“I am fine. Listen I have to get to work soon, but I wanted to talk to you before I left. Here is your manual. I have a big house and a boat house. The pool guy is coming by today so you have to let him in about 12. Also, my mother is bringing by somethings for Macy and she wanted to meet you.” I nodded and he continued. “Everything you need to know is in that manual and my phone number and Marline’s number in on the first page. I have faith in you that you won’t need it but if you do its right here. Macy gets out of school at 1:50. Its best to be in line about 1:30 and you won’t be waiting forever. The schools information is on page two and everything you are going to be doing with her until my wife gets home. My wife picks up a bit everyday so there shouldn’t be much to do. Do you understand so far?” Chandler asked keeping eye contact with me the whole time.

  “Yes sir.” I said.

“Please call me Chandler. When Marline gets home she will evaluate and relieve you. We will call you after we talk when I get home. I must be going; I have patients to tend to. I hope today goes well. I’d like to keep you on for good.” Chandler said and shakes my hand. He leaves and I stand in the foyer with my manual.

I sit in the kitchen at the breakfast bar and open up to page one. There were contacts, emergency, Chandlers and Marlines number and at the bottom there were his mother’s and her mother’s names and numbers. I turn the page to Macy’s school page. I am to pick her up around 1:45 and bring her home. I have to get her a snack and help her with her homework. Easy enough. Then I sit her in front of the TV. for an hour and then by then Marline should be home.

Page three was all about the bedrooms and how to clean then. I was to put new sheets on the bed every day and wash them every two days. Page for was about the bathrooms. There were 4 rooms and every room had a bathroom. Fancy. Page five was the foyer. There wasn’t much to do in there just sweeping and dusting. Page six was the office. I was not to touch anything on the desk, but I did need to dust things around it. Also it was specifically in bold not to open any of the drawers. I was to make sure the books are where they should be in order and dusted.

The rest of the pages just told me how to clean the rest of the room and the last page was where I had to sign. An agreement stating that if something happens it is on me and I cannot talk about what is in my house with anyone outside of the house. Fair enough. I sign and start cleaning the house. They had an iPod home and I slip my IPod onto it. My cleaning playlist comes on. It was a mix of Beyoncé and Ellie Golding and Sam Smith and Ed Sheeran and a few other big name artists.

I start in the living room and I just couldn’t help it I love to clean and the music was good. I was alone and I didn’t care so I started dancing and singing while cleaning. I am in the lower bedroom and I hear a knock on the door. I think it might be the pool boy so I don’t even turn down the music. I just go open the door and it is Chandler’s mother!

“Oh, Mrs. Stewart! I’m so sorry let me turn this music down.” I say as I’m running towards the IPod to shut it off. “Please come in. Chandler said you would come by.” I add. I’m a mess. My hair is up in a bun and I’m sweating.

“You must be Joan.” She looks me up and down and pierces her lips. I’m in an approved uniform and the only thing that is different than when I arrived was my hair was up now. What was she looking at?

“Yes ma ’me. I am.” I smile at her and she just continues to look down her nose at me.

“Ok, I brought these for my granddaughter. See to it that she gets these please? I have to go. Thank you.” She said and sits down a box of clothes and a teddy bear and leaves. Wow, she’s snobby. I’m glad her son isn’t like that or I probably wouldn’t have gotten the job. Well, I don’t have the job yet but I have a good feeling that I do. I look at the clock and it says 11:50 so the pool boy should be here soon.

I need a break so I step outside and light up one of my Marlboro’s and sit on the stoop. This is a pretty good job. I checked out the pool house and it looked like it hadn’t been touched in a while so I just dusted a bit and locked it back up. I see a yellow mustang start to pull up in the driveway and I’m about done with my smoke. I stand up and put it out and he stops next to my Mazda. My Mazda looks like a piece of crap next to his brand new Mustang. These people must pay him well.

“Oh hey. You must be Joan. I’m Juan.” This man was tall dark and handsome. He had long brown hair pulled back in a pony, caramel skin and under his tank I could tell he had a six pack.

