complaining now? The adult swimming club? That new faggot group with an office at Fairmont? The high school’s PTA?”

“Chief Hardy, actually,” Prez answered, referring to the sheriff of the San Mateo PD. “He’s been trying his best to cover for us. But during the war, there were hundreds of Godlesses in town. It got the citizens riled up. Hard to explain their presence here, specially when a lot of their ugly bunch were as rowdy as life-termers on crack.”

“So what do you want us to do, Prez?” I asked.

“Last night will be our last party, at least until the memorial,” he answered. A number of the brothers jeered. “And keep a low profile. Don’t draw unnecessary heat. We don’t need that right now. And, of course, some community work would be nice.”

“Community work?” Bang Bang inquired with bewilderment.

“Yeah,” Prez confirmed. “Y’know, help out the good people of San Mateo whenever they need us. Protect businesses from outsiders. Keep drugs away from the streets. Courtesy visits to the old timers. The usual shit.”

“Yeah, we can do that,” Razor assured him.

We all agreed that we’d be good boys until the heat would die down. We proceeded to enjoy what remained of our coffee before going about the day’s business.

I didn’t know it back then, but what followed was the moment that would completely change my life.

The door opened, which surprised everyone. We weren’t expecting any company.

A girl walked in. Brunette. Short hair. Doe-eyed and nervous. She anxiously surveyed the place before her eyes settled on the table where we were gathered. She swallowed some air, paralyzed where she stood, like a deer caught in the headlights.

  A damn pretty deer.

She wasn’t a stunner. But she was beautiful. She was wearing a hairband with a red ribbon on top, a silk blouse with floral designs, and brown pants that were a tad too short, revealing the skin above her ankles. She wasn’t the type who frequented joints like ours. She was too formal, too innocent, too sacred to be someone who was interested with the club.

  We were devils.

  She was an angel.

  A damn fuckable angel.

“Too early for donuts, sweetheart,” Mammoth informed her, his way of asking her to walk away.

“Are... Are you the... the Filthy Dogs?” she asked with visible uneasiness.

She really was naive. She could’ve seen our kuttes and the colors we wore. The answer was very obvious.

“Depends on who’s asking,” Prez replied. “Why’re you here, darling?”

Her eyes got bigger than they already were. She tried to answer but she ended up mumbling with fright. She cleared her throat and attempted to talk once more.

“M-My... My name is Adeline Jones,” she said. “And I... I... I need your help.”
