“Listen Jarod, you and I both know that you’re beating yourself up, wearing yourself thin because of this. You will need to learn how to deal with this yourself, but we will be there by your side. You’re strong, very strong, and I will say right now, that once you figure out how to stand up to her, and once you do, that life will get so much better for you. just trust me on that. I won’t let her hateful words and the like become a problem any longer. I will stand up to her for your sake, and for the sake of everyone else. We love you a whole lot Jarod, and we both know that this is just the start of our future. This is the last major hole that we will have to cross over, and I’m sure, once we get her squared away, we can live our own lives,” Ryan said to him.

He nodded, listening to the other’s words. He was right, even if he didn’t want to admit it.

“You are right. But I am nervous,” he said.

“Just let us come with you. I’m sure that Ryan can do some sweet talking to her and get that whole mess squared away. Besides, she’s your parent, I doubt that she would be that much of a bitch to you. and if he does say she’s going to take the company away, for whatever bullshit reason, just remember that you’re an adult, and the company is still technically in your name and your name alone, so you can tell them to suck it. And if they’re hateful towards us, oh well, just shows them the type of person that they are to us,” Ryan said.

“Exactly. We can do third,” Carl said to Jarod.

Jarod wanted to believe, he really did, but he was ultimately terrified of the future.

“Thanks you two. I think I’ll be okay. I just got to believe in myself,” he said.

“That’s what really matters you know. Believe in the me that believes in you, and you will be fine,” Carl said.

“Indeed. We’re with you Jarod, no matter what happens next,” Ryan told him.

He sighed, feeling unsure of what to do about it. He felt depressed, stressed out, and the like. He just felt like he was going insane, and that this was definitely making him feel like he was going mad with annoyance. In truth, he just wanted to be honest, and while he knew that honesty was the best solution, he was still scared.

“I’ll do this then. Let’s go see her next Friday,” he said.

They both nodded in agreement, hugging and kissing him once again. Jarod needed to remember that these two are on his side, that things would be all right, and that he would be okay. He just felt nervous as all hell, because in truth, he knew for a fact that this was the beginning of his new life. This would be the first time he ever stood up for himself, and he hoped to god, whomever was up there, that he could do this effectively, and ultimately, to the best result physically possible.

  Chapter Three

About a week had passed, and while it was a bit of a slug, Jarod was able to get his mind off of all the bullshit. He didn’t have to worry as much, or at least he thought so, and soon, the day came. He felt nervous as all hell, feeling like he already wasn’t good enough, and that his parents were going to utterly judge him for his actions.

He dressed nicely, because he knew that his parents would judge him on that and that alone. He got the paperwork ready in case if they did manage to pull some bullshit, and in truth, he felt like he was ready for action. After a moment or so, he then waited in the living room for Ryan and Carl to come over.

When they did, Jarod took a deep breath. He knew that this was the beginning, that he would just need to keep his cool and maintain composure. Of course, that was much easier said than done as they got in the limo. He told the driver to take them to his parent’s home, and that’s what he did.

When they got there, already Ryan could tell that this place wasn’t good. He shivered at the vibes this place gave off.

“Holy fuck this place is foreboding as shit,” he said.

“You’re telling me. This is the type of home that they have, one that doesn’t feel secure, but also one that is welcoming in its own strange way. I never felt that I belonged here, but at the same time, I did come back every now and then. Probably due to sentimentality, but still,” he muttered to them.

“Well, let’s get this over with. The sooner. We correct your mom on her shit, the better we will be,” Carl said.

They went to the door, and Jarod rang the doorbell. His mother answered the door, looking at her son, and then looking at the two other men.

“Who are these two?” she said to him.

“Well hello to you to mother,” he retorted.

“Well I would like to know why you’re associating with these kinds of people,” she said.

He forgot that she was a bigot towards people of color too. This was going to be fun.

“Well, I’ll tell you when I get inside if you could quit being a douche for about five seconds. Would it kill you?” he asked.

“No actually, I just don’t want my stuff stolen,” she said.

Wow. She was just as bigoted back then as she is now. This was going to be annoying.

“Well, let’s get this started,” he said to her.

They at in the living room, his father there as well.

“What have you been up to Jarod?” his father asked.

He smiled. He knew that his father was much more accepting of this, even though he wasn’t totally for gay people. That would be the only problem.

“Well dad, your wife actually asked for me to come over. She’s been trying to police my actions yet again,” he said.

“It’s not policing when it is our business,” she said to him.

“Yes it is policing. You’re acting like you’re in a complete and utter control of this place, like I have no say in the matter, and frankly, it’s starting to piss me off. I’m getting tired of it,” he said.

“So why did you sell your company son? I know that you’re taking a residual income out of it, but it seems so unlike you to do something like that. I mean, you always seemed to enjoy it,” he asked him.

He sighed. He knew that if anything, his father would be understanding of the situation, even if his mother was nothing but a douche to him.

“Well dad, there is a damn good reason for this. The key thing is really just the fact that I’ve been having some realizations lately. I’ve started to realize the true potential of my life, what I’m really made of, and what I need to do for myself. I’ve started to come to terms with the fact that I’ve been unhappy for a very long time,” he said.