“Uh, yes. Hi.” I said. “I was told I had to let you in.” I added and turn quickly and he followed me in. He went straight to the pool area. I went up to the second bedroom and started to vacuum.

When I got to the window I looked out and he had his shirt off and he was sweating. He was using a tool to get the leaves out of the water. Damn he was sexy. No Joan you are here to work not stare at the sexy pool boy. I got back to work making the beds and fluffing the pillows to get my mind off of the beautiful Latin man outside. I finished fluffing the last pillow and I went to clean the bathroom. This was the spare bedroom so I didn’t have much to do in here. I just grabbed the trash out of the can and headed downstairs to put it in the bigger can.

“Alright Joan. I’m done. Please tell Mr. and Mrs. Stewart that I did stop by and if they need me for anything to call.

“Ok I will. Thank you Juan.” I said. He had his shirt back on.

“Ok, have a wonderful day Miss Joan. Goodbye.” He said and left. I watched as his Mustang pulled out of the driveway. I looked at the clock and it was 1:15. I put my broom down and got in my car and drove to the school. I was the second one in line and I made it there by 1:30. I took out my phone and checked Facebook real quick. Nothing real important so I just responded to a few messages and Macy walked out of the building with her class.

I got out and told her teacher who I was and grabbed Macy’s hand. I took her to the convenience store and told her to pick whatever she wanted and she picked Gatorade and lays potato chips. When I was her age I wanted Doritos and Mt. Dew. This kid was healthy. Her parents are doing something right.

I pull up into the driveway of her home and put the car into park. She runs in and I find her already at the table with her homework out. This was a good kid. I sit next to her and open a bottle of water. She never once the whole time asks me for help. She was smart too? Her parents are for sure doing something right.

  “Miss Joan?” Macy asked.

  “Yes sweetie?” I ask.

“Instead of watching TV when we are done can you play with me in my room? Mommy and daddy are always working so they don’t play with me much.” Macy says.

“Oh, ok course. What do you want do? I ask.

“I want to play a game.” Macy said. She finishes her math homework and puts her papers in her book bag. “Ok ready?” Her squeaky voice adds. I follow her up to her room.

  “Ok what game?” I ask.

“This.” Macy brings candy land out of her closet and sits on the floor. I was all done with my work so I didn’t see anything wrong with playing one game with her.

It wasn’t just one game it was like seven games and until her mom walked in the door. I heard her call my name and I walk out the room. Macy follows me and holds my hand. Marline was standing in the foyer and smiling up at us.

“She has taken to you very quick. It usually takes anyone about a week or so.” Marline laughed. “Hey baby how was school? Did you have a snack?” Marline asked squatting to give her a hug.

“Yes! Miss Joan bought me a Gatorade and some lays potato chips. They were good. Thank you Miss Joan.” Macy says.

“No problem Macy. Anything for a smart well behaved girl like yourself.” I said.

“Thank you for that. But, you didn’t have to buy anything for her we have food here.” Marline said.

  “Really I didn’t mind.” I smiled.

“Ok so how was your day. Did my mother in law stop by? Was she nice?” Marline asked. Do I tell her the truth? I don’t want to sound like I’m ta
lking bad about Chandler’s mother.

“She was well quick and to the point. Macy already looked at her stuff and we put her clothes away.” I said. I figured if I say it that way it might sound a whole lot better.

“You can be honest, she can be a bit snobby but we don’t tell my husband that.” Marline laughed. I laughed knowing she was right. “Ok let’s walk through the house and see how you did.” Marline added.

I took her for a tour of her own house and every room she was impressed. When we went back to the foyer she handed me a hundred dollar bill. I was wondering why she was paying me this. Didn’t I get the job?

“Ok, I can see that you are confused. Well, like we said yesterday we are unorthodox so that is for today. We said you’d get $600 a week. But, I’m giving you this just in case my husband chooses not to hire you and you still get paid for what you did. But, I would really not worry about that. I like you, Macy likes you and I’m sure you did a wonderful job. From what I did see you did. So when Chandler gets home I will call you and let you know when you can come next.” Marline said.

