Charles turned around for a brief moment, met Simon’s gaze and lifted a single hand to say hello. Simon did the same before heading for his bag and picking out an appropriate outfit to fire guns in which it turned out was a cameo t-shirt and sweat pants.

Once Simon had applied his dry-shampoo to rid himself of tangled locks and brushed his teeth using a hole in the ground as a sink he was ready to go. He hopped on the back of one of the two trucks which didn’t happen to hold Charles and they set off. He was sat with Clark, two more of the unit’s men and a medic as one of the engineers drove onwards.

The truck bumped and quaked as it made its way over large mud piles and swerved around large trees. The journey was silent as everyone on the vehicle seemed to be the ones that had chosen to spend the night drinking. Simon tried several times to make conversation and ask questions for his piece but he was met with grunts or blank, mindless stares like that of a bag-boy at the tail end of a fifteen hour shift.

Twenty minutes later and the truck came to a halt. Everyone jumped off, mumbling to themselves and grunting with aches as they made their way to a large, metal warehouse covered in mud, leaves and twigs. The building was old, the roof had holes in it and light shone from the gaps in all different directions leaving little rays of visible dust floating in the air. About three metres in were sandbags, beyond them were targets ranging from a few metres to the other side of the long building. Simon pulled out his pad and took a seat behind the men as he watched them go through their routine.

“Why don’t you guys practice back at the base?” He asked as he folded his legs into a table for his pad.

“Two reasons,” Charles appeared as he walked into the building last and passed by Simon.

“The first is the noise, we’d be sending a signal of our location out to anyone in the forest,” as Charles continued he went towards a locker behind the sandbags and used a key to open it, pulling out a large sniper.

“The second is safety, whilst we’re all trained marksmen accidents do happen, some of these bullets can pierce stone walls and on the other side of those walls could be medical staff.”

“Okay,” Simon spoke quietly as he jotted down his notes.

“Well,” Charles spoke out to Simon as he stood still glaring at him.

  “Well?”

Charles handed out the gun, holding it in both hands flat on his palms in Simon’s direction.

“I told you before; you have to be a part of this too.”

Simon became extremely uncomfortable looking at the weapon. He began to stutter as he tried to protest but Charles’s heavy sigh gave Simon the impression that he was annoying Charles and that’s the last thing he wanted.

“Okay,” Simon put on his smile, the same smile he used when getting a story he didn’t really want to write, got up and walked over to Charles.

The pair stood at the very end of the large, open room with the wall to their right and the nearest person out of ear-shot. The other men got on with their training as usual as Charles showed Simon how to hold the gun and look through the scope.

“It’s all about breathing,” Charles made his way behind Simon, taking over his body to control Simon’s aim.

“Breathing…” Simon repeated as he found it harder to breathe slowly in the close presence of Charles who had pushed up against his back as he raised his arms.

“Now, finger on the trigger,” Charles said softly into Simon’s ear as he caressed his hand and put it into place, placing his finger on top of Simon’s as it lightly touched the trigger.

“Aim,” Charles’s voice was different this close, there was a gentleness to it Simon hadn’t heard before.

  “Fire.”

Charles pushed down on Simon’s finger and the gun fired, the recoil shocked Simon and pushed him hard against Charles. In that moment he felt a large, pulsating object pressing between his firm cheeks. Charles seemed to be aroused, very aroused and it was obvious to both of them that Simon could feel it.

Simon turned his head, his face bright red as he went to look at Charles who kept a blank expression.

“How did I do?” Simon muttered nervously.

“You’re good,” Charles looked at him, the two’s lips closing in as they forgot where they were and what they were supposed to be doing.

“Hey!” Suddenly Clark cried out and caused the two to fly apart just as fast as the bullet had shot from the gun.

“Yeah?” Charles walked down to Clark to speak with him leaving Simon confused, horny and yearning for more.

  ***

It was Simon’s second month with the unit. They were all assembling in the courtyard to do their daily exercise and training course which Simon had been taking part in for weeks. Charles stood at one end, shouting orders and motivation at everyone as Simon stood in line at the other end. The pair hadn’t spoken for two weeks.

One by one the unit set off onto the course, running up the ramp, jumping over to climb the wall and monkey bars before descending to crawl under the wire. Simon’s body was aching, he had pushed his limits and in the short time he’d been in the forest he was already starting to form muscles in places he’d never thought he’d have them. However a diet of tinned food couldn’t help build his abs to the level Charles or his unit had sculpted them over many years of hard work and dedication but he felt proud of what he’d accomplished in such a short space of time.

Charles looked on from the side lines at the determination on Simon’s face but when Simon turned to meet Charles’s gaze he felt as if the muscular man was looking through him coldly.

Charles turned around; he began to walk off with the men as they finished the course. Simon was angry; infuriated that he was being ignored after what Charles had done with him. He didn’t ask for this, he didn’t force this and whilst he didn’t reject it he still didn’t deserve the treatment he was getting.