  “Really?” his father asked.

“Well the family business doesn’t determine your happiness,” his mother muttered.

“Actually mother, it does. I’ve been dealing with depression for as long as I can remember, and frankly, I’ve been going mad with annoyance and disdain because of it. I hate that I’ve had to struggle with this, but that’s what I’ve suffered from. Depression has many forms, and while you think I’m the perfect sort of son, I definitely know for a fact that this is indeed something that I need to do. I need to do this for my own sanity, my own sake, and for my own future,” he said.

“Are you sure though?” his father asked.

“You’ve already disappointed us with the fact that you’re doing this though. So why go through with it?” his mother said.

He gulped. He knew that it was time. He needed to tell his family the truth, that he was pursuing something new.

“Because mom. Dad. I’ve learned I have a new passion in life. It’s dance,” he said.

They looked at him as if he had three heads, his mother glowering.

“But that doesn’t pay the bill!” she said.

“Actually it does. I’ve been casted in a show, and not only that, since I have it set up that I will be getting residual income from my business, I’m actually able to dance freely without ever having to worry about going into debt,” he said to her with a smile.

She looked livid, and while he knew for a fact that this was something that he would need to figure out later on, especially in terms of his own sanity and life, he felt bette
r just admitting it to himself. His father looked surprise, but when he stared at his son’s face, a smile ghosted over it.

“You know, I want to be mad at you Jarod. I really do. I want to be furious that you sold off your life’s work in order to pursue something like that. I want to be mad that you’re only taking a residual income, but the truth is, I’m not. I really am not mad at you,” he said.

“Are you sure dad?” he asked.

“Course. I’m definitely sure. I’ve been struggling to talk with you about this as well, but I’ve noticed that you haven’t seemed all that interested in your business as of late. You make the trades, but I don’t see the heart you have in it. I figured that something was wrong,” he said.

“Yeah dad. There was. I was unhappy with the treatment I was getting. Unhappy with the fact that I did the same different hit each day, and I felt like I was going insane. But you know, ever since I realized that, I’ve started to feel better about myself, about my own happiness, about the way life is. I’ve started to just feel like I’ve been holding myself back for a long time, and because of this, I’ve decided to make changes. One of them was changing the holder of the company so that I didn’t have to stress over it. There is another change as well, and I’m sure you’ve both figured it out by now,” he said.

His mother looked at the two men with him, sneering.

“I suppose it has to do with these two,” she said.

“Yes mother. It does. I know you’re probably going to hate me for what I’m about to say, probably think about how you can effectively disown me even further, but I’m going to be real with you. I haven’t felt this good in a long time after finally realizing the truth,” he said.

“Which is what?” his dad asked.

He took a deep breath, bracing himself for the impact this will create.

“I’m gay dad. Mom. I do like men. I’ve never been into women, and since I came to terms with the fact that it is indeed possible to have a boyfriend, I’ve found someone who loves me for me,” he said.

They looked at him, and then at the other two.

“And I suppose this is what you’ve found?” is mother asked.

“You treat them like objects you know. They have names. I’m sure you’re going to give me shit for having two lovers as well. I’m honestly ready for that nonsense. I’m ready to take whatever it is that you’re about to say to me. But yes, these two are my loves. You might actually remember them from back in high school. Remember Ryan and Carl? These are who they are,” he said to them.

They looked at him with surprise once again, both of them shocked that he was actually gay. However, his father was the first to speak, looking at him a surprised glance.

“Well son, I never thought I would be hearing this from you. This is interesting,” he said.

“I don’t know if I can accept that. I mean, I thought you would be giving me grandkids, someone to take over the company once you’ve decided to step down. Now you’ve pulled this shit,” she muttered.

“I know you probably hate me now mom, but trust me, I’m happier than I ever was before. I know you can’t accept someone being happy for realizing the type of person that they are, and instead you get off to being a dick to people, but trust me, it’s better this way. I feel happier, lighter than I have before, and in truth, I don’t feel that I need to pretend to be something that I’m not. I hate that I had to do that with you two, and I know that you probably will never want to see me again, which is fine, I won’t hate you for that, but at the same time, I definitely feel like if I don’t have some sort of say in my own happiness, I’ll go mad,” he said to them.

They nodded, both of them sighing in frustration.

“Well son, I mean, if you feel this is the right thing for you to do, then so be it,” he said.

  “But honey—“

“Shut up for a second Nina. You and I both know what’ it’s really like to be forced to marry someone you don’t like. You and I know that feeling all too well,” he said.

What was his dad getting at? Did they have a relationship based on love?

“What do you mean dad?” he asked.

“You know exactly what I mean. What I mean is, I didn’t base our relationship on love, but rather, this was an arranged scheme created by my parents. We did learn to love each other eventually, after a little bit of work, but the truth is, we both have our fair share of feeling the way that you did. Which is why I can’t get mad at you if you don’t follow in my footsteps,” he said.