“Ok, I’ll be waiting on your call. Thank you.” I said. She shook my hand and I left. I’m really hoping she calls me because when she tells me my schedule I’m calling my job and telling them I’m quitting. That is a beautiful house and their kid is one of the most well behaved children I have ever been around. If I could clean that house everyday I’d be happy. I wouldn’t be so stressed.

Around 8 o’clock that night my cell phone rings but I’m in the shower. I quickly wash out my hair and get out. Wrapping the towel around me I run into my room and check my phone. It was Marline. Crap. I dial her number and she answers.

  “Hello?” Marline sounds annoyed.

“Mrs. Stewart I am so sorry I was in the shower.” I apologize.

“Oh it’s fine.” Her annoyance was gone. “So I talked it over with Chandler and yes he wants to hire you on.” I sigh in relief. “Can you come in Monday through Friday? You already worked today so tomorrow is Tuesday. We wanted to try you out on a Monday so you can start the week.” Marline said.

“Oh, yes that is fine.” I said.

“Ok, but there is a change. You will work from 11 am to 9 pm. We would like for you to make dinner and start eating dinner with us. Macy really likes you so that’s a plus. Also I’m working on a highly important case right now so I’m going to have to start staying at the office a bit longer now. Chandler gets off at 7:30 so I need for you to make sure that he and my daughter eats. Is that ok? Can you cook?” Marline asked.

  “Yes I can.” I said.

“Oh and call me Marline. See you tomorrow. Goodnight.” She hangs up and my heart is pounding. This is the change that I wanted and needed. Thank you God for this new job. I immediately call my manager and tell them that I’m not coming in anymore that I got a better offer and I was very sorry that it was short notice. I went to bed that night with the biggest smile on my face.

  Chapter Three

Waking up at 8:00 am I spring out of bed. It is the second day I work for the Stewarts. I can’t believe they gave me the job. I was concerned about his mother and the way she treated me yesterday, but obviously it wasn’t a big deal because Marline knows how she is. Was she racist? I have never dealt with that before.

Arriving at work there is a key under the mat because Chandler was already at the hospital and Marline had taken Macy to school and went to the office. I was to enter the home alone and start my work. There was a note on the kitchen table and grabbing a glass of orange juice and sat down.

  Joan,

When you arrive every day we will already be at work and Macy will already be at school. Your manual changes weekly, but right now it is the same as yesterday. We are having a guest come in at the end of the week so we need you to go pick up some groceries and stock the pool house. Also, we have a list of what we would like for the main house. Instead of leaving when Marline gets home, for the next few weeks you will make dinner and eat with us and leave after Macy is in bed. Marline has an important case and she has to be concentrated on every aspect of this case. Eat whatever you’d like for lunches and don’t bother buying Macy anything for a snack we have plenty here for her. We have no problem with you doing it, we highly appreciated it very much, but save your money. Do your job well Joan. We hired you because we trusted you. Have a great day.

  Marline & Chandler Stewart

Ok, well that was pretty self-explanatory. I pick up the manual and I start my day. This time I go backwards, starting upstairs and making my way down. About eleven I grab my keys and the money and head to the store. Who are they having at the end of the week? I have a long list for the main house and a shorter list for the pool house. I get the pool house groceries first.

I have a cart full of vegetables and pasta’s. They wanted me to make hamburgers for dinner so I picked up a head of lettuce and tomatoes. Paying for everything and walking out to the car I had forgotten hamburger buns so I put everything in the trunk and run back in. When I walk in I run right into Juan the pool boy from yesterday. He had his shirt on today so that was less distracting.

“Hello Joan.” Juan smiled at me with his flawless white teeth.

  “Hello Juan.” I smile back.

“How are you today? Pool still clean?” Juan asked.

“Looks perfect Juan.” I smile at him a little too big.

  “Great.” Juan said.

“I have to get hamburger buns for dinner tonight. See you later?” I try to walk away but he stops me.