Simon leapt from the starting line in a fit of rage, roaring loudly as he ran up the ramp and leaped to the other side. He grabbed hold of the rope dangling from the wall and began to climb it. A part of him felt like he had something to prove to Charles whilst the other part argued he owed Charles nothing.

In his rage Simon misjudged his footwork and rammed his foot into a hole in the wall that it got trapped in. As he struggled to climb up further he began to panic, he yelped in pain as he used all of his meet to pull himself free but in doing so he let go of the rope and tumbled down to the ground hitting the mud head-first. Everything went blurry, everything went white. Simon could only hear a buzzing sound, the sound of white-noise ringing out as he lay still and watched shadows of people hovering around him and muttering indistinguishable dialogue.

Heaviness fell over Simon’s eyes, one he didn’t fight or attempt to evade. He gave himself over to the darkness infecting his sight until finally he drifted into a peaceful slumber.

Everything was silent for a moment, in the space between losing consciousness and waking up Simon experienced a moment of complete, utter silence. He couldn’t think, feel or comprehend what was happening and yet there was an awareness that let him know he was sleeping unwillingly.

His fingers twitched, his toes curled and the sound of muttering rang in his ears.

“How he is?” A voice ran through his ears.

“He should be up at any moment, he’ll need to stay in bed for a few days though for observation but that’s just so his paper don’t get on my ass about it.”

  “Thank you.”

Simon opened his eyes and a green fabric met his gaze.

“Where…” he muttered as he tried to sit up.

“Hey now!” Charles called out and rushed to his side, preventing him from getting up.

“You hit your head, lie back down,” Charles said as he lowered Simon back into the pillow.

“Where am i?” Simon mumbled as if to himself.

  “The medical tent,” Charles replied.

“You fell off the wall from the top and hit your head on the ground,
you’re lucky there was plenty of mud or you could’ve cracked your skull open.”

Suddenly all the memories of Charles’s dismissive behavior came flooding back into Simon’s mind which was already hosting the worst headache he’d ever felt.

“What’s it to you,” he said in a angst-ridden, teenage-tantrum manner as he folded his arms and sat up a little more, turning his head away from Charles.

Charles went silent; he looked at Simon in the bed and felt more relief than he ever had before. He’d spent two days by his side, two days sat in an uncomfortable folding chair and skipping his meals just to be there when Simon finally woke up. He knew what he had done was wrong and now he also knew that he couldn’t deny it any longer.

“It’s everything to me,” he said with a stern voice.

“I’m worried about you, I might not have earned that right but it doesn’t matter. What matters is that you’re okay.”

Whilst Simon had told himself at various points in his life that no matter how nice the guy is after he’s been a jerk there was no way he’d just forgive him, he couldn’t help but break out in a smile as his heart began to beat wildly against his chest.

  “Well…” Simon muttered.

“I didn’t deserve what happened Charles.”

  “I know.”

“And if we’re doing this then I won’t tolerate it again.”

  “I know.”

The two sat in silence until Simon finally let his stubbornness subside and gave into the joy he felt at the sight of Charles’s concern for him.

“Kiss me,” he muttered the words but they were just as clear as any order given in the military.

Charles smiled, leaping from his seat to kiss Simon as he held his face with both hands.

“Ouch,” Simon hissed as the overbearing presence of the muscular man hurt his aching body.

“Sorry,” Charles shot off Simon and looked him up and down to make sure he was okay.

“No, it’s worth it,” Simon smirked before pulling Charles close to him again and kissing him once more.

  ***

“So, you’re rich?” Charles asked as he held Simon’s head on his chest.

“My parents were, I inherited everything but I don’t use any of it. My trust fund keeps their house running, pays for gardeners and maids to clean the dust once a month.”

“I admire that,” Charles rolled over so that they were face-to-face on Simon’s mattress.

Simon had been discharged from the medical tent but only to be confined to his bedroom for two days. He was no longer going to be participating in military training and Charles had volunteered to keep an eye on him for the rest of his stay giving the two of them the perfect excuse to do nothing but talk and spend time together.

“You’re not tempted to quit the paper and go live in their mansion?”

“Perhaps, sometimes, yes,” Simon replied as he rolled onto his back and stared up at the ceiling.

“I never wanted to be a journalist you know,” he stated for the first time out loud.

“What did you want?” Charles asked as he gazed at the younger man, watching his soft, pink lips move as he spoke.

  “An author,” Simon stated.

“Author isn’t a far cry from journalist, is it?” “Well, to be an author requires months, perhaps years of writing creatively. That’s why I’m tempted to just live off my parent’s wealth. So I can pursue that dream…”

“But?” Charles could see a ‘but’ coming after that sentence ended.

“But my parents were always so proud of me for making my own way in life, I’d feel like I was letting them down.”

“I’m sure if they didn’t want you to live comfortably then they wouldn’t have left you all that money and the house.”