“Are you sure about that dad? I mean, I know that it’s my decision at the end of the day, but still,” Jarod said.

He felt bad that he even said that, because it was his decision, but his father nodded.

“I’m sure son. Be happy. Don’t be like us. I mean, I’ve thought about divorcing your mother many times, but I haven’t. But seeing how ignorant she’s being towards me, I think that might be the best solution at the end of the day,” he said.

His mother looked at him like he had three heads.

“What did you just say?” she muttered to him.

“I didn’t stutter Nina. I’m getting a divorce. Your intolerance is honestly driving me insane. It’s over, and I’ve been struggling to come to terms with the fact that you’re a bitch for years now. I mean, maybe I need to follow in my son’s footsteps and learn to love someone else, someone who loves me for who you are. I know that you’re the daughter of a grand company, and I’ve tolerated your bullshit for a very long time, but I think, I’m starting to see what my son saw in you, that you’re nothing but a rotten bitch who needs help,” he said.

Before she could say anything else, he left, leaving her alone. She glared at Jarod.

“This is all your fault. Our marriage has been rocky for years now, but he’s going to officially leave me now,” she said.

“It’s not my fault mom. Maybe if you weren’t such a hateful person, this wouldn’t have happened,” Jarod said.

He knew that his parent’s relationship was bittersweet at best, but now, upon seeing the truth, he could tell that their relationship wasn’t based on love, but rather force. He didn’t want to end up like them, which was why, when he saw them fight like that, he knew that he made the correct decision.

He was sure to hear about this soon enough, probably from his father. He presumed that the man would keep in contact with him, but he was sure that his mother buried all of those feelings. He never felt like she loved him anyways, more of a tolerance of him because if she did otherwise, he would probably haven’t heard the end of it. She was controlling, but he could tell from the way his father reacted, he wasn’t too upset. In fact, it might’ve changed him for the better.

He felt bad for smiling in the face of adversity, but that’s how he felt. He was definitely feeling better seeing all of that, and soon, the three of them left the area. In truth, he wanted to console his father, to tell him it gets better from this point forward, but he knew that his dad would come around in due time. He didn’t want to bother him right away, and he knew that his dad was coming to terms with the truth, that his wife was an ignorant bitch. Although he could tell his father didn’t fully like everything that he did, he wasn’t going to be a dick because of something a trivial as sexuality and personal choice. That’s what he learned from it, and when Jarod left, he understood.

It wasn’t about the actions he took, or even the way he composed himself. True happiness was doing what you believe is right, what you believe is fair and just, and doing otherwise is nothing but bad for you, because you’re only hurting yourself at the end of the day. He didn’t want to hold back the feelings he had anymore, and in truth, he felt like he didn’t need to at this point in time. it was the start of a new life, a new him, a new sort of rules and regulations that he got to determine for himself. He doubted he would be back here again, unless of course his dad got this home, but he was sure they would fight everything out in a messy divorce, that’s for sure. But Jarod knew that
his dad was unhappy, and that this unhappiness had boiled over. He didn’t want to think that he was the sole cause of this, but he definitely felt like he was the responsible one here, and his father was definitely starting to see just what he did to himself, to his relationship, and inevitably to his life. It was the beginning of their futures, the futures they both wanted, the ones that they craved, and both of them knew for a fact that there was indeed something here for all three of them, and no matter what happened next, no matter what the odds, at the end of the day, it would all be all right.

  Chapter Five

When they got back to his mansion, both Ryan and Carl were silent. They had a lot to take in, and seeing the way his father and mother acted certainly said a whole lot about things. They definitely knew that there were so many things going on in life that they didn’t know for sure what might happen next, but soon, once the three of them sat down, Jarod took a deep breath.

“Let’s get the fuck out of town. We all need it. I know of a good place,” he said.

  “Where to?” Carl asked.

“Let’s get in the limo. I’ll tell the driver,” he said.

He knew of this great woody cabin just outside of town. He made a sudden reservation, knowing that this was all on a whim. They had the cabin ready, and once the limo dropped them off, the trio went to check in. They were soon led to a cabin with a spacious bed, a nice kitchen, and the whole nine yards. When they all sat down, immediately, Jarod took a deep breath, uncorking the wine bottle from the fridge.

“This is the life,” he said.

  “Yeah. It is,” Ryan replied.

“So what do you think about what happened?” Carl asked.

Immediately, Jarod started to tense up. He could feel the tears welling in his eyes, but he shook his head.

“You want my honest answer?” he asked.

  “Yeah,” Ryan said.

“To be real, I knew that it was coming. My dad would be totally chill with me being gay. It was always my mother that seemed to hate me for whatever I did. I know that she was the one who honestly never supported me, never cared about my choices, never seemed to want to be there for me. I mean, I knew that this was going to come up eventually. I just never expected them to make it that fucking awkward in front of us. It’s like this: I mean, I know that I do love them, but if they can’t make it right for me, if they can’t make things good, then I definitely know that this will only make things harder on all of us. I just want to have a decent life, and I’m sure that things will only get better with time if we do keep ourselves strong and going,” he said.