“Wait. I wanted to ask you something? You like hamburgers? I wanted to see if you wanted to go to a diner my grandmother owns. She makes the best ranch burgers anywhere.” Juan asked. He’s asking me out on a date.

  “Uh, sure.” I smile.

“Can I get your number? I’ll call you later, see when you are free.” Juan pulls out his phone.

“Sure. 555-2568.” I say my phone number and he puts it in his phone.

“Great I’ll call you later. What time do you get off?” Juan asked.

“9.” I say. “But, I really must go. Call me later, ok?” I said and walked towards the bread. Is it ok to go out with your boss’ pool boy? I don’t have much luck in relationships and I firmly believe you never mix work with pleasure. It always turns out bad.

Driving back to the Stewarts house I turn on the radio and a slow song comes on, something Christina Aguilera I think. I pull into the driveway and park. I have so much to carry in this might take a while. I look at the clock and I have to pick up Macy in an hour so I hurry.

I put everything up and cross it off on my list for the day and go to the school to pick up Macy. Macy’s teacher brings her out to the car and leans down after closing the door for Macy. She hands me a letter and I open it. Should I have done that? I’m not her mother.

“What is this Mrs. Jones?” I ask.

“Macy’s mother called earlier this week, and told me that you would be picking her up for now on. I need you and her to sign this paper so we can have legal proof.” Mrs. Jones said.

“Oh, Ok. Of course. I’ll have her sign it as soon as she gets home.” I said and smiled at her.

“Thank you Joan. See you tomorrow Macy.” Mrs. Jones tapped the car door and I drove off.

“How was your day Macy?” I said. I wanted to get to know her because we are going to spend almost every day with each other.

“It was good. Joan?” Macy asked.

“Yes?” I said. I turn down the radio.

“I want you to be my nanny forever. I had a lot of fun yesterday. Not a lot of people that my parents hire play with me. They just send me up to my room alone.” Macy said.

“I plan on sticking around for a while sweetie. I would never just send you to your room alone.” I said. I pull into the driveway and Macy runs in and gets right on her homework. Such a good kid. I smile to myself.

“Macy would you like a snack? I cut up some celery and put some cream cheese in them for you.” I say
as I grab the plate out of the fridge and set if beside her.

“Thank you.” Macy said as she picks one up and takes a bite. Good manners too.

“What are you working on?” I ask.

“Math.” Macy said as she answers a question correctly.

I leave her to finish her homework. I take out some hamburger meat and go to put away the laundry that I put in the dryer before I left to get Macy. I hear the TV downstairs and walk down. She was watching a Disney movie so I sat down for a moment to get off my feet. It was Cinderella or something like that I don’t know. I’m not really paying attention. I was thinking about Juan. I want to go on a date with him but I don’t know the rules about going out with someone I basically work with.

“Joan?” Macy brought me out of my reverie.

  “Yes?” I ask.

“When is my momma coming home?” She asks.

“Around five or six I think.” I look at the clock and it’s almost 6 now. “Are you hungry?” I ask.

“Yes.” Macy says not looking away from the movie.

“I’ll make dinner. I’ll call you in when it’s ready, ok?” I get up and go into the kitchen.

I pull out a frying pan and two pots. I roll the hamburger around in my hand and put it in a bowl. I also add seasoning and a ranch packet. Juan says that his grandmother makes the best ranch burgers; well he just hasn’t had mine yet. I laugh to myself and make a patty. The oil is sizzling so I put four patties in to cook. Covering it I turn the heat down a bit. I have to find something to go with it. I pull out a box of mac and cheese from the cupboard and a can of corn.

Finishing up dinner I call Macy in and she sits down and I get out the buns and lettuce and tomatoes. I put some corn in a bowl and mac and cheese on the plate with the burger. She starts to eat and Marline walks through the door. I get her hamburger ready and she sits down.

“Would you like something to drink?” I ask.

“Yes, some sweet tea. Then I would like you to make another hamburger and join us.” Marline takes off her jacket and sips the tea I just sat down.