  “Maybe…”

“How long ago did they pass?” Charles asked as he reached out and stroked Simon’s golden hair.

“My father was two years ago, my mother soon after. It wasn’t unexpected or anything, they adopted me after failing to have children in their youth. They were in their late-sixties when I was in high school.”

Just as a single tear began to form in Simon’s hazel eyes he shook the emotions off and turned his head to Charles.

“So, what’s your story?” He asked calmly.

“I never did finish that interview.”

Charles sat up against the wall; he scratched his head and looked at Simon who stared at him with a soft smile. He leaned over, reached down and planted a warm, soft kiss on Simon’s lips before resuming his position and folding his arms.

“When I was sixteen my parents walked in on me and a friend… doing stuff.”

  “A male friend?”

“Yeah, jock-type, on the football team with me. Our parents had known each other for years and we’d been doing stuff since we knew what ‘stuff’ was.”

  “What happened?”

“Well, my dad threw a fit, my mother broke down, my sister stopped talking to me and once high school was over they asked me to leave. By that point the guy had turned things around, told the school I’d come onto him and ruined my reputation. With nowhere to go I enrolled for the military hoping that it’d change me.”

Charles looked down at Simon’s eyes again, now full of sympathy and pity.

“Clearly it didn’t work though,” Charles smiled and lifted the sheets to see Simon’s topless body.

Simon smirked; he grabbed the sheets and pulled them closer to him as if Charles seeing him naked was still a big issue.

  “Stop it,” he protested playfully.

“You know I don’t like being told what to do, I give the orders, remember?” Charles said with a smirk as he leaned in for another kiss.

The two hadn’t been intimate yet, not with Simon’s head injury their top concern however he was feeling much better now.

Just as Charles began to crawl on top of Simon there was a banging sound at the door, it tried to open but Charles had strategically placed a chair under the doorknob to prevent it from being moved from the outside.

“Charles, we need you,” a voice called out.

Charles sighed and got off Simon, he threw his shirt on and looked back at the younger man who he wanted nothing man than to taste again.

“I’ll be back soon,” he said with a smile.

  “You better,” Simon responded.

Simon sat there for a while in silence, he was happy, for the first time in ages he was truly happy. He couldn’t think of what it meant when he had to leave the base but he knew he’d never forget the time he’d spent with Charles. Besides, Charles wasn’t always going to be with the military, he’d take breaks and maybe they could meet up again, there would be opportunities, there would be ways to stay in touch – there had to be.

Fifteen minutes passed and then the door slowly began to open. Charles walked in, shoulder’s slumped and head towards the ground. When he looked up at Simon his eyes had lost their usual spark.

“What is it?” Simon immediately knew something was wrong.

  “We’re being deployed,” Charles stated.

“We’re going to the front lines, to a village that needs evacuating in Africa.”

Simon’s heart beat hard against his ribs as his stomach turned. How could this happen? Not now. Not when things were finally getting good.

“When do you leave?” Simon asked as he held his tongue from ranting and screaming protests.

  “Three days.”

The room fell silent and Charles lingered in the doorway. The two didn’t say another word for the rest of the night but embraced one another when Charles finally made his way to bed.

  ***

Simon woke up with a jolt, he looked to his side and made sure Charles was still with him – he was. Charles felt the sudden movement and jumped up too, a reaction from his countless days spent sleeping in rough areas with his life in danger.

“What is it?” Charles asked with worry rushing through his mind.

Simon shook off the nightmare, a horrible image of Charles leaving and never coming back faded slowly as reality set in.

  “Nothing,” Simon muttered.

Charles reached for his watch by the mattress, it was only four in the morning but the countdown had already begun.

“Two days,” he muttered as he threw the watch back to the ground.

As Charles rested his head back on the pillow, staring blankly at the ceiling Simon let a hand travel over Charles’s hairy chest and down to his waistline.

“What you doing?” Charles turned with a smile as he glared at Simon.

“Making the most of things,” Simon responded before letting his hand travel further down, grasping the hardening member that Charles unleashed from his boxers.

Simon got on top of Charles, grinding his firm, plump behind against Charles’s long, black shaft through the fabric of his briefs. He let it slide up and down his crack, its shape was as if it had been crafted for Simon’s body all along, it fit so perfectly between his cheeks that Simon almost felt as if a part of him was missing by not having Charles inside of him already.

Simon leaned down and kissed Charles. He kissed him gently until Charles ran his hands into Simon’s golden locks and made things a little more harsh and passionate for the both of them. Charles rammed his tongue down Simon’s throat as he grinded against his behind, lifting his hips up and running his shaft over Simon’s cheeks.

The younger man’s moans became muffled as they kissed until he managed to pull away and smile down at Charles. Charles tried to sit up but Simon placed his hands on Charles’s chest and kept him down.

“Let me show you what I can do,” Simon said.

Charles’s smile grew bigger as did his black dick. He nodded, placing both hands behind his head as he sank into the mattress and looked up at Simon who gently grinded over him.
